Will boxing return to The Stadium?

More than 30 years after a near-disaster, Bob Arum may get a crack at promoting another boxing match in Yankee Stadium.
Arum has all but finalized a welterweight title doubleheader for April 12 in Atlantic City, N.J., but the kicker is that he is hoping to have the winners meet on July 26 in Yankee Stadium.
Miguel Cotto will defend his WBA welterweight belt against reality series star Alfonso S. Gomez, while Antonio Margarito will challenge Kermit Cintron for the IBF crown in an HBO-televised doubleheader from Boardwalk Hall on April 12.
Arum is hoping for a Cotto-Margarito bout, since he promotes both men. But as long as Cotto wins, Arum will then pit him against the winner of the Margarito-Cintron fight in New York.
Arum said Madison Square Garden is on hold in case a deal can't be reached for Yankee Stadium, but he's hopeful to be able to pull it off.
"There's something about saying you have an event in Yankee Stadium," said Arum, a native New Yorker and diehard New York Giants' fan. "The connotation when you put an event there, whether it's a fight or a concert or whatever, is that it is huge."
If the July 26 bout lands in Yankee Stadium, it won't be Arum's first, though he'll undoubtedly have more luck than he did on his first venture.
That night, despite the presence of the greatest draw in the history of the sport in the main event, Arum sold only eight tickets on the night of the fight.
On Sept. 28, 1976, Muhammad Ali defended the WBA and WBC heavyweight titles against Ken Norton. But because there was a police strike in New York then, Arum's visions of a killer box office never materialized.
He didn't lose a lot of money because of good pre-fight ticket sales, but Arum said he anticipated a major windfall. But with the police on strike, gang members were running rampant in the area around the stadium.
"Fans got out of the (subway) and looked around and turned around and went back," he said. "They were all afraid. New York was a different place back then. This is a huge thing, Ali, the title, the third fight between these guys, outdoors at Yankee Stadium. I'm thinking this is going to be as big a fight as it gets.
"And then that's the night the police strike started and we were killed. I remember we had 108 ticket takers set up and we only sold eight tickets. It's almost impossible to believe that, but it's true."
He expects to do better for both the April 12 show and then the subsequent fight in July. The unbeaten Cotto is a huge draw in the Metropolitan New York area because of the large contingent of Puerto Ricans living there.
Cotto, who is No. 4 on the Yahoo! Sports top 10, drew 21,000 to Madison Square Garden for a June fight against Zab Judah and then nearly 18,000 for a November bout with Shane Mosley.
He should have few problems against Gomez, who was an unexpected star on Season 1of the boxing reality series, The Contender, when it was on NBC.
But even though Margarito destroyed Cintron when they fought on April 23, 2005, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for the WBO belt that Margarito then held, that bout should be much more interesting this time around.
Cintron hired noted trainer Emanuel Steward and has become one of the most improved fighters in the world. He's subsequently won the IBF title, which he'll defend against Margarito, who knocked him out in five rounds in 2005.
"Cotto and Gomez should be a very entertaining fight for as long as it goes," Arum said. "Of course, we are hoping for and expect Cotto to win, but Gomez is a tough kid and he comes to fight and he puts on a show every time. That's should be a lot of fun.
"And this other fight, who knows how it is going to come out? I know this, it's going to be one where both of them fight and don't run around and dance. This is the way it should be."

And if Cintron loses, again, I have a feeling we will see one of the wildest meltdowns in the ring since Bite Night. He has been borderline obsessed with Margarito since he lost (and cried in the ring!). He has made so many excuses and never accepted that he got beat, always blames it on this and that. That was a huge blow to his ego when he lost and if he loses again, I think some funny shit will go down!
