Let the witch hunt begin

World Exclusive Article by Thomas Hauser

On September 9, 2015, an article I wrote entitled “Can Boxing Trust USADA?” was posted online, click here to read.

Among other things, the article reported that, eighteen days after the May 2 fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, the United States Anti-Doping Agency (which had contracted to oversee drug testing for the bout) granted Mayweather a retroactive therapeutic use exemption for a procedure that's on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) "Prohibited Substances and Methods List".

More specifically, on May 19, Mayweather applied for (and, on May 20, was granted) a therapeutic use exemption for what he says was an IV infusion of saline and vitamins that was administered on May 1.

The IV administration of legal substances of up to 50 milliliters per 6-hour period is permitted under WADA and USADA regulations. The administration of more than 50 milliliters per 6-hour period is prohibited because an IV infusion can dilute or mask the presence of another substance that is already in the recipient’s system or might be added to it in the near future.

Mayweather acknowledges having received an IV infusion of 750 milliliters (25.361 ounces), an amount equal to roughly 16 percent of the blood normally present in an average adult male.

A September 10, 2015, statement from USADA in response to “Can Boxing Trust USADA?” reads in part, “Because Mr. Mayweather was voluntarily taking part in a USADA program, and therefore subject to the rules of the WADA Code, he took the additional step of applying for a TUE after the IV infusion was administered in order remain in compliance with the USADA program.”

In other words, USADA concedes that, without the retroactive therapeutic use exemption, Mayweather would have been in violation of the WADA code.

“Can Boxing Trust USADA?” raised other issues as well. Most notable among these were questions regarding the results of two testosterone-to-epitestosterone-ratio tests administered to Mayweather and USADA’s handling of tests that found Clenbuterol (a prohibited drug) in Erik Morales’s system. However, public reaction to the article focused on the IV that was administered to Mayweather.

Lucas Matthysse’s supporters plead for change and another chance

In the wake of Lucas Matthysse’s devastating loss to Viktor Postol on Oct. 3, members of his entourage, family and former team members have taken to social media and other outlets to vent their frustration at what they perceive as a less-than-ideal training regime for the Argentine slugger.

“I am holding back a few things just so I don’t hurt some people,” said Lucas’ sister Soledad Matthysse, herself a unified WBA/WBC female featherweight titlist, leading the charge in an appearance on local radio show “Cerca del Ring.” “Personally, I saw that my brother’s arms felt heavier, as if he had over-trained. I asked him a few things about his training and perhaps it was his swimming or his weight-lifting work.”

When asked about what exactly went wrong, Soledad quickly pointed at a general lack of direction within the training camp.

“There were no ideas,” said Soledad. “Every fighter has a Plan A but then there’s a Plan B and a Plan C but we didn’t see [those]. Everyone was banking on Lucas landing a couple of big shots and then the fight would be over but that didn’t happen and that’s when the ideas didn’t surface.”

Without pointing fingers or “naming names,” Soledad did underline the general impression whispered among Argentine fans and press alike about the size and scope of Lucas’ training staff, comprised by a large and diverse group of people that includes two trainers (Luis Barrera and former champ Juan Coggi), as well as a physician and a physical trainer.

Soledad simply expressed the concerns about a team in which job descriptions are sketchy at best, which leads to a few areas being left unattended while others are given too much attention and with virtually everyone weighing in on every issue.

“Arano, please, clean up Lucas’ entourage,” pleaded Soledad in one of her few comments directed to a specific member of Team Matthysse, in this case, his manager/promoter Mario Arano. “If Lucas wants to be a champion, he has to think about himself, not about his friendships. If people love him, they will let him go and allow him to continue growing. I have nothing against Arano; we get along very well. But Lucas will have to sit down and fix a few things, make a general ‘housekeeping’ job. I heard that [punching pad expert and former lightweight contender Eduardo] ‘The Surgeon’ Morales is not part of the team anymore. He used to be a big help. I believe Lucas has a lot of people doing nothing around him.”

