Stephon Marbury defends Michael Vick, calls dogfighting a sport

NEW YORK (AP) - New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury defended Michael Vick, calling dogfighting a sport and comparing it to hunting.

Marbury spoke Monday about the federal dogfighting conspiracy charges against Vick while promoting his basketball shoe in Albany, N.Y.

"I think it's tough,'' Marbury said, according to Albany TV station Capital News 9. "I think, you know, we don't say anything about people who shoot deer or shoot other animals. You know, from what I hear, dogfighting is a sport. It's just behind closed doors.''

On Monday, Vick said through a lawyer that he will plead guilty to a federal charge of conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiracy to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture. He also faces possible prosecution in Virginia.

"I think it's tough that we build Michael Vick up and then we break him down,'' Marbury said. "I think he's one of the superb athletes, and he's a good human being. I just think that he fell into a bad situation.''

Seems like Stephon should have just kept his mouth shut on this one. Regardless how he feels bout the situation, a simple no comment might have done him some good here.

I am highly doubting Vick had som Pit Bull FRied Rice, or some Doggy Jerky

Yeah you cant even compare the two really. there are regulations and permits and rules when hunting. And last time I checked, hunting was not a felony.

Hunters also dont catch their game and torture them i.e. hanging them, electrocute them, and hold their heads in a bucket of water until they die either

with hunting usually the animal is killed with one shot.

the same cant be said about pit bulls tearing each other apart and then having someone drown or electrocute them.

Just goes to show you that someone who has never hunted or been around hunting should NOT be making references to hunting when talking about felony dogfighting.

It's nice that you make your shows cheap for the kids, but you kinda showed some ignorance on that one

Pffffffffffffffffft. You're telling me that the Dick Cheney's and other rich folk hunt for food? You're crazy, they do it for fun and the sport of it.

Before anyone breaks out the rope to lynch me, I'm not a supporter of dog fighting by any means, but if you want to get technical hunting is killing animals. Maybe not as cruel as dog fighting, but it's still killing innocent animals for sport.

yeah, like I said, he shoulda just stuck wit the "No comment" and moved on. Vick aint the guy to back up right now, especially from a business stand point. Marbury is out there promoting his shoes. Last thing he wants is heat coming down on him and possibly costing him a lot of money in the future.

naw homie, I agree wit you 100%. hunting for sport and not for food is just as wrong in my eyes as forcing dogs to fight. I dont believe in any type of animal cruelty. but even more so wit dogs. no way in hell could I ever hurt a dogg, unless it was attacking me or a loved one.

I don't agree with what he did but he deserves a second chance. Today's society is quick to cast judgement. He is paying for his mistake big-time in lost wages, not playing ball, going to jail. People need to let it be.

i see what you are saying...but....dogs are pets to people, deer, turkeys, racoons, feasants, etc. etc. are not. Dogs have a personality and are people orienated.

i dont understand the whole hunting as a sport either if its not for using it for food or whatever, what is so sporty about waiting or stalking a harmless animal all day just to shoot it and cut its head off to put in your family room or wherever it is you want to put that kind of thing to show off to your friends. Look what I killed last week Ted, a harmless fucking deer not doing a damn thing but wandering around out in the country eating grass. WOW how proud you must be! lol Try going to Africa and hunting either a Lion, Tiger, Cheetah with a damn bow and arrow not a gun....now that is HUNTING!

and im sure somewhere out in the sticks of america there are some hillbillies that cage up 2 opossums for fun and watch them fight too, that is kind of cruel, but thats nature though....well not really...lol basically nobody would have opossums as pets is what im saying. so who cares...opossums are fucking MEAN and hideous anyway.

come on you cant seriously sit here and say hunters kill for the meat. thats bullshit, im sure thats a nice bonus but its about the thrill of the kill for most of em and they have proof hanging on their walls above their fireplace. i know hunters and im a fisherman myself, i catch and release and rarely take the fish home. so why am i fishing? its the thrill of the hunt.

well thats funny because out here in Colorado..you know where there are REAL mountains......I don't know a single person that hunts/fishes for fun...they do it for the meat.

They only catch and release AFTER they have reached thier limit for the day/weekend.

hey theres a such thing as overkill and this is the definition of it regarding the outrage displayed in this case. vick is going to play football again, if not for the simple fact that he probably knows other dog fighters in the nfl and the nfl WILL keep a lid on that if it means letting vick play sooner than the lynch mob feels he should be allowed. im just sayin, pretty soon people are going to put this into perspective and say ok enough is enough.
