If he's running (boxing) and throwing and landing punches in spurts while avoiding punches from clottey, how do you not score that round for Cotto? You cant say, "oh he was running so that's why clottey didn't land any punches so I'll score that for Clottey even though he didn't land anything." lol. Oscar didn't really land shit on tito when he was on his bike which is why he lost imo.

The object of the game is to hit and not be hit. There is a difference between blatant running and moving around and boxing. How smart would it be for Cotto to sit in the middle of the ring and bang with Clottey in the 12th round??
So what if Clottey decided to run (or box like you said) like Cotto was doing.... there wouldn't have been a fight. Clottey took the fight to Cotto, Cotto threw a few punches and ran and make Clottey chase him down. I don't agree with scoring that round in Cotto's favor. I could see if he was taking the fight to Clottey. I would score more in the favor of the "aggressor" it wasn't like Cotto was tagging Clottey.

^^^wouldn't call it a gift since you got quite a few people in this thread saying cotto won. Also, on message boards I've been too I seen one poll it was 150+ picked they thought cotto won and around 90 for clottey.

So close, yes, but I wouldn't call it a gift.

It was a close fight. I just saw Clottey landing harder shots, and more of them.

Although I do feel like he let Cotto steal a couple rounds by his inactivity...most notably in the later rounds.

I thought that the cut was bad enough to stop the fight, but Cotto is a warrior, and I knew he wasn't going to quit in front of his people.

Then I can beat Cotto.

1) I can move forward.
2) I can headbutt and cause gashes.
3) I can block all day.
4) I can throw an uppercut or a jab, then hide again.
5) I can also get knocked down, thrown down, and then make a ton of complaints.

Only thing left is the stamina to go 12, but I've got the key!!!

I think Clottey's stalking would count as effective aggressiveness. With the exception of a couple rounds, he was moving forward, picking off shots, and landing punches.

The headbutt was accidental, and Cotto had a choice to have the fight stopped and brought to the scorecards. He didn't, of course, and won anyways.

Clottey was the more accurate puncher...threw less, and landed more.

I just thought he won, but like I said, it wasn't a robbery by any means.

It's one of those fights that that the end, you look at cotto's face then clottey and recall all the times cotto seemed hurt, and it's easy to see why so many people think clottey won.

But you gotta remember it's 12 mini fights, whoever wins the most of those mini fights wins the game.

I don't see how Clottey won more rounds (remember gotta count the knockdown too). I can see it a draw at best for Clottey.

Anyways, respect to Clottey he's calling out Paul Williams right now. That will be a hell of a fight. And Cotto is going to get KO'd by Pacquiao late Oct/early Nov.

Clottey landed 229 punches landed to Cottos 175 punches landed, and he did so throwing less punches, and you don't see how he beat Cotto? Don't you know he was winning the 1st round until he got knocked down late in the round? He also landed the harder punches and more decisive blows and backed Cotto up for the majority of the fight. On another note, was punched in the back of the head, thrown to the floor (causing him to hurt his knee, which was why he had no lateral movement in the rounds he sat on the ropes), hit with a low blow, and headed butted (even though Cotto got the worst of it) and still did enough to be up on most score cards except for the Cotto fans and the judges who probably were paid to lean his way if he wasn't knocked out, and that's justifiable I guess. He did everything possible to win that fight and still came up short. Some say Clottey's stock went up in this fight, but I disagree. I believe because every promoter, manager and boxer he could fight saw him beat a game Cotto, he will continue be avoided almost as much as Williams because of the problems he will cause for their fighters.

On the other hand, I believe Cotto's stock has also went down but for other reasons, opening him up for fights that will pay him substantially, but also put him in harms way of being hurt really bad. He's always been a hittable fighter,. but now he is getting stunned and looking hurt alot worse than he did in his early part of his career. He doesn't want to see Mosley or Paul Williams or Clottey again for that matter. When Morales and Barrera fought to close fights, they did it again, When Corrales and Castillo fought close fights they did it again etc.... Cotto don't want to see Mosley or Clottey again if he has anything to do with it. Let him fight Pac. If he wins, they'll say Pac was too small, if loses, they say he's becoming a shot fighter.

^Great points! Clottey landed more blows and more effective blows while throwing less and was clearly the aggressor for most of the fight.

714Kalihydro, man keep it real. Clottey was not head butting. He wasn't even warned for doing anything dirty in this fight. Everybody and they momma know that head butt was accidental. Cotto was doing the dirty fighting... Cotto threw Clottey down and that caused him to hurt his knee (didn't you notice how he kept slipping when he would try to plant off of his lead foot). And don't forget about the shot to the back of the head, I guess you didn't see that either huh...

We can move on now! I agree with Morebass, Clottey wasn't "robbed" but he still won the fight.