Morales’ absence was noticeable to Soledad in Lucas’ movement around the ring and in his general mobility, which was critical against Postol.

“Perhaps he needed someone who would push him in his punching pad routine, to force him to move around,” said Soledad. “I never do pad work with someone who’s just standing in front of me. I use people who force me to move my legs and move around the ring.”

Morales himself agreed wholeheartedly.

“They told me they didn’t need me because they had a lot of sparring partners,” said Morales, during an interview with local website Campeones en el Ring. “In the two fights I worked with Lucas [against Roberto Ortiz and Ruslan Provodnikov], he was fast, accurate and motivated. This time, he didn’t shine, he didn’t work on his sidestepping or his waist movement and he was unable to dodge Postol’s jabs.”

Morales was surprised to learn that his services were not required for this particular fight, in which Postol’s style required the former’s work.

“The key was not to fight head-on but rather to allow [Postol] to box and come in diagonally moving [Lucas’] waist to dodge Postol’s straight hands. That’s what I learned in the Cuban school; that’s how you close in on a guy with long arms,” said Morales, who fought Shane Mosley for the IBF 135-pound title back in 1998 and has been making a name for himself as a trainer ever since.

Morales went further by doubling down on his comments and going against Team Matthysse’s decision to train in Argentina.

“It is good to train in the States because that’s where the big leagues are and there are a lot of sparring partners that are up to Lucas’ level. Lucas needs to train there two months before his fights. I hope [Matthysse’s promoter] Oscar De La Hoya can arrange a rematch against Postol. I believe Lucas deserves it and I believe he [would have] won.”

Soledad joined Morales in his clamor to Golden Boy Promotions’ big boss.

“All I ask is that Oscar will give him another chance and I hope people don’t abandon Lucas like they did after his fight against Danny Garcia,” said Soledad. “A lot of people left Lucas after that fight and that was very painful. A lot of people don’t know it but Lucas was really feeling down after that fight.”

Rosado on Kirkland: He Asked For 'Double' The Purse!

Posted by: Steve Kim on 10/15/2015 .

By Steve Kim

At this time last week it looked like a junior middlweight crossroads bout between Gabe Rosado and James Kirkland was going to take place at the Forum in Inglewood, California on December 19th, as part of an HBO 'Boxing After Dark' telecast.

But alas, the flighty Kirkland changed his mind abruptly.

"I was nervous about it,"admitted Rosado on Thursday afternoon at the Madison Square Garden, where he was in attendance for the undercard press conference for the Golovkin-Lemieux pay-per-view show that takes place on Saturday night.

"I was like,'Man, he's so unpredictable, you never know with him.' And he did exactly what I was scared off, pulling out of the fight."

According to Rosado - "We signed the contracts, it was a done deal. They said we were good to go on December 19th in Los Angeles, it was the main event on HBO. It's a great opportunity and he just all of a sudden starts asking for double the purse and I'm just like - 'Why, we're good. We'll make some good money, main event on HBO. We both got the opportunity to get back on the map.' So I don't know, I just don't know how he works."

Rosado last fought on December 6th, 2014, where he was stopped in ten by David Lemieux. Now he finds himself looking for another fight.

"I spoke with (Golden Boy) today and they told me about a good fight. They definitely want me to fight again this year, possibly an opener for HBO at the end of the year. So it's not guaranteed, yet, but that's what I'm hoping for," said Rosado, who has a record of 21-9 (13 KO's).

Premier Boxing Champions is coming to Fox network - Dan Rafael Blog - ESPN

Premier Boxing Champions cards are coming to the Fox network in prime time.

Fighter adviser and manager Al Haymon, the creator of PBC, who is using some $450 million in investor money for the project, has purchased time on a variety of networks for PBC events, including ESPN, NBC, NBC Sports Net, CBS, Spike TV, Bounce TV and Fox Sports 1. Now you can add the main Fox network.

