I see what you are saying but I know for a fact you can make a lot money out the trunk also. Coop started a thread about out the trunk vs sound scan and I wrote a big reply and when I hit submit he has already delete the thread. I really feel to sell records in the store you really need radio promotion and video promotion and that could cost a pretty penny. I think trunk sales get you a bigger fan base but not all of them will go to the store to get your next cd but it is a huge promotion for you and some will look you up online on your myspace, website or whatever. But a lot people I know are selling the most via itunes but since there is no placement programs and stuff like that you are just a record under a huge stack of thousands of other artist and I think thats where the trunk sales and street promotion comes in to help those sales. Magazine interviews and ads also help a lot. The Bonafide dudes told me they saw you in Az doing promotion for your last record and they sold about 35 cd's there at just the one spot you were at. They make a pretty good living and support a whole team. There is a lot of cost involved also...Buying cars, gas, hotels, pay roll, making new music, buying beats, mixing, mastering, etc and out the trunk is not a easy business I just think it helps promotional wise and you can get some money in the process. A lot of artist dont do it cause they dont know were in other cities to reach their target market and you get a lot of rejections and that is bad for the ego.
I know where a lot of artist lack is merchandising...They do these shows and maybe sell some cd's, but other stuff like t-shirts and misc crap really sell and people like to bring home that crap as a memory of a show
