Despite three fighters on card, trainer Cesar Gracie won't be at UFC 129
Nate Diaz isn’t the only Cesar Gracie Fight Team member who's had a tough time getting into Canada.
In fact, the team's namesake said he ran into red tape and won't be attending UFC 129 this Saturday in Toronto.
"I don't have the American passport thing going – I have the whole Brazilian thing, and I had issues getting a visa over there," Cesar Gracie today told MMAjunkie.com Radio (
www.mmajunkie.com/radio). "I'm going to watch like you guys on TV."
Three of Gracie's students are fighting at the sold-out pay-per-view event: Jake Shields attempts to unseat welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre in the headliner, Diaz meets young prospect Rory MacDonald on the Spike-TV-televised preliminary card, and Daniel Roberts tussles with Claude Patrick in a preliminary-card bout streamed live on Facebook.
Of course, the team will have a presence in Toronto with a few notable emissaries, including one you'd think might have an even tougher time at the border.
"Nick Diaz is heading out there, and that should be good – or bad, I don’t know," joked Gracie, whose team has become one of the most prominent in MMA. "Gilbert Melendez is going out there too."
This past month, Nate Diaz drew speculation that he might not be able to fight at UFC 129 when he penned a Twitter message that hinted at border-crossing troubles.
"Can someone tell Canada to quit trippin and let me up in there I'm tryin to get paid," Diaz wrote.
Gracie subsequently told MMAjunkie.com that a disturbing-the-peace charge stemming from an altercation with a bouncer five years ago in Reno, Nev., prompted the UFC to request that Diaz fill out a declaration of his intent to travel into the country.
The welterweight is now all-systems-go for the fight with MacDonald.
Gracie, who is featured heavily on the "UFC Primetime" series profiling St-Pierre vs. Shields, did not say whether his situation mirrored the younger Diaz's issue but said his border-crossing problems had surfaced before.
"When my cousin
Ralph (Gracie) fought there a long time ago, I got in a little issue," he said. "I was supposed to go up there, and we sent Nino Schembri instead because I couldn’t get into the country."
So for now, it looks like the trainer's support will be moral.
