Trainer says Margarito had eye surgery, denies handwrap charges

According to Antonio Margarito's manager Sergio Diaz, Margarito had eye surgery just over a week before stepping into a boxing ring against Shane Mosley. Speaking after Maragarito's stoppage loss to Shane Mosley on Saturday night, Diaz was gracious and gave credit to Mosley for "fighting a hell of a fight and did not want to take anything away from the guy. It was not Tony's night and it definitely was Shane's." But Diaz went on to say that "Antonio had to have surgery on his eye a little over a week ago." When asked why couldn't it wait, Diaz said, "he had a problem with his eye and he had to have the surgery to fight. His retina could have become detatched if he fought without the surgery."

Diaz stressed again that he didn't want to take anything from Mosley. When asked about the growing controversy that Margarito was caught with an illegal hardening substance on his handwraps before the fight and was forced to put on clean wraps, Diaz said, "It got blown out of proportion. They checked Tony's hands. He had one hand wrapped and he was wrapping the other. They said his other hand was wrapped too high. Tony didn't want that to be an issue so he had me cut the wrap off his other hand and he wrapped them both to their satisfaction on the spot." When informed that some rumors had Margarito getting caught with plaster of paris or another foreign substance in his wraps, Diaz flatly denied it. "No. No way. They were just wrapped too high for their liking."

In the postfight press conference Mosley was asked what he knew about the controversy. Mosley said, "I was aware of it but I didn't let it bother me one way or another. I don't think that Margarito was trying to do something illegal. My trainer did his job and caught him and he had to wrap his hands the same way I wrapped mine. He probably wanted extra protection for his hands."

Mayweather-Mosley: Fight Talks To Begin Shortly

By Mark Vester

Shane Mosley crashed his way to the top of the welterweight ranks when he knocked out Antonio Margarito to capture the WBA welterweight title before a jam-packed crowd at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The next fight for Mosley is already being worked on, and Golden Boy Promotions is set to begin talks with the camp of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told Mosley after his win over Margarito - "I will start having conversations with Team Mayweather tomorrow morning."

A fight between Mosley and Mayweather has been in talks on a number of occassions. The rivalry started when Floyd was a super featherweight champion and Mosley was the king of lightweights. The two were in talks for a fight back then but negotiations fell apart. Mosley would later jump from lightweight to welterweight. Years later, when Mayweather and Mosley were both at campaigning at 147, the sides tried once more to make a fight and once again their talks fell apart.

Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather close friend and adviser, was contacted by the paper for his thoughts on a Mosley showdown. Ellerbe would only respond with "Floyd is retired" and apparently did not go any further. Keep in mind that only a few weeks ago, Ellerbe came out in several interviews and said Mayweather had directed him to hear out any major fight offers.

I'm getting really sick of boxing. The politics, money, cheating, etc. I've been a true fan since I was a little kid and I'm trying very hard to stay loyal.

Enough with the mega fights. I've been saying this for years. Let's give the mandatories a shot...

Until then we will be circling around with the same names, like we have been.

i just want to make sure ya'll know i picked Mosley to win this fight by decision BEFORE the fight even starts. i dont want it to look like i came in here after he won and put my vote down for him...lol

i can already tell there is gonna be alot of late votes.
i was right...there was alot of post fight votes.

bosstycoon was the only one that had mosley winning by knockout at the time of my vote, which was a couple hours before it started.

congrats boss on calling the KO, i never thought mosley would ko him like that with the way margarito could take a punch.

what the hell would be wrong with mosley vs mayweather? that's a fight the fans would want to see. I'm all for mandatories too, but seriously that's a great fight!

Mayweather is retired, and everyone keeps bugging him to come out.
If he wins he will just go back into retirement and people will say Shane is too old. If he loses, people will say it was his inactivity. It doesn't really accomplish anything. They are both just looking for paydays. I would obviously watch the fight. In the meantime there are people like Clottey who really deserve a fight.

Paul Williams needs to move up in weight and stop fighting smaller fighters. As for Mosley no he shouldnt fight Mayweather, he will get his ass whooped. Margarito and Mayweather is a big difference in skill level. How about Margarito and P. Williams fight again since they both like fighting smaller fighters cuz there first fight was the tale of 2 fights. Mosley i have no clue whats next for him, he should fight Clottey

Tony... Thanks for acknowledging that for ya boy. It went down just like I said it would. It just goes to show that anybody who thought Margarito could beat Mosley don't know styles make fights and Margarito was made to lose to Mosley... Again, I told ya... Now you know what I already knew months ago... If he can't make the fight with Mayweather, how bout Mosely Vs .Pacquiao... I'll take Mosley by knock out or unanimous decision
