Former Raider Anthony Wayne Smith charged with three murders

Former Oakland Raiders defensive end Anthony Wayne Smith, who is already awaiting a retrial on a murder charge resulting from a 2008 incident, has been charged with three other murders in Los Angeles County.

The City News Service reported (via the Long Beach (Calif.) Press-Telegram) on Tuesday that Smith had been charged citing a court document.

According to the newspaper, the criminal complaint accuses Smith of being responsible for the killings of Kevin and Ricky Nettles on Nov. 10, 1999 and the killing of Dennis Henderson on June 25, 2001. The criminal complaint also alleges that the victims were tortured, according to the newspaper. Smith could face the death penalty if convicted.

"This came as quite a surprise," defense attorney Michael S. Evans, who represented Smith in his first trial, told the newspaper.

Smith is also accused of kidnapping Nettles and Henderson to commit a robbery.

Smith was the top draft pick of the Los Angeles Raiders in 1990 and played with the team in L.A. and Oakland between 1991 and 1997.

Raider Nation Celebration all lined up

By Steve Corkran
Thursday, July 12th, 2012 at 12:40 am in Oakland Raiders.

Those who wish to get their first look at the 2012 Raiders in a game have to wait until Aug. 13, when the Raiders kick off their exhibition season with a home game against the Dallas Cowboys.
However, the Raiders will provide a sneak peek at the 2012 Raiders on Aug. 12 at the Oakland Coliseum as part of Raider Nation Celebration day.
The event runs from 1 p.m.-4 in Parking Lot B on the south side of the Coliseum complex. Here is the press release issued by the Raiders:

The Oakland Raiders will celebrate the start of football this year with the Raider Nation Celebration on Sunday, August 12 from 1 – 4 p.m. at O.co Coliseum, in parking lot “B,” which is located on the south side of the Coliseum Complex.

This family-friendly event is free and open to the general public and takes place one day before the Oakland Raiders kick off the 2012 campaign in the national spotlight, hosting the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night, August 13.

The Raiders have hosted variations of this fan rally since 1998 at a number of locations throughout Oakland, including Jack London Square, Frank Ogawa Plaza and the Coliseum.

The Raider Nation Celebration will be highlighted by the introduction of first-year coach Dennis Allen and the 2012 Raiders and Raiderettes.

The event will also feature an interactive Kid’s Zone as well as autograph opportunities with Raider Legends and Raiderettes.

A number of exclusive opportunities – locker room tours for season ticket holders and a food tasting for suite holders – will also be part of this year’s Raider Nation Celebration.

Those attending the Raider Nation Celebration will be able to shop at special on site Raider Image, the team’s official store, and food and alcohol-free beverage concessions stands will be available to fans.

There will also be the opportunity for fans to select tickets for Raider games in what stacks up to be a challenging, exciting 2012 schedule. The Raiders also open the 2012 regular season in prime time, hosting AFC West rival San Diego Chargers on Monday night, September 10, in the second half of the ESPN double-header.

Report: Raiders sign SS Branch long-term

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, July 14th, 2012 at 9:06 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders and strong safety Tyvon Branch reached agreement on a four-year contract Saturday, according to a CBS Sports report.
Neither the Raiders nor Branch’s side are commenting on the situation. In recent weeks, Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie acknowledged that both sides were talking about the prospect of hammering out a multi-year contract.
Branch signed his one-year tender as the team’s franchise tag player. That guaranteed him $6.2 million for 2012.
A long-term contract would supersede the one-year tag deal and give the Raiders the ability to free up some salary cap room, which could come in handy if there’s a need to add players between now and the start of the regular season.

Last year that shit was like 4 blocks from my job, I was gonna walk over there after work, but some shit came up

and glad we signed Branch long term. Now we should have some extra money to work with

Oakland Raiders safety Tyvon Branch has agreed to a four-year deal with the team, NFL Network's Michael Lombardi reported Saturday.

Branch had already inked his $6.212 million franchise tender, but the sides were interested in an extension to help lower the safety's cap number for the 2012 season.

NFL.com's Steve Wyche reports the deal at $26.6 million with $17.1 million guaranteed over four seasons.

Branch has been one of the few bright spots in Oakland's secondary, recording 100-plus total tackles in each of the past three seasons. He's valued for his play against the run, and ProFootballFocus.com rated Branch as one of the better safeties when facing the league's premier tight ends.

Covering the New England Patriots' Rob Gronkowski in Week 4 last season, Branch held the beast to one catch for 15 yards on four targets. We point this out because Branch did the same against Antonio Gates, shutting out the San Diego Chargers tight end one-on-one, according to PFF.

Defenses are going nowhere if they can't stop these new-age, monster tight ends. Branch isn't a premier safety, but he's an important piece of the puzzle in Oakland.

Raiders trade Louis Murphy to Panthers for draft pick

Louis Murphy doesn't have to worry about being cut by the Oakland Raiders after all. He has found a team with a much greater need at wide receiver.

Louis Murphy was traded from the Oakland Raiders to the Carolina Panthers on Monday. (David Stluka/Associated Press)

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reported Monday that Murphy is headed to the Carolina Panthers via trade, and NFL Network's Michael Lombardi later confirmed. The Raiders received a conditional late-round draft pick for Murphy, a source with knowledge of the situation told Lomardi.

The Raiders confirmed the trade later Monday afternoon.

It makes sense that the Raiders would get what they could for Murphy. They have Denarius Moore, Jacoby Ford, Darrius Heyward-Bey and great depth at the position.

It also makes sense that the Panthers would add a young, productive player. Murphy led the Raiders' receiving corps with 41 catches and 609 yards as a 23-year-old in 2010. He can be inconsistent, but he has shown big-play ability since entering the NFL. Carolina's wideout group is wide open after Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell.

Acquiring Murphy is a sign that Carolina might not be sure what it has with reserves David Gettis, Seyi Ajirotutu and rookie Joe Adams. Former third-round draft pick Armanti Edwards seems as good as gone from the roster.

Cam Newton needs more weapons around him in the passing game. Murphy is worth taking a flier on

sucks to see him go i think he will turn out to be a good wr once he gets a consistent qb throwing his way. best of luck to him.

Yeah thats a good trade for both parties. I hope cam dont use murphy against us this year though lol. Good to see a move in all this down time, its great we got something for him before circumstances came to just cutting the kid. He could be a deep threat, we seen that when campbell was throwing to him, but moore and ford both gas on him

Yeah, Murphy was good his rookie year, but we have enough young talent at WR, we didn't need him. Honestly, there's a possibility he may not have even made the team, so good we got something for him

Of all the teams that could be tempted to take advantage of the NFL’s new blackout rule, the Raiders are the team that could be facing the toughest decision.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the Raiders have yet to make a decision. Per a league source, the Raiders are still considering and evaluating the situation.

They have until August 9 to pick a percentage of non-premium seats between 85 and 100 that will apply for the entire season. Last year, the Raiders managed to sell out all home games, for the first time since returning to Oakland in 1995.

With a schedule that features visits from the Steelers and Saints at one extreme and the Jags, Bucs, and Browns at the other, it could be hard to duplicate that success, unless the Raiders contend for a playoff berth. Still, taking advantage of a rule that essentially constitutes an advance admission of failure doesn’t fit with the vibe that the organization currently is trying to generate.

Thus, we’d be surprised if the Raiders do anything other than keep the minimum percentage of non-premium ticket sales at 100.
