Actually, you do. Italian-Americans, German-Americans, Irish-Americans. More often than not (from what I've seen anyway) a white person will not say "American" when asked what they are. They will usually say, "Bulgarian, Italian, Irish, German, Russian, Greek, French, Spanish" etc. etc.

The thing is, "American" is not an ethnicity. It might be a culture, but it is not an ethnicity. Not even NATIVES are "American". If I was born in Africa to Italian parents, I wouldn't be African...I'd be Italian. Place of birth does not dictate ethnicity, and therefore nobody is really "American". This is just one big melting pot made up of different ethnicities from around the world.

With that said, I laugh at people that scream "I'M AMERICAN" when asked what they are. 'Cause REALLY, they're not. They are SOMETHING-American, if anything.

to make it simple, the white ethnic groups, after WWII, were accepted by large by Anglo whites (the descendants of pilgrims all the blue blood white peeps who have been here for centuries). THis was done by accepting ethnic whites into the communities of Anglo whites which lead to them using the same facilities and mixing into a big ol pot of whiteness. THat's how white is white in America, besides 'weird' white people like Armenians, and Russians, and ethnic holidays like "St. Patricks Day".

Latinos, and Blacks on the other hand had been fighting for years to joininto the establishment, but to no avail. THey also were fighting for their own names. For example blacks have gone from Nigresses, negro, colored, black, African-American...THis whole time the establishment, white power structure, government whatever you wanna call it named blacks whatever they wanted to but still denied blacks the right of white Americans. ("Latinos" got thrown all over the place, they were hispanics, but classified as white, and mixed in with other latin groups, then the term Latino came about to put them into a benefecil political bloc). Anyway, the 60's, 70's came around and minorities said fuck that, we're proud of who we are, and we need some sort of authority over are lives and what we should be called viewed as.

So since the lives of many minorities are still not on the level of whites, and because of pride of their Ancestry you have a qualifier in front of the American title when ever a non-white minority is brought up.

well that's usually because we are talking to fellow AMERICANS, and know we are citizens of the same country, plus alot of whites you can't tell the difference between them nowadays, so we ask what are you?

"Oh, I'm German-Italian",

"I'm Russian and Scandinavian",

"I'm Jewish", etc.

The hyphenated-American, I can see the pros and cons of it. People that want to know what you are, if you happen to be an American citizen but have signs that you're background is from somewhere other than Britain, you don't want to just say German, cause then it makes you sound like you're a German citizen. So they say say German-American, using the first part to denote their ethnicity, and the second part to denote their nationality and for some, their loyalty.

To others it sounds like your putting your families nationality ahead of your own.

"What are you" is a pretty common question, but phrased very poorly. If you think about it, and is probably what created the whole hyphenated issue in the first place.

As more people have mixed kids, it seems like the hyphenated thing is becoming less common.
