Cody Ross will start season on DL after MRI shows torn calf muscl

One look at Cody Ross in his walking boot and crutch and it was obvious: He’s not going to be in the Giants lineup for the March 31 season opener.

Ross said an MRI exam showed a moderate strain of his right calf. All strains are muscle tears to some degree, and this one was significant enough that he’ll need at least three weeks to heal and complete the rehab work. The Giants are sure to place Ross on the DL to open the season.

He’ll be in the boot and use the crutch for another 48 hours or so. Then he’ll continue to rest for a week before beginning rehab work.

For Ross, the worst part is not being able to play on opening day.

“That’s the hardest thing,” he said. “That part is toughest to swallow, not being able to contribute to the team from day one. But it could be worse. The most important thing is to get it right so I don’t have to worry about this in June or July. You don’t want it to linger. If it means missing a handful of games, that’s what we have to do.”

Ross hurt the calf when he took a first step in right field Wednesday at Tempe. He said the MRI pretty much confirmed what he already suspected.

The Giants have a few options to replace Ross. In today’s lineup, they stated Nate Schierholtz in right field. They also could move Andres Torres to right and play Aaron Rowand in center. Or, and this seems to be the choice of Giants Nation, they could play Aubrey Huff in right field — where he played for a time last season — and start rookie Brandon Belt at first base. (They also could start Travis Ishikawa at first base in that alignment if Belt begins at Triple-A Fresno.)

It should become clear in the next few days how Ross’s injury will affect the guys on the bubble (Schierholtz, Rowand and Ishikawa) and the lineup.

* Buster Posey tops Jon Paul Morosi's list of candidates to become baseball's next superstar at FOX Sports.
* Giants manager Bruce Bochy did not make an announcement on whether top prospect Brandon Belt will make the team, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle (on Twitter).
* Jon Heyman of SI.com offers some predictions for the coming season and two young Giants, Posey (NL MVP) and Belt (NL Rookie of the Year) figure prominently into Heyman's prognostications. Heyman also says the Giants "will prove that they are no fluke, winning the NL West."
* Tim Lincecum is one of the few true aces in baseball, according to baseball people who spoke to Tyler Kepner of the New York Times. What differentiates aces from other good pitchers? Giants GM Brian Sabean says the best pitchers inspire confidence when they pitch. “There’s a difference in your clubhouse,” Sabean said. “People are thinking, ‘This is win day.’ ”

Giants Release Jeff Suppan
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [March 29, 2011 at 7:59pm CST]

The Giants released Jeff Suppan, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle (on Twitter). GM Brian Sabean says the decision was mutual, since Suppan wasn't going to make the team. The right-hander is now looking for a job elsewhere.

Suppan posted a 7.84 ERA in 15 appearances with the Brewers before they released him last year. He then appeared in 15 games for St. Louis and posted a much-improved 3.84 ERA for the Cardinals. Overall, he logged 101 1/3 innings and posted a 5.06 ERA with 4.5 K/9, 3.3 BB/9 and a 40.3% ground ball rate.

Sabean signed Suppan in January to provide depth and insurance, but did not need him in the end. He could have earned $1MM for making the team.
