What is the purpose of life? Is it to have a successful career or raise children or travel the world or experience as many different things as you can or have as much fun as possible?
The purpose of life is none of these things you mention. The purpose of life means first understanding what is self. Anyone can understand, "Once I had child's body. Now I have adult body. The body has changed, but I am the same entity. Therefore I am different from the body." Furthermore, since the body goes through changes and eventually vanishes, that which does not change does not vanish and is everlasting. This comes to the concept of the eternal soul. The second stage is understanding what, as eternal beings, is our eternal occupation. In material life we may change our occupations all the time, but what is it that we must do no matter what. In Sanskrit this is called Dharma. Dharma roughly means, "that which one cannot give up". For example, as long as there is fire, there is heat. So one could say that heat is the dharma of fire. The dharma of the soul is the capacity to render service. In all of our activities, we are rendering some amount of service to friends, family, strangers, enemies, pets, our senses, etc. So the idea is to understand how to render service to that which is eternal. We, as eternal beings, are eternally part and parcel of the Supreme Absolute Truth (aka God). So the purpose of life is to render service to God. This is called Sanatana Dharma. In general we can say that life is meant for understanding the self, Superself (God) and the relationship between the two.

There is obviously no right or wrong answer.
I see you are playing it safe. Have you considered that there might be a right answer? Certainly, truth is objective.

I just see people taking certain paths or people defining their life by petty things. And especially my father, literally all he does is work eat & sleep, he rarely ever goes anywhere besides work and home. And to me that's like a waste of life.
Yes. Most people are only interested in four things: eating, sleeping, mating and defending. This is animal life. Human life is distinguished by our capacity to understand the self, the Absolute and the relationship between the two. Some people say that there is no Absolute, or they say that we have no such relationship. In this way, less intelligent men can negate any sense of responsibility and can continue enjoying their material senses into oblivion. You are right. This is a waste of life.
