photo: julio cesar chavez jr By Dan Ambrose: It’s been 11 months since the last time former WBC 160 pound champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (48-1-1, 32 KOs) last fought, and it’ll be over a year by the time he faces #4 WBC light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara (26-3, 15 KOs) in their catch-weight fight on April 18th, if Chavez Jr’s promoter Bob Arum doesn’t stop the fight from taking place.

Arum has repeatedly said recently that Chavez Jr still has one more fight on his contract with Top Rank, and that if he attempts to fight outside of his contract, he’ll get an injunction to halt the fight from taking place. However, Chavez Jr., 28, is saying that he’s checked with his lawyers and that he thinks Arum can’t do anything to stop his fight with Fonfara from taking place.

We’ll soon know if Chavez Jr is right or if Arum will be able to legally block the fight from taking place. If Arum does get his way and is able to block the fight legally, then Chavez Jr is going to need to make a decision on whether to do that fight with Top Rank or to appeal it.

“We’re going to try and 3 or 4 fights to make up for the time we lost,” Chavez Jr said to ESPN Deportes. “My lawyers tell me that the fight can’t be stopped, and it’s already done. Bob Arum can’t stop it. I’m happy where I’m at. He can say whatever he wants like he has for Mayweather-Pacquiao, that we have a contract. But in reality contracts are signed for this fight, and the fight will happen.”

The contracts being signed for the Chavez Jr vs. Fonfara fight doesn’t necessarily mean that Arum can’t still block the fight from taking place. It just means Chavez Jr signed a contract. Who knows? Arum could be bluffing about wanting to block the Chavez Jr-Fonfara fight, although I don’t think so. I believe that Arum is going to attempt to block the fight. It’s unclear at this point if he can stop it from going ahead.

It’s hard to see Chavez Jr fighting 3 or 4 times in a short period of time. He tends to disappear for long stretches after his fights, and I suspect that we’ll probably see him fight only twice in 2015. If he beats Fonfara next, and Arum isn’t able to block him, then we’ll see Chavez Jr fighting in the summer against WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch.

Chavez Jr hasn’t done anything to deserve a world title shot at 168 against Froch, as he’s only fought once at super middleweight and that was against middleweight journeyman Brian Vera in his last fight. Before that, Chavez Jr fought Vera at light heavyweight.

So in other words, Chavez Jr has never even fought a super middleweight before. He’ll be getting the Froch fight over other top contenders, and the World Boxing Association would have to sanction the fight as having the WBA title up for grabs. They will sanction the fight due to Chavez Jr being automatically ranked high by the World Boxing Council at #3, despite Chavez Jr having fought nobody in the division. He was just given a high ranking off of no wins in the division.

Manager: Chris Avalos is ‘ready to rock’ vs. Carl Frampton
February 4, 2015

Chris Avalos will “dominate” IBF junior featherweight titleholder Carl Frampton on Feb. 28 at the Odyssey Arena in Frampton’s hometown of Belfast, Northern Ireland, Avalos’ manager, Mike Criscio insists.

“Chris is ready to rock,” said Criscio of Avalos, who has been sparring twice weekly at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, Calif., as well as training at the Durango Boxing Club. “I think Chris will dominate Frampton. Chris is very tough, strong, has a lot of pride and is hungry to win a world championship.”

RING No. 5-ranked junior featherweight Avalos (25-2, 19 knockouts) had been the mandatory challenger to the WBO belt held by RING champion Guillermo Rigondeaux, who also holds the WBA title. In September, however, Avalos declined a planned Nov. 22 bout against Rigondeaux that was targeted for either Miami or the Dominican Republic, according to a Tweet by WBO President Paco Valcarcel, doing so to pursue a shot at Frampton (19-0, 13 KOs).

“Carl Frampton is a terrific young champion but with Chris’ punching power it really doesn’t matter where the fight is. The partisan crowd won’t affect Chris at all,” said Carl Moretti, vice president of boxing operations for Top Rank Promotions. “He has one goal: to become the new IBF champion. There will be plenty of celebrating after the fight but it will be Chris and his team having the honors.”