Fox sent out notification to its affiliates across the country this week announcing the series was coming to the network and letting them know how much commercial time they would have available to sell during each two-hour card.

Fox will air at least three PBC card in 2016, all on Saturday nights from 8 p.m. ET to 10 p.m. ET. The debut card is scheduled for Jan. 23 followed by shows on March 12 and July 16.

There is no word yet on where the events will take place or what fights will be scheduled.

PBC did not respond to a request from ESPN.com for comment.

Dan Rafael chat wrap 10/16:

GGG vs. Lemieux:
- The fight was designed with a lower cost structure (for a PPV). The event needs to get about 200k buys to start turning a profit. He expects it to sell high 200's to low 300k's. If the fight sells over 300k, all parties involved will consider it a huge success.
- Gonzalez may have been struggling to make weight. The day before he looked fine and was pleasant to deal with, but he would sip water and spit it back out.
- He believes GGG is the single most must see fighter in boxing.
- Wouldn't be surprised if the fight was like Matthysse-Garcia and Lemieux turned out to be Garcia.
- Weak year for fighter of the year candidates. Wouldn't rank GGG there, even with a win tonight. Honorable mention, yes.
- Will GGG be knocked down? Interesting...will say, no.
- Other full venue sell outs at MSG? Remembers that Cotto-Judah and Cotto-Margarito 2 were.
- GGG vs. Lee, before fighting the Canelo-Cotto winner? Possible. It would take WBC approval and step aside agreement by the Canelo-Cotto winner.
- GGG is very well preserved for his age of 33. He was poorly promoted by his past promoter (Universum), which caused his delay in getting into the US market. He hasn't taken a lot of punishment in the pro's.
- Picking: GGG by KO6, and Gonzalez by KO9.
- Lemieux is a cool guy. He is supremely confident and has a lot of swagger, but isn't over the top in how he presents himself.
- Ortiz has incredible power. Expects him to win rather easily.
- Johnson vs. O'Kane is an eliminator to become the mandatory for the winner of GGG-Lemieux.
- GGG and Abel Sanchez is like the new Manny and Freddie.
- The drums and bells fans brought for Trinidad-Joppy at MSG were insane. There were also people tailgating hours before the fight on 7th avenue in Manhattan.
- Does not agree with Teddy Atlas that Thurman has more potential to be a bigger boxing star than GGG. GGG has Pacquiao potential.

The rest of boxing:
- RJJ is not a legit contender at CW.
- Khan hasn't backed out of negotiations with Pacquiao, but is mouthing off. He needs to learn to quit being so vocal during key negotiation moments. It works to his detriment.
- Bracero is unlikely to take a fight against Algieri.
- Around the Juan Urango fight thought Devon Alexander was the next big thing and had skills comparable to Floyd's. What happened?
- Thought Alexander deserved to win in a close, but bad performance.
- No word on what is next for LSC.
- PBC is still not making money, but that is too be expected - they had planned on still not making money at this point.
- Guerrero vs. Alexander? Actually not a bad fight.
- Does not think we see Postol vs. Crawford in 2016.
- Dejan Zavec is the mandatory for Linares, but it probably does not have to be his next fight.
- Prime Pacquiao vs. prime Whitaker? Whitaker.
- Kovalev vs. Pascal rematch? Likely not in 2016.
- Doubt we see Kovalev vs. Fonfara. But would like to see it.
- The winner of Cotto-Canelo is a good contender for FOTY. Mayweather is probably the frontrunner.
- Wlad's next mandatory, after Fury, is Glazkov.
- Ward will be on the undercard for Cotto-Canelo. Expect it to be announced sometime after the GGG-Lemieux fight.
- Juan Diaz will not be back until early next year. He wants to keep fighting at 135.
- It is Kirkland, not his manager, who makes these business decisions.
- Andrade messed up not taking some past fights and believes that he realizes it.
- It is criminal that James Toney is still allowed to fight.
- Monaghan is a nice guy and hard worker, but very limited skill wise.
- Did not include Randall Bailey in his top 10 hardest punchers because he is no longer very active or a top fighter.
- Has seen some of the payout sheets for PBC and the purses for cards are starting to drop, especially for the lower tier fights on the cards.
- Toney vs. Hopkins at 160? Toney.
- Kell Brook out of the Chaves fight with a rib injury. Showtime cancelled the telecast.
- Asked Duran if he would have beaten Floyd. He said "No problem", flexed and kissed his bicep and then drank his Corona. He agrees that Duran would win.
- Duran vs. Hatton in a drinking contest? Duran via upset.
- Stiverne is supposed to be on the GRJ card next month.
- Montiel fought well and doesn't look done. Probably better for him to fight at 122.

