I would say all those people did blow up off features... Wayne started getting credibility with the critics with the mixtapes but the features are what made him hot.

Chamillionaire blew up along with the rest of texas and off of riding and then fell off in the mainstream cuz he doesn't do any features even though his material is better than ever

and plies blew up off all those r&b features
most people don't know he even has "hard" songs

so unless tech starts getting features and shit i don't think the mixtape will really help. but then again, the mixtape could help him get big in the rap community so he could get features... which is pretty much what happened to all the people you mentioned so more or less i guess the mixtape really is the what makes you big or starts it anyway.
