I like my M-Audio Fast Track Pro. $200 new. 2 XLR/TRS combo inputs, 2 balanced 1/4" TRS outputs, 4 unbalanced RCA outputs, 1/4" TRS insert jacks, MIDI I/O, S/PDIF I/O, headphones jack, and its bus-powered. Works with everything. Haven't had a complaint about it since I got it (6 months ago).

I'm sure someone else may be able to recommend something better than this though.

mbox mini $250 and you get pro tools
That's on plus to buying an Mbox, you get Pro Tools with it. But if he's not using Pro Tools at all for less money than the Mbox Mini, the Fast Track Pro (and some other interfaces out there) come with more than the Mbox Mini provides; i.e. MIDI I/O, S/PDIF, and more XLR/TRS I/O's. 1 XLR & 2 TRS inputs and 2 TRS outputs on the Mbox, compared to the specs that I listed on the Fast Track Pro for less money sounds much better. The extra $250 for Pro Tools M-Powered later on down the road will be worth it in my opinion.

The Revolution seems more like something you'd buy for playback purposes, although there are two inputs on it, you'd need an external mic preamp unless you're using a self-powered mic. If you want to go M-Audio PCI, I'd go with the Delta 1010LT since you have two mic preamps on it.

But as far as Pro Tools M-Powered, I like it. Its pretty much Pro Tools LE with a few limitations.

Sounds good for what I'm doing (recording from my MPC and recording vocals into Pro Tools, Sonar & Cubase). I also use it for normal playback (CD's, DVD's, WMP). And yes, you can use it with a laptop, which is how I have mine setup.

I have everything running into a Mackie mixer, then the mixer into the Fast Track. You can run a mic or instruments directly into it though as well.

i had a fast track pro and loved it, esp. for laptop use, but i kept having to reload the drivers because it would just randomly fuck up. i eventually just gave it to a friend of mine who needed it, and he's been getting good use out of it. that was over a year ago though so the driver issue may very well be fixed by now.
