To Kidd, or not to Kidd

Jason Kidd's latest recent trade request is (once again) a hot topic around the league, and in the Blazers Forum.

The future Hall of Famer and nine-time NBA All-Star could push a team that's on the cusp of contention to a real contender. But as bad as he wants out, it won't be easy to move him. There are playoff teams out there in need of a triple-double machine at PG: Dallas, Cleveland, Denver. But is Portland one of those teams? Somehow, whenever Kidd starts to get that wandering eye, the Blazers come up. And according to Fred Kerber of the NY Post, the Blazers are in the mix, again:

The Nets want Kidd in the West - his choice earlier this season was Dallas. The teams figuring to bid heavily are Dallas, Denver and Portland.
Portland shouldn't be on that list.

Dave D'Alessandro, who covers the Nets for the Newark Star-Ledger, lists "Dallas, Cleveland and Denver as the most likely suitors for Kidd." And also points out how hard it will be to move Kidd, thanks to his large contract ($21M next year alone). Another reason Portland should not be on that list.

The Blazers currently have a pair of bloated contracts (Miles, LaFrentz) and unless the Nets would be will to take on either (doubtful), a trade wouldn't work from a numbers standpoint.

But it's not just the numbers that toss a Kidd trade away for Portland, it's (as Jason Quick's Sunday story points out) a chemistry thing. This is a strong trait for this team. You could go back and forth for hours about the possible benefits outweighing the costs of adding Kidd to Portland. The Blazers would most likely have to give up a chunk of their core (some combination of Jarrett Jack, Martell Webster, Sergio Rodriguez, or possibly Travis Outlaw) to get Kidd in return. Kevin Pritchard would have to mortgage some of the future and hope for immediate returns. And the way this team has meshed, and the way Pritchard and Nate McMillan have hand-picked the roster, I really doubt it would happen.

Here some thoughts from the forum:

RoyIsROY:

Kidd and chemistry. What does getting an older superstar-type player like Jason Kidd do the chemistry of this team? Especially considering that Jarrett Jack, whom the whole team seems to adore, would likely be included in any deal for Kidd.

Maybe we SHOULD just stay with this team, let the chips fall where they may.

TowelBoy12:

Kidd isn't really a me-first super star. I don't think he would hurt the chemistry.

portlandfats:

jack almost seems like the heart and soul of this team. he fires up the guys on a nightly basis. dont trade him now! we have no clue what kind of affect it may have on the team.

VipaGTS:

Kidd is unselfish ...Smart...I think he and Roy would click right away.

I don't think the Blazers would make a move for Kidd and I don't think they should. It would involve giving up too much and possibly shake the balance this team has found. Were KP able to include Miles or LaFrentz, then I think you have to take a look at it.

I wonder what a conversation between Nets GM Rod Thorn and Jason Kidd would sound like. Luckily, Yahoo! Sports' Kelly Dwyer knows.

What do you think? Would the Blazers trade for Kidd? Should they? Who would you be willing to give up for Kidd? Do the Blazers need to make any moves? Did Kidd look better with his mustache? Sound off below.

Hmmm...I just heard a rumor about a deal that sends Kidd to Dallas, Stackhouse to NJ and Devin Harris to Portland. It didnt say what Portland would be giving up, but I like the idea of Devin Harris starting at pg for many years alongside Roy, Webster or Outlaw or Jones, Aldridge, and Oden.

we arent doing anything to fuck up the chemistry...
you wouldn't make a move for Devin Harris (within reason) if it was on the table? It would ruin the capspace plan (unless it was Miles going out in that deal), but chances are he's as good as anybody we could potentially sign in 09 anyway. Plus he is a little more seasoned at our weakest postition than anybody on the roster.

^^^I don't know, it was on ESPN and they didnt say who we would send out. They did say that the deal might be dead because Harris is injured though, but that doesn't make sense to me because he's out with a minor injury and he's only out for 2 weeks. I have a hard time saying who i would send out in that deal cause I like all of our rotation players, but I think i could let Blake and our first round pick and maybe a filler guy like Green without thinking twice about it.

man, i would love to have devin harris on our team, but same thing applies for him as kidd to me. IF it means ruining our CORE, and splitting them up, then im not FOR it at all, as this team chemistry is just too damn good to break up IMO.

The way it sounded, there were no core pieces leaving, and we should all already know that there's no way in hell Pritchard deals any of the core players, especially on the team that he built. It sounded like we would be basically getting Harris for what would amount to spare parts, and NJ and Dallas would have to have us involved to make the salaries work, NJ does it because they know they have to get rid of Kidd, Dallas does it because they want Kidd and we would have to get something of value to make it worth getting involved in the facilitation of the deal. It doesn't sound at all too unrealistic to me.