Boxer Prichard Colon reportedly in coma after fight in Fairfax

By Gene Wang October 17 at 10:32 PM

Boxer Prichard Colon was taken to Inova Fairfax hospital early Saturday evening after experiencing dizziness and vomiting in his dressing room and, according to multiple reports, underwent surgery for bleeding on the brain as a result of his bout against Terrel Williams.

Several of those reports also indicated Colon was in a coma following the operation, citing family members’ updates from the hospital. It’s unclear if the coma was medically induced.

Colon was fighting on the undercard of Lamont Peterson’s majority decision over Felix Diaz at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax. The previously undefeated Puerto Rican was disqualified before the start of the 10th and final round for the first loss of the 154-pounder’s career.

In one of the more peculiar sequences even for boxing, Colon’s corner began removing his gloves after the ninth round, apparently unaware the fight had not ended. Eventually realizing there was another round left, Colon’s corner tried to get his gloves back on, but too much time had passed, and referee Joseph Cooper signaled for a disqualification.

Colon (16-1, 13 knockouts) was behind on the scorecards during a fight in which he received a two-point deduction in Round 5 for a low blow.

Williams left no doubt about his superiority by sending Colon down twice in the ninth round. The second knockdown came seconds before the bell, and Colon appeared woozy and incoherent.

During the fight, Colon complained to Cooper about getting hit with punches to the back of his head. At one point, Colon, 23, had to take a lengthy period in the middle of a round to collect himself. Cooper later deducted one point from Williams (15-0, 12 KOs) in Round 7 for a rabbit punch.

Oscar De La Hoya: Canelo will be ready for Golovkin -- eventually
By Bad Left Hook and fighthub on Oct 18, 2015, 6:33a 2

Oscar De La Hoya doesn't sound like he's eager to put a time frame on a fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin.

The winner of Canelo vs Cotto will have 15 days to accept or reject the Golovkin fight before WBC takes action.

Does Oscar really think if Canelo wins he's going to be willing to allow to be stripped of his title and labeled a ducker? The Mexican in him won't allow it. Oscar should know better, he himself was a very prideful fighter who always fought the best.

Antonio Tarver failed drug test before Steve Cunningham bout

http://www.si.com/boxing/2015/10/19/...g-championship

Quote:
NEW YORK — Former light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver tested positive for a banned substance prior to his fight with Steve Cunningham last August, multiple sources familiar with the positive test told SI.com. It’s the second failed drug test in the last three years for Tarver, who tested positive for an anabolic steroid in 2012 before his fight with Lateef Kayode. That positive test earned Tarver a $2,500 fine and a one-year suspension from the California State Athletic Commission.

Tarver, 46, is one of the bigger names associated with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions series. Advanced drug testing was used for Tarver-Cunningham, per sources. When Tarver’s ‘A’ sample tested positive, Tarver requested the ‘B’ sample be tested. That sample also tested positive, per a source.

Tarver’s positive test was for synthetic testosterone, per two sources familiar with the results.
