In the first week of the regular season, 49ers free safety Madieu Williams was called for an unnecessary-roughness penalty that -- upon NFL review -- was deemed legal.

Williams was not fined but, obviously, the 15-yard penalty remained on the record.

On Sunday, the 49ers were victimized by another poor call -- and this one was a game-changer.

With two minutes remaining in the second quarter and the 49ers leading the Cowboys 14-0, the 49ers' defense held on a third-and-9 situation when Tony Romo's pass fell incomplete.

But the Cowboys received a second life when Ahmad Brooks was ruled to have lined up in the neutral zone. Now, facing a third-and-4 from the Dallas 47, Romo hit Miles Austin on a 53-yard touchdown to cut the 49ers’ lead to 14-7 at halftime.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was asked Thursday whether Brooks was, indeed, offside on the play. His answer was succinct and required no follow-up.

"No," Fangio concluded.

Vernon Davis clears the air with head coach

Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reports that 49ers tight end Vernon Davis met with head coach Jim Harbaugh this week to clear the air about his role on the team.

Davis caught only tywo passes Sunday for 18 yards and vented to his coach about being used primarily as a blocker and a decoy in last Sunday's overtime loss to the Cowboys. "I had on my mind some things I felt we could've done better," Davis said Wednesday. "And I pointed them out to him, as far as getting everybody involved -- I mean, everybody, all the playmakers that we have.

As Davis is probably the most talented playmaker on the team, using him as a blocker makes no sense. Davis is likely to be more involved in the passing game this week as wide receiver Braylon Edwards had knee surgery and will be out at least three weeks.

Eye on officiating: The most scrutinized man in the NFL on Sunday will be referee Alberto Riveron, whose crew is assigned to officiate the game. Eagles quarterback Michael Vick complained after last week's game against the New York Giants that officials are more lenient on defenders who make potential rule-breaking hits on him. Also, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said his club has asked for clarification from the league office on some hits Alex Smith sustained that the club believes should've been flagged for roughing the passer. Both Vick and Smith sustained concussions two weeks ago. So look for Riveron to call a tight game when it comes to hits on the quarterback.

exactly what i said during the game

Takeo going to SD has been a blessing for this team. Navorro Bowman is coming into his own and turning into a BEAST. Dude was projected as a steal and now we see why. And Aldon Smith was in Vick's face the entire game. Our lbs are fucking sick. Carlos Rogers has been a great pick up too. Sooo many positives.

Before this season I always felt crabtree wanted out of SF, but this season has been different. Seems like he is really getting used to being a 49er. Glad because he's a straight up baller. Lucky we swooped up on him. Thank you Oakland.

KingCrab15 Michael Crabtree Great win! Great finish... U know I love my team!! 49ers#
