for the price of a nice stock mac computer.. i could build a mega fuckin machine.. with a terrabyte of space or more.. 4-6 gigs of ram.. new nvidia video card, 22 inch widescreen monitor, AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.0GHz dual core status. It would be like the speed of 5 mac computers combined.
you dont need all shit in a mac, thats why it doesnt come with it. plus, that pc you build will crap out in 3 years while a mac will never fuckin die.

I've built several pc's and none of them have ever died. Macs aren't immune to wear & tear btw. As a matter of fact, we had picked 3 G5 machines and 2 of them crashed on their very first boot. These were, of course, brand new straight out of the box. Even with all the newest updates, they still occasionally crash. Our pc workstations running Windows XP have never crashed.

Just proves the point that you can't believe the hype (especially from people who don't know what they're talking about), and take everything with a grain of salt.

it depends on what its used for?

if you want to record directly into your comp through preamp/soundcard etc
if you use cpu hungry vts's
what sample rate and bitdepth you want to record at
etc etc

i brought my pc based comp for £560, i have 2 gig ram, about 600gig sata (3 gig p/s) + worth of space, i normalized a 3 hour wave in minutes the otherday

here is a pic of it running
http://a90.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/4/l_a81dcebc8468b8f4e2ad9b40060c72b1.jpg

i have samples and temp files on a different drives to the operating system
and the extra drives are partitioned.

I got both Mac and PC, but I prefer my PC (ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard, 3.2 GHz P4, 2 GB RAM, Win XP Pro. Gina 3G and RME Multiface II audio cards) which is running Sonar and Sampletude... I got a gang of UA plugins (which I prefer over the Protools Bombfactoy's bootleg versions of the 1176 and LA2A) on 2 UDA-1 Cards. I also have the TDM equivalent of Oxford plug-ins thanks to the TC PowerCore firewire unit that holds 4 DSP cards... so that makes a total of 6 DSP cards... If I was to have all that power in a TDM system I'd be flat broke and most of the UA plugins I use aren't available on TDM anyway... but I'm going to attempt to install some UAD-1 cards on the PT LE system on my Mac for kicks...

Oh, and just so none of y'all think I'm plug in crazy, I have some external outboard compressors, aural exciter, vocoder and reverb units... I also go to my boy's house and use some of his analog outboard gear (like the 2-1176) to finish off certain mixes....

All in all, to each his own...

..

Uppin...Im about to upgrade and I would like to see some more opinions. I have never used a Mac, but from what I understand, you dont need amazing specs on a mac to do the same thing on a PC. Any comparisons with specs?

I honestly was thinking about the 24in Imac to run an 003 with PT, just because I dont have enough to drop on a middle class mac pro.

I also want to do light weight video editing in the future.

Yo Man I was wondering If I should get a new computer or will the commodore 64 be sufficient to record and mix songs with about 128 tracks with ssl plug ins running on 24 of them?..
Yes the 64 will be sufficient, and from what I've seen with my own eyes you should be able to run 256 tracks @ 48 bit/999khz resoultion.

On top of the that, it mixes the music for you, so you never have to worry about a bass heavy mix.
