I have a B.A. in Journalism/Mass Comm from Humboldt State University... they say get a degree in something you enjoy and the money and opportunity will follow. Well, I call BULLSHIT! I've been out of school for damn near 4 years and still haven't landed a journalism job. I make peanuts at my current job and I owe a shitload of cheese to school loans and credit cards I used to get through college. And since this bachelor's I have is pretty much equivalent to a high school diploma these days, I want to go get a Master's degree, but because of previous school debt I can't afford it and still live with moms at the tender young age of 28.

The lesson here: FUCK COLLEGE...FUCK DEBT...GO WORK, EARN, AND STACK.
Well, I'm gonna be in the same position as you in about a year. But I'm hopefully gonna continue in school and get my masters right away. It costs too damn much and I get no help from the government, but the last thing I want is to quit with just a BA and not have shit for a job...

Getting a degree in Civil Engineering Technology

Just copped a City/Government position here in KC....as an Engineering Technician II.
Great Pay, Great benefits, paid holidays and time off...
Paying for me to finish school.....etc..(will most likely get my engineering degree now)

Pimp job.

What exactly is Civil Engineering Technology? Just curious I am a Senior in the Civil Engineering program at Berkeley right now and my focus is in Structural Engineering. The one thing that really sucks about being in such a competitive program is that my GPA is about a 2.5 but when I was at the JC I had a 3.6 so I can kiss grad school goodbye because you need a 3.0 just to apply.

College vs. no college
Seventy percent of jobs don't require a college degree, but even attending college and not graduating can boost earnings by 25 percent, said Peter McNamee, the commission's assistant director for policy. Californians with a bachelor's degree earned $56,296 on average last year compared to those with just a high school diploma, who earned $27,024 on average, according to the commission.

More and more jobs are requiring college degrees or at least two years of higher education, McNamee said. But there are a growing number of jobs in the health and elder care fields for those who don't attend college, he said.

The need for college-educated employees is rising while the number of college-educated residents is declining, according to the commission. Forty-one percent of 45- to 64-year-olds hold college degrees compared to 36 percent of 25- to 34-year-olds in the state.

Going forward, Silicon Valley will need a highly skilled work force to remain competitive, said Russell Hancock, president and CEO of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network, which analyzes trends in the region.

"Companies are going to get the best people and don't care where they find them," Hancock said. "There is going to be a growing divide and (number of) people who are left behind."

Enserio.....That is tight. There is another Mexican on this site that knows Math! PIMPTACULOUS!

What Math did you go up to? When I get my full Engineering degree, I was thinking of doing a Minor or another BS in Math. I like teaching Math. I have done Algebra, Trig, and some calculus, not much though. I am also taking an Applied Statics class right now. It is pretty tight. Talk about 2 page problems!
It shouldn't be that many more classes to get a minor in Math for an Engineering major. Most Engineering majors that change will change to Math because a lot of the classes work for both, I know I did.

I started as a Civil Engineering major, but became disinterested in the field, so math was the switch. The highest math I've taken was Calc III, where you have to go back and prove Calc I and II - also Number Theory, which deals with code-cracking and fun stuff like that.

Civil engineering technicians use theory and practical application in planning, designing, constructing, inspecting and maintaining civil engineering projects. Job duties can include performing land surveys, creating civil engineering drawings using computer aided drafting, assisting engineers with design, and project management.

JCCC's civil engineering technology program offers a broad base of instruction in mathematics, engineering design, drawing interpretation, computer-aided drafting, construction methods and communication skills. The program will qualify graduates for a variety of entry-level positions in design firms, construction companies or public agencies. Successful completion of 64 hours from the civil engineering technology curriculum will lead to an associate of applied science degree.

Here is my course work. I have 31 horus completed and am currently taking 12 hours.

I am currently at a Structural Company now. I designed (Yes, designed) Multifamily residences for a big developer in KC. I have done several different communities. 1 community had 44 3-plexes. Another had 52 buildings, with 4-5-6 plex's. It is really fun.

I want to persue an engineering degree, but I will have to finish this for now.

I like applying mathematics to things so I can see myself like the engineering classes. I want to take Engineering phsyics, but I need Calc 1 to do that. I think I can handle Calc 1. I hear Calc II is the toughest of the 3. But then around here you have to take Linear Algebra.........

Sounds nice I tried to get internships with some Heavy Civil Firms in Oakland but they wanted someone who has taken design courses which comes in your senior year so I guess they wanted a Grad student. But I ended up doing some project management work over the summer and realized that I really liked that too.

Don't worry about the math so much if you have a good teacher you can always get the help. Calc 1 is not bad at all but Calc 2 is a lot of work. Multivariable Calculus was really interesting but not extremely useful. Linear Algebra is just different and confusing but has some good applications and Differential Equations was a good class.

If you decide to do the math it is worth it the just make sure that you get help when you struggle, study groups are always a good idea but people are always willing to help as long as you ask.

Didn't you get a ton of finaid for your undergrad? And the gov'ment gives no help for your masters? You should look into internships in a good company that'll help pay for your tuition; and when you graduate they hopefully will give you a permanent position. Hit up career services.

No financial aid at all for my undergrad, I've been taking out loans to pay for the last year, and the first two years of school I had a scholarship. I've definitely been looking into internships and I'm gonna start applying for different positions soon. Thanks for the advice though...

Not even the cal grant? Anyway, not many people check out career services, they can connect you with big name companies and help with interviews and what not. Good luck with your endeavors.
