I remember hearing that Jim Plunkett was half Mexican and half Native American. I could be wrong, but I remember hearing that around 1983 after the Raiders beat the Redskins in the Super Bowl.

Romo's from Wisconsin, but a lot of the athletes coming out of California are mixed, you really notice it when you're watching Pac-10 hoops b/c the black dudes are noticeably lighter than they are in the Big Ten, Big East, ACC & SEC conferences b/c there's a lot more racial ambiguity out here on the West Coast than there is back East. Anybody else notice this when they watch Pac-10 hoops???

Everybody's forgetting about Seneca Wallace, that guy is going to be starting for some team other than the Seattle Seahawks in 2-3 years, and he'll be more ready than a lot of the people named (like Jason Campbell????) once he gets his chance somewhere. People talk about his legs, but really what I was most impressed with when he played earlier this year was his arm, he's got a stronger arm than Hasselbeck. He throws fuckin beebees.

That's not always the case... fools get recruited from all over the country... Just because someone plays in the Pac-10 doesn't mean they're from the West Coast... Joakim Noah (who looks damn near white) is from back east (New York) and plays in the SEC... California doesn't have a monopoly on 'racial ambiguity'... It happens all over...

Never....lol

Puerto Rican maybe.

Football is way bigger in Mexico than it is in Puerto Rico (basketball is the biggest sport)........for players born here, I would say it is the same.

True California doesn't have a monopoly on racial ambiguity.

And true the Pac-10 does have a sizable amount of players from the Midwest, East & South, just like some of those other conferences have guys from the West. But by and large, the vast majority of the hoopers in the Pac-10 come from out West (mostly California) while the vast majority of hoopers in those other conferences do not come from out West.

There are exceptions of course, but I am pretty sure that for whatever reason (probably simple demographic factors) that folks who consider themselves "African American" out West are lighter than those in the East/South. One of the places you see that reflected is in Pac-10 hoops. Does it matter? Of course not, it's just something I'm always noticing, I'm just seeing if anybody else has done the same.

Latest examples: The Lopez Twins from Stanford. Those guys can flat out play too, they impressed me last night.

I don't think "African Americans" out West are any lighter than "African Americans" anywhere else... Why would they be? That's like saying White guys from Florida have better tans than White guys from California... And one of the places it's reflected is in beach volleyball... By the way I HATE STANFORD... I'm a Bruins/Aztec fan... Yeah...

Simple: Because black people out West are exposed to other racial groups, (especially the white & latino populations that will make their kids lighter if they fuck), more frequently than they are in the Midwest, South, East.

There are a number of statistics urban geographers use to quantify this idea. The most common of these is known as the Index of Dissimilarity. It is defined as "the percentage of two population groups that would be forced to move to give every geographic unit a share of each group that is equal to their share of the entire area."

The University of Michigan Population Studies Center has an awesome database that is easy to use, you should check it out, there is excellent data and some very fascinating stuff. Generally, 0-40 is considered low, 40-60 moderate and 60-100 high.

Here's why skin-tone is definitely going to vary by region w/in the Afro-American Population:

Phoenix black-white = 48.5
Seattle black-white = 53.4
Portland black-white = 58.2
San Diego black-white = 58.1
San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose black-white = 65.4
Los Angeles black-white = 66.3

vs.

Chicago black-white = 81.4
Milwaukee black-white = 80.1
Detroit black-white = 84.7
Cleveland black-white = 77.8
New Orleans black-white = 72.1
Philadelphia black-white = 75.8

Does it matter, of course not. Just something that I have definitely noticed with my own eyes that is supported on paper.

@XPanther--I noticed you be tryna come wit alot of knowledge all the time, but sometimes you just don't be makin no sense.
California/West Coast got a lot of dark, black ass mufuckas. East Coast don't got darker blacks than the West Coast. It's lots of dark and light blacks in the Midwest. It's all the same, it's in the genes. Or If anything the sun be bakin way harder in the South or West Coast.
And it's mixed race children everywhere in the USA. Where I'm at in the Midwest, hella black mufuckas be havin kids by white women, mexicans, laotians, puerto ricans, whatever they get they hands on.

You are good at this spread sheet shit, I'll give you that... But I'ma have to ride with N.Ill-state on this one... It just doesn't make sense... so what if West Coast Blacks, Whites, and Latinos, are exposed to each other (that doesn't mean they're fucking)... I assume the same could be said of places like Miami & New York... I've never heard of the 'Index of Dissimilarity' it's a new one for me... I'll have to check it out to see if it holds any weight... interesting post though...

Absolutely, I don't doubt that at all, of course there are black men dating all races in all cities. But it doesn't work to use only your experiences because the world is soooo fuckin huge, that's why having some comprehensive dataset to try and capture the millions of people we never will see with your own eyes.

I guarantee you, a greater percentage of the black men in SF/LA/SD are having kids w/ non-black women then the black men in Chicago. And therefore, I would guess that the average black guy in Chicago is slightly darker than the average black guy in LA.

And on the skin tone thing, it was my impression that sun exposure wasn't a factor b/c it doesn't alter genetics. I always thought of it as a temporary deal. I know that it's not just white folks who are affected by sun exposure, but I don't think sun exposure has anything to do w/ this, I always thought it's simply how much white/mexican/light-skinned Asian ancestry a black guy has.

I'm not a geneticist, and I'm also guilty for this huge tangent, I do that a lot. I still believe firmly my point, however, and I do think it's revealed somewhat watching college basketball in the various conferences across America.
