UFC newcomer Todd Brown replaces Thiago Silva at UFC 117, meets Tim Boetsch

UFC newcomer Todd "Bulldog" Brown (15-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) has replaced injured Thiago Silva (14-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) and now meets Tim Boetsch (11-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) at UFC 117.

Earlier today MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) reported that a back injury had forced Silva off the upcoming card.

In his place steps Brown, who according to agent Ken Pavia of MMAAgents.com, recently finalized a four-fight deal with the promotion.

UFC 117 takes place Aug. 7 at Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif., and features a headliner between middleweight champion Anderson Silva and challenger Chael Sonnen. Boetsch vs. Silva is slated for the night's un-aired preliminary card.

"Todd Brown personifies grassroots MMA," Pavia said. "He spent a lifetime training young talent and winning in small shows. He's been waiting for this opportunity. When the call came, he couldn't say yes fast enough."

According to most databases, Brown owns an 11-1 record. However, Pavia said some of the fighter's smaller bouts are in the process of being added and that Brown will enter the UFC with a 15-1 mark. The Indianapolis-based fighter, who's ended nearly all his fights via submission or knockout, suffered his only career loss in 2007, when he dropped a decision to Josh Hendricks, who made his UFC debut just months later.

Boetsch, meanwhile, returns to the UFC after a 2-2 run in the promotion. The Midwesterner wowed audiences in his octagon debut when he tossed David Heath to the mat en route to a TKO win at UFC 81. He then dropped a TKO to Matt Hamill before rebounding with a knockout of Michael Patt. However, after a unanimous-decision loss to Jason Brilz, the promotion gave him his walking papers. Many fans felt the pink slip was harsh and lobbied for his return. He recently got it after a 3-0 run in outside promotions.

a part of me honestly thinks silva wants out of his contract.. & heres why!!

in early 2008 he expressed the desire to box roy jones jr--- dana white forbid that from happening. if you are signed to UFC, you are owned by UFC, & only compete for the UFC.

i think his performances since then have possibly been a subtle attempt to excape this slavery..

we'll find out for sure when he faces sonnen. personally i dont think sonnen's pro-wrestling promo ass can beat anderson.

Pierre, I think belfort would smash him, every1 wants 2 see gsp and silva tho, two top fighters in their prime on top of their game, could very well be silvas retirement fight, think of how much both fighters would make, it'll be record setting

Dana White confirms UFC 117's Jon Fitch vs. Thiago Alves winner gets title shot

SAN FRANCISCO – The winner of Saturday's UFC 117 co-main event between Jon Fitch (22-3 MMA, 12-1 UFC) and Thiago Alves (16-6 MMA, 9-3 MMA) will, in fact, get a shot at the title.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the expected plans during today's pre-UFC 117 press conference at the Hilton San Francisco Fisherman's Wharf hotel in California.

The winner will be in line after Josh Koscheck, who meets current champ and "The Ultimate Fighter 12" rival coach Georges St-Pierre at a tentatively planned Dec 11 UFC 124 event.

UFC 117 takes place at Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif., and the night's main card airs on pay-per-view.

The Fitch vs. Alves fight technically is a rematch of their 2006 meeting at UFC Fight Night 5, which Fitch won via second-round TKO. Since then, Alves is 7-1, and the lone came to champ St-Pierre at UFC 100, his most recent bout. Fitch is 9-1 since that fight, and his lone loss also came to St-Pierre, at UFC 87.

They initially were scheduled to rematch at UFC 107 and then against at UFC 111 this past March, but the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board suspended Alves just two days before the planned bout due to a failed CT scan. Following the assessment, Alves underwent an MRI and an angiogram (an X-ray of blood vessels) in order to be cleared. Even the latest meeting seemed in jeopardy after reports surfaces of Alves' supposed inability to cut weight. However, his manager today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that Alves weighs 177 pounds, is in good spirits, and will be on weight come Friday's weigh-ins.

Despite the delays, both fighters want a second shot at the belt. However, if Koscheck upsets St-Pierre, that'll force Fitch to fight his American Kickboxing Academy teammate – something he previously said he won't do – for the belt.

"He'll fight Koscheck," White flatly said today.

Fitch, though, said he's not looking past Alves and will address a possible fight with Koscheck once UFC 117 is over.

Chael Sonnen Denies Lance Armstrong Comments LOL

Chael Sonnen made some comments to Larry Pepe of Pro MMA Radio about Lance Armstrong earlier in the week that had everyone shaking their collective heads. At the 3:25 mark.

"When you screw up, you have to own it. That stuff really gets under my skin. Take Lance Armstrong. Lance Armstrong did a number of things and he gave himself cancer. He cheated, he did drugs, and he gave himself cancer,"..."Well, instead of saying ‘Hey listen, I cheated and gave myself cancer, don't be like me.' He actually made himself the victim and then went out and profited something like $15 million dollars from this ‘Hey, poor me, let's find a cure for cancer' campaign instead of just coming clean and saying, 'Look, here's what I did, I screwed myself up, and I hope people learn from my mistakes.' You just watch these guys and can't help but think, God, what a fraud."

Now Sonnen does an interview with Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting where he denies the interview ever taking place. At the 4:20 mark.

Below, Larry Pepe of Pro MMA Radio talks about the interview that Sonnen alleges never happened.