Avalos, 25, has won six consecutive fights, four by knockout, including stoppages in the past three since losing a split decision to Jhonatan Romero in Dec. 2011. Avalos is coming off November’s fifth round knockout of Jose Cen Torres.

Avalos became the IBF’s mandatory challenger with his eighth-round stoppage of Yasutaka Ishimoto in May at a time when the organization’s beltholder still was Kiko Martinez.

Martinez secured an exception from the IBF to face Frampton rather than Avalos and lost his title to Frampton via unanimous decision in a September rematch of Frampton’s ninth-round stoppage win from Feb. 2013.

Although RING No. 1-rated Frampton, 27, was injured in the bout with Martinez and was expected to be sidelined until November, IBF Championships Chairman Lindsey Tucker informed RingTV.com that he was contacted by Top Rank regarding its pursuit of a fight with Frampton.

“I’ve been working on using a lot of combinations,” said Avalos. “I used to be straight-ahead brawling but we’re boxing more, throwing more jabs, mixing it up.”

Canelo is gonna take it steady this year. GGG is coming next year. It all depends on who Cotto fights next. If Cotto fights Floyd, then Cotto in September. If Cotto fights GGG, which I have personal hopes for, then Lemieux or maybe Lee if he beats Quillin in September. Then a unification bout with GGG will be huge. Over 1 mill buys

^I wanna see Canelo vs GGG more than any other fight right now, even more than PBF vs Manny. I think that fight would kill it both in numbers and with the actual fight.
Yes. It will happen. Canelo has balls. Cotto lost his apparently after beating Maravilla . Fucking diva's are taking over the sport.

This will be a true Mexican war, end of 2015 hopefully. If not May 2016.

Exactly, people can talk about how many holes in Canelo's game there are. And they're right, but the guy has balls. You don't really see many fighters these days taking risks with the fights they take. And the Lara decision I didn't agree with, but that's not his fault. He stands up and gets into the ring, can't ask for more from a fighter. GGG seems the same, though he hasn't yet fought elite competition.

weird I just made a post but it disappeared.

^Right, I don't think it's his fault either. He's been calling guys out since he first fought in the states.
And before the states he was being ducked by then champ Felix Sturm, who GGG was mandatory to for TWO years. Also on two occasions N'dam was ordered to a purse bid to fight GGG but N'dam never showed up.

The IBF just officially stripped Jermaine Taylor of his title. So that vacant title will now be fought for by the two next highest ranked available fighters, ironically that is N'dam and Felix Sturm. However I don't think Sturm is going to take it as he'll make more money fighting zee German's, so the next guy up is Billy Joe Saunders, so it's looking like it will be N'dam vs Saunders for the IBF strap (Sturm has until Monday to decide).

February 06, 2015

Reports are that Al Haymon's new boxing series "Premier Boxing Champions" maybe heading to ESPN.

Haymon announced his television deals, last month with NBC and Spike Tv. Like these two deals the supposed deal with ESPN is also part of a time buy by Haymon Boxing.

NBC's deal calls for 20 'Premier Boxing Champions' events for 2015. 11 of the 20 cards will be shown on NBC and the rest will be shown on NBC sports. The deal with Spike Tv Calls for 33 cards on Friday nights, 9 in 2015 and 12 per year in 2016 and 2017.

The deal with ESPN has no details available as of yet. Haymon's company will be paying for TV time. The series maybe held on ESPN or possibly ESPN2's Friday night Fight. Or possibly be aired on a different day of the week as Premier Boxing Champions. But none of this has been confirmed as of yet.

Haymon is just having it his way. With well over 150 fighters this is the best way for all his fighters to get seen more. According to BoxingScene.com Haymon is also in the process of a time buy deal with Telemundo, BET and CBS Sports.
