This remake was pretty damn good imo, and now to some more important news:

Now that the Sam Raimi-produced remake of his The Evil Dead was an R-rated hit, what comes next? The sequel, presumably, and then maybe that long-gestured fourth Evil Dead, tentatively titled Army of Darkness 2.

But what happens when Raimi has laser focus? Remember when he wanted to make Drag Me To Hell? A preposterous movie pitch that somehow got made – and it was awesome. Now, we’re hearing that Raimi is “determined” to get Army of Darkness 2 off the ground… and maybe even before that Evil Dead sequel.

Tonight Universal Studios Hollywood and Orland celebrate the opening of their annual Halloween Horror Nights. While we have stringers at both events, Evan Dickson is standing on the red carpet hoping to land some juicy horror nuggets. This one is a whopper.

Before we get to the scoop, Bruce Campbell, who starred as Ash in Army of Darkness and produced the remake, says they still have to figure out what direction to go: “We have to figure out what we want to do,” he said, “because this wasn’t a huge long term 18 movie plan, you know what I mean? These sequels – remakes, sequels, whatever you want to call them – come out of nowhere.”

As for what actually comes next, here’s the skinny – Fede Alvarez, who directed the remake, seems to imply that Raimi is more focused on Army of Darkness 2 than Evil Dead 2. In fact, Raimi is already writing it! “The pressure is on them now. Because as far as I know, and heard, Sam is really determined to get Army Of Darkness 2 happening,” he revealed exclusively to Bloody. “He is actually writing [it now].”

This should be huge news for fans of the original trilogy as the implication is that Army of Darkness 2 may actually come next. Maybe we’re reading way into it, but that’s definitely how it sounded to me…

New one was no where near as good as the originals. Bruce Campbell back as ash in Darkness two? I'm in.
The new one was better than the original. The original remake, the one that was hilarious, was better.

I dont think people realize that - Evil Dead has been remade three times now.

The first was an attempt at a serious horror film. It wasn't funny, except for a couple of unintentionally funny scenes because it was so low budget.

The second remake was intentionally funny with Ash and his hilarious one liners and facial expressions.

The third remake, the most recent, was a remake of the original and they nailed it as a serious horror film.

So many big name directors started with Horror and then changed to other genres. But now looking at the box office numbers, Horror gets the same if not more than other genres. Would be nice to see a good horror flick from Peter Jackson, Del Toro, Raimi, Cronenberg, etc.

When it comes to Sam Raimi, it wouldn’t have surprised me at all if he let a new up-and-comer get behind the camera for Army of Darkness 2. And while we’ve never doubted that he was going to direct the follow-up to his 1992 Evil Dead sequel, it’s nice to see some solid confirmation in writing.

Fede Alvarez, who directed this year’s Evil Dead remake, was asked on Twitter if he would be directing Army of Darkness 2. Alvarez, who is currently writing Evil Dead 2 with Rodo Sayagues, responded with confirmation that Raimi will be taking the helm! You can see the tweet below…

Just last week Bruce Campbell confirmed his involvement, which really makes it sound as if momentum is picking up.

The question that remains is as to which will come first, Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness 2 – and might we see the two franchises eventually collide?!
