Let Me In
I am conflicted about this movie. On one hand I feel like this is probably the best we can expect from an adapted foreign film for American audiences. On the other hand I feel they made changes that really weren’t needed and in doing so changed the nature of the movie entirely.
I feel like there was un-needed gore added in an attempt to make this more of a horror movie. I felt they undermined the film by focusing too much on the horror aspect instead of the friendship/romance between the main characters. I think the young male character suffered specifically from this. In the Sweedish film his life was explored much more thoroughly and developed to the point where we could understand why his relationship with the girl became so important.
I expected Chloë Moretz (the girl) to shine in this, but was let down. I think this is because she wasn’t really given any room to do much with the character. Instead I thought Kodi Smit-McPhee (the boy) exceeded my expectations and did a lot with the character despite it being chopped down in the Americanized version.
I have a hard time recommending this movie because I think it deviated so much from the original and became something entirely different. Something different that, to me, wasn’t appealing. But, if for some reason you can’t stand foreign subtitled movies I’d say check this out. But if you don’t mind the subtitles I would say watch the original.