Man, please don't use compubox for stats! It is simply two guys with a clicker! I remember one round cotto seemed to have landed 15-20 punches and yet compubox said he landed 9. Also, don't forget how cmopubox said Calzaghe landed 200 punches against Bernard Hopkins, which was a JOKE!

and still did enough to be up on most score cards except for the Cotto fans and the judges who probably were paid to lean his way if he wasn't knocked out, and that's justifiable I guess.
ESPN scored it 116-111 for Cotto.

He did everything possible to win that fight and still came up short.
I think he gave the championship rounds away, and like Dan Rafael said, when he had cotto hurt he didn't do anything, he let cotto survive. I blame Clottey for this loss.

Some say Clottey's stock went up in this fight, but I disagree. I believe because every promoter, manager and boxer he could fight saw him beat a game Cotto, he will continue be avoided almost as much as Williams because of the problems he will cause for their fighters.
The good news is Clottey vs Paul Williams is a very likely possibility.

I agree Cotto didn't look too impressive. I think that nasty cut did have something to do with it though, you must admit. I mean cotto was swiping at the blood throughout the fight and as one of the commentators pointed out it seemed like he couldn't see Clottey's right hands (I don't know WHY clottey didn't throw more!).

They both fought a little dirty but nothing too serious. As far as the Cotto throwing Clottey down, that was a weird sequence Clottey basically lunged and almost jumped on Cotto in the corner and cotto just through him off.

I thought Clottey was acting a bit there, especially when he barely got tapped on the back of the head in the 12th round, he was defniitely trying to get a point deduction.

Clottey is a fucking savage for calling out P-Will.

Gotta love fighters like that. Much respect for that. I didn't think Paul would be back at welter because of how he beat the shit out of Winky, but I'm glad someone has the spine to call him out.

Clottey is calling out Williams because he doesn't have alot of options, who's gonna fight him after the Cotto fight. As hard as Cotto punches, he didn't even buzz Clottey one time. He's hoping Williams will take the risk and fight him, and it would be just as risky if not more to fight Williams. This would be a great fight. We all know Cotto doesn't want anything to do with this rematch.

yeah, anybody besides Margarito is at a big disadvantage in fighting Williams in that weight division. Clotteys pretty crazy for this, i dont know how much of a shot he has.

just cuz Clottey was shaking his head doesnt mean Cottos punches didnt have any effect. Why would Cotto want to fight him again theres no money in it, if hes gonna get his ass whooped why not do it against Pacquiao? I swear some of yall dont realize that Clottey was landing all those rights cuz Cotto could barely see out his fucken eye, there is no excuse in the world for Clottey not winning this fight. His big ass fucken head is what gave him the big advantage.

Watched the fight again this is how I scored it:

1). Cotto - 10 Clottey - 8 (Knockdown)

2). Cotto - 9 Clottey 10 (clear round for Clottey)

3). Cotto - 10 Clottey 9 (cotto outworked clottey, more active)

4). Cotto - 10 Clottey 9 (pretty clear for cotto)

5). Cotto - 9 Clottey 10 (Clottey landed some huge shots)

6). Cotto - 10 Clottey 9 (Clottey trapped in corner over 2 min)

7). Cotto - 9 Clottey 10 (best round of fight for Clottey)

8). Cotto - 9 Clottey 10 (clear round for Clottey)

9). Cotto - 9 Clottey 10 (clear round for Clottey)

10). Cotto - 9 Clottey 10 (Clottey winning most of round late flurry for Cotto)

11). Cotto - 10 Clottey 9 (clear round for Cotto)

12). Cotto - 10 Clottey 9 (clear round for cotto, landed numerous shots and boxed effectively, Clottey didn't land a single meaningful shot until less than a minute in the round.

Final score - Cotto 114, Clottey 113.

Again, close fight, the knockdown was big and Clottey gave the fight away by letting cotto out-box him in the late rounds.

I don't get this Cotto avoiding ridiculousness. Cotto had absolutely no reason to fight Clottey. Clottey was stripped of his title so no unification, Clottey doesn't have a big name so it wasn't like people outside of people who watch boxing gave a shit about it and he took the fight before the Puerto Rican Day parade, who Cotto could have fought me and drew a large crowd too. The fact that he even choose to fight Clottey when he had a potential Pacquiao fight on the horizon says a lot about Cotto and his camp.

Who says that Cotto wouldn't give Clottey a rematch? Considering Cotto NEVER calls anyone out no one really knows his intentions down the line. Unless you're part of his camp we don't "all know this." Why the fuck should he take an immediate rematch with him when he has a chance to make Manny Pacquiao money?

Clottey lost this fight for the same reason that Winky lost the close decisions he did plus the draw he had with Taylor. Because he hangs out too much doing nothing at all. You can't sit on the ropes and take punches to the arms and expect to win a round no matter how many of those punches landed.
