I have been reading alot of things in here and I had a little time this morning with nothing to do so I thought I would post some thoughts for those of you that care to read.
1994 is when I became a Tech N9ne fan, I am Kansas City bred, but I have been all over this country and even though the beats and sound were similar to other things I had heard, the cat had a flow and mic presence that were simply undeniable. When you look at the greats in the rap game and what sets them apart there is one common denominator. The sound of their voice. Tech had an unmistakable unique voice and delivery. You would never confuse him with anyone else. When you hear EM, you know, when you hear Pac, you know, and so on and so forth. There has been an issue that has been debated amongst Tech N9ne fans since the beginning.
Tech's content.
As early as 95-96 I heard people complaining about his content. All I can really say to that is that you really have to know and have an appreciation for the man, and where his music really comes from.
The people that like his dark side don't like the light side, and vice versa, the people who loved anghellic hated killer, the people that love solo albums hate the collabo albums, the people that love the features like scarface, hate when Tech does songs with groups like twizted.
The cat really does write his life and because of that he is versatile. I honestly believe that if Tech spent the next 6 months in mexico that half the next album would be in spanish. Now we can either love that or hate it but it would be his most recent experience and would probably fill the pages of his notebook. I think the reason we all have so much to debate about him as an artist is because everytime he tries to please one group of us, he pisses the other group off.
Case in point: The guy that does video reviews that Killer sucked and didn't know who Shawnna or Scarface was. He kept saying that Tech needed to go back to doing his "Sick" shit. He was going back to doing his more "black" shit. Then he did K.O.D. and that guy gave it a great review. Some others hated it.
I remember when people were complaining that he wasn't giving Kansas City and its local artists the shine it deserves, now for the last three years he has put out a collabos album that has given his comrades atleast a bit of national shine, that they might never get. I don't think that anyone expects the guys that feature on collabos albums to give the quality of verses you would get from guys that charge 10K a verse, and it is what it is. If you want to question the quality of Tech's verses well that is just opinion, the guy has wrote alot and worked as hard as ANYONE in hip hop for the last 10 years and his verses are generally as complex as you will find.
Tech has set the bar high, and it is tough to please everyone, including himself. I take the albums for what they are, some a little different and some extremely different. Since of alot of you don't like this album I am sure XXL will love it.
So someone is pleased.
