But there are still some fundamental differences in their experiences based on nothing more than where they live. A black man in California more than likely lives around and therefore interacts frequently with Mexicans (hell, Compton & Inglewood have more Latinos than blacks). A Black man in the South is more likely to go about his daily business interacting almost exclusively with blacks.
There are very smart people who study this shit everyday, they've got a whole gang of statistics that they use to try and understand people's experiences. And no, the Census does not miss minorities, they do a remarkable job. Here are some more statistical sources:
