Why do you think movies always throw a love story into EVERY movie? There is a reason for that. We like to get attached to things, to understand people, to LIVE through people, and to feel emotion. Why do people spite a sports star for leaving their team? Because we form a sort of "bond" with them, and we feel betrayed when they decide to play for another team. Thats how we are wired.
