I no longer by anything but solo albums approved by the artist, or stuff from a record label that has a good reputation (ie Done Deal / Deal Done Ent., Million Dollar Dream, etc).

Mixtapes = waste of money. Recycled beats, recycled songs, guys yelling over tracks, bad quality.
Collabos = waste of money. Thrown together too quickly, mediocre beats, mediocre effort, easy shot at a quick buck rather than quality music. Occasionally you hear a good collabo, but as a consumer you are only buying X number of CDs, why take the risk on a collabo if you can get a sure thing with a solo album from a good artist?
Albums not approved by artist = waste of money, for obvious reasons.

I do not buy albums even from many of my favorite artists because they are thrown together to make a quick buck. I only spend $$$ on release I feel has been put together with effort and time to perfect the sound. Like Gas says good packaging helps. Make it look like its worth the time.

I think the problem with Hip Hop is rappers feel entitled to sales rather than putting in good effort. Chances are the download aint killin your game its that you dropped 3 albums in a year and they're all 2/5.

That's wussup. And that's a pretty tight album. Would you say you bought it more because you enjoy having the actual cover art and unwrapping a cd, or because you respect the artist(s) involved and would like to support what they're doing?
the thing is, that I support artists who make good music (most of them newcomers) and the only place i get my music from is the siccshop (props to Coop and Nemo).
i have ordered 3 times cds from myspace pages but never received one cd and that fucked up.

I don't download albums. I'd rather support the artist so that they continue to make the music I like. Most of the rappers I like have consistently made the kind of music I enjoy. Besides, I can usually find $10 or less to spend on the album. I feel sorry for the people that can't and have to download.

so do artists buy others music aswell or do they be rippin the shit off the comp also? if you an artist speak up, this question shouldnt be directed to the average joe who should be supporting every artist out there. Me? I havent ripped in a long time due to havin a tape player in my ride LOL, but i would if its free on the net! unless i actually know the fool then i would buy it to support them!.. or for those street hustlers outside sellin cd's in the parkin lot tryin to come up.. yeah ill buy those. but other than that I would download.

in 07, i bought the Little Brother's (Get Back) and Whoridaz (Whoridin) << pretty old 96-97

this year i bought Lupe Fiasco's - The Cool and EMC's - the Show

I dont trust too many artists any more. I dont like being surprised with garbage. I'll buy it if its good music, i dont care if your from Iowa. If ur nice ur nice. That is definitely a problem these days. People concentrate too much on where ur from and street cred.

Very good advice for consumers and artists alike. youre pretty much right on. most mixtape ARE bad quality. most collab albums ARE a couple niggaz gettin together so they can slap a project together real quick and make some cheez. i want you particularly to know that kokane and i spent countless hours and poured lots of soul into this album. we were done recording months ago and have just been playin it makin sure everything feels right before it comes out. we aint rush it at all...

Just talkin bout bank on the Whoridaz cd was a classic. I dont know how they didnt make it...

n I personally haven't really fell in love with Lupe's music yet, but you gotta respect the intricacy and thought he puts into his songs, so thats a good buy if you like his style of rap.

thanks homie. god bless u. i think the album sounds best as a whole. its a real project! but whats gonna do it for me as far as proving my ability to make dope music is after the album drops when people start saying i cant make a tight album without kokane (cuz i know they will). thats when ima come thru with a bangin ass solo album thats just as tight. i just laid my whole teeny gameplan out for you. now hopefully i can make it all come to life.

I stopped buying rap albums because motherfuckers are getting janky with the release dates and coming soons and shit. At least R&B shit comes out when it's supposed to.
damn... good point. i think cuz the process of marketing and building a buzz with rap is different than r&b. with rap, you gotta create this feverish buzz and then drop in a 2 second window when its hot. r&b has a much larger window because of the nature of the music and the type of consumer. they don't love the song one minute and then hate it the next day. and they actually BUY music, much more than rap fans. rap fans probably have the largest percentage of downloaders per genre.

last album i bought was jaheim... if im a big fan i gotta have that artwork it looks better in my cd rack instead of a bunch of cd's on a spindle...
me too coop...

and when you BUY a cd, even they way you listen to it is much different because you paid for it. you actually take a the time and care in your listening process (hoping that u got your moneys worth). when you get a bootleg, if you dont like the first 2 tracks you might toss it, right? but sometimes you need to hear an album or song a couple times and it will grow on you. a purchased cd will more than likely get that second chance, where a bootleg may not. i know i've gotten a burnt cd before and tossed it, only to discover later that it was actually a cool album. when you put your money on something, you're gonna care more. so maybe it's not just artists that don't care anymore, it's listeners too.

SO WHO MAKES THE FIRST MOVE??

WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE IN ORDER TO GET LISTENERS TO CARE ABOUT NEW MUSIC AGAIN ASIDE FROM THE FEW ARTISTS THEY ALREADY SUPPORT?

a good question could be:

WHERE DOES YOUR LISTENING PROCESS START? WHERE DO YOU FIRST DISCOVER NEW ARTISTS MUSIC TO GET YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION? MYSPACE? MIXTAPES?

WOULD YOU ATTEND AN ARTISTS SHOW THAT YOU'VE NEVER HEARD OF? OR HEARD OF BUT NEVER HEARD THE MUSIC?

I spend too much money on music if you consider the quality...I'm a collector though, but have also given up on some artists I used to buy every release from.

I'm still addicted to the feeling you have when you come home with a new CD, open it up, put it in your system and bump the music while checkin out the booklet. Kinda like the feeling some fat peeps get when they go to McDonalds I guess lol

I mostly only download shit I never heard before, or shit that is out of print.
