One of my biggest struggles when I design educational programs is to ensure that the instructors are culturally competent. The demographics of the youth I work with are 99.9% Mexican and Black between the ages of 18-24. They are mostly California Youth Authority babies, the others are on probation or parole. Bloods, Crips, Logan , Market, etc. Not only do I have to ensure that the teachers can get them through the curriculum but the employers have to be willing to hire them. Recently, 21 of these youth completed a NABCEP solar program, installed solar on a home, and are now working at a 240 hour internship at $10 an hour where they will be hired at $17 an hour if they show up to work and work hard. All of these youth are from different gangs. If I saw one of my educator’s show any form of ideologies like the author did he/she would be fired. My case managers are men, Black and Mexican men who come from the community and have overcome the nonsense around them. The instructors are mostly white because I am dedicated to training and placing Blacks and Mexicans in careers of the future that earn a decent wage like solar, wind, biofuel, and wastewater treatment. Out of 21 youth who started our first cycle (we are in our fifth now) 100% completed and attended every day. You should see when these kids trip the white teacher up in complex math problems and show the teacher where he fucked up . Some of them are so far behind we have to pull them. The first time I saw a blood tutoring five other crips and bloods after class it sent chills down my spine. No one told them to do that but they bought into the process.
wow that is pretty awesome. good shit. better story than the whole white girls sucking your mans dick one

LOL I wrote that because the author stated that all of the white girls were running from the horny black men. I'm not mad at them though, in high school more white girls were comfortable experimenting sexually than we were.

there's no point in trying to convince white people about the black/minority experience, white privilege, so on... they are too caught up in the system in where they fit in, just like us, if they weren't we would have been in a class struggle years ago instead of talking about race problems.

Wait, so you can speak on being white because you are? Or you just know more about us than we do? Yea, you can't really get us to FULLY understand the minority experience, because we haven't been in those shoes...but you can't understand the white experience either, if you aren't white. I'm white, and I can't understand the "white" experience myself, because there are different types of white people. I can't relate to, or understand, a redneck. I can't relate to, or understand, a socialite. I can't relate to pro-white folks that spread hatred, either. I can relate to an Italian...I can relate to an Irish person...but I can't relate to the French or the English, or the Spanish. Different experiences, different social views, different understanding of the world, and different opportunities based on background and location.

The people that are too caught up in the system are the people that run with the system, period. Just because a person is white, doesn't mean they fit in with the plan.

uh, yes it does, because you aren't in control of the system, the system controls you. The muthafuckas who try to differ from it either end up ded or in jail and thats just the prison industrial complex, another machination of the system.

This isn't fascism or some shit that's out there blatantly this shit is subtle and all around us. That's why I don't even like to debate this shit because you have to be studied on a multitude of shit to even comprehend the forces at play and power, and when you do your mind will be blown.

No one said anything about speaking on whites either, I just said it's no point in trying to educate whites on black and minority problems in a white dominated society, and you and others are proving that in spite of some good history and facts being presented to you.

i think its up to whites to educate themselves on that type of thing (if they care.). there were many white people in my african studies class in college, and i thought that was beautiful.

but all in all i think alot of it comes from experience. the most racist shit ive heard really just came more from ignorance than a deep bred hatred for a group.

the dude at my work was joking about how the border patrol outside was shooting mexicans....i laughed but not too much..he asked me if 'i saw them'.....i mean...at this point in life im trained to not take offense to that.

dude isnt from SD so i wont fault him on the jokes, he dosent know this close to the border those are sensitive issues...and at work its not really cool to be jokin like that..but whatever hes my higher up right? i cant fire him or tell on em. if i said the shit bet id be gone by 2 weeks.

thats the wack part about racism overall, playing in the playing field because you cant do shit about it. If you didnt youd have a way bigger chance of failing. the jokes are common and theres more jokers than soldiers in this world.

there just needs to be people who instruct these kids better..in a 2009 way..without using rap music to educate them...if that many people looked up to tupac i would love to one day see a teacher looked up to like that without being under the disguise of a rapper.

a little white girl told my mixed cousin (black/white) that she couldnt play with her because she was black (shes alicia keys color). she went home crying to her mother (white) and wanted an explanation.

i just think its pretty fucked up it starts that early. and this happened in 2008.

we all hope that small things like that dont set a seed of hate. but the reality is that shit starts hella early.

i wouldnt know how to change it....youd damn near have to have amish kids that were just sheltered as hell.

You're saying all white people are privileged. How can you say that if you've never been white? Yes, back with slavery, and later with segregation, white people were "privileged". But in 2009, c'mon. I'm having a hard time with my life like the next man. There are no doors swinging open for me, that aren't swinging open for you. If there was, I wouldn't be in the fucked up position that I'm in. That's real. Can you give me an example of this "privilege"? I'm seriously curious.

Not once have I denied the history or the facts, but to group people together by skin color is just ridiculous and ignorant. I'm perfectly AWARE of minority issues...I don't need to be educated on them. Just because, as a white cat, I will never FULLY UNDERSTAND, does not mean I don't know what's been going on in this country. I despise what this country was built on, and I will never understand why my own family decided to move here in the beginning of the 20th century. The only thing I've stated (and I don't stand alone on this one) is that people can control their lives. If you're in a bad situation, you can get yourself out of it. It might be extremely difficult for some, but it's not impossible.

It doesn't matter WHAT one decides to do. Anybody can be an athlete, an entertainer, a scientist, a business owner, etc. Success lies in what you do and how you do it, regardless of occupation. If you have a plan, you can run with it. If people allow themselves to be sucked into the "norm", they'll remain a victim of "the plan". Folks just need to not roll over and die, and take control of their lives...regardless of race or injustices...keep on truckin'.

EXACTLY! I like going out and learning about different people, and reading up on [real] history, and present situations. I think the best class I took in Junior College was cultural anthropology...definitely worth the time and money.

Most racists are racist because they don't know any better. They grow up learning one thing, and rarely stray away from that for a better understanding of the world. People are content in their shells, and that's where we fuck up as a whole.

If the government wants to make a difference, why not create some sort of "Cultural Appreciation Day"? That would be a big hit right here in Cali, thanks to the diversity. But seriously, have speakers...speakers that are not one sided with their racial views...speakers that can drop knowledge on EVERYBODY, and not just one race. And, to make it better, have it be an open discussion between the audience and the speakers. Then real issues can be addressed and we can begin the process of healing. It will take a long time, but we have to start somewhere.

I know, it's a big dream...but maybe one day it will happen.

lol youre having fun arent you shea? the particular discussion (atleast mine, within the last 3-5 minutes) was me asking if blacks should learn white history/sociology/psychology etc etc? so being different IS part of it right, since thats the reason one would educate themselves on another culture/race...?

im just clarifying..cuz im confused now..lol

i dont think data is a end all answer, it just educates you on the issue.
