Some things I've read recently on the trade deadline:

-The Giants contacted the Twins about Michael Cuddyer, who is a .300 hitter with 14 homeruns this season and about 31 years old. Cuddyer would be a nice fit at a corner outfielder, but the Twins are holding on to all of their players because they don't feel they are out of the race yet and think they are built to win next year.

-The price for Beltran would be 2-3 top prospects. At this point, the Giants are not willing to give up Gary Brown (OF) and/or Zach Wheeler. Brown is said to be a pro-bound .300 hitter with 40+ SB, Wheeler is a top 30 minor league prospect. It's been said the Giants "do not match up well" with a trade to the mets for Beltran because they do not have the right prospects. However, the Phillies who are also kicking the tires on Beltran have said they would not give up RF Dominic Brown, and also have said they would not give up top prospects for a rent-a-player. It's been said by two NL execs that the "attention" the Phillies and Red Sox are giving to Beltran is partly fabricated by the Mets in order to draw the Giants into a straight up trade for Gary Brown. Just as I was typing this its been noted the Braves have the farm system it takes to trade good prospects to get him, and they may now be a front runner.

Personally, I would rather see the Giants hold onto Brown and Wheeler, and a more pleasant trade for the Giants, believe it or not, would be Jonathan Sanchez and draft picks. At this point, I think it's pretty slim we'll land Beltran.

-One guy I haven't heard a lot about the Giants on is BJ Upton. He's said to be available, but I'm guessing the price is too high.

-Hunter Pence is also available but is the 'Stros franchcise player. They'd need to have a HUGE trade to let him go, the Giants have probably talked to them but aren't going to do it.

-Kemp and Eithier will both likely be in LA next year. The closest thing the Giants might get from LA is infielder Jamie Carroll.

-Reyes will be signed by the Mets.

-Orlando Hudson was also an option the Giants were pursuing, butthat's probably been shut down since we picked up Keppinger.

Other than that, its worth noting we're clearly buyers in this deadline, but we also don't want to give anything up. It's been pointed out that in 2012 or 2013, the Giants could have a completely homegrown lineup, younger than it is today and also packed with more speed: Belt (1B), Burriss (2B), Crawford (SS), Sandoval (3B), Brown (OF), Ford (OF), Schierholtz (OF), Posey (C). We all know a lot can happen until then, particularly with the success of Burriss and Crawford, but that could be a lineup with enough scrap to keep us going to the playoffs for years to come.

Giants GM Brian Sabean says that his list of untouchables list is different than public perception, tweets Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle. Schulman wonders aloud if this means that Zack Wheeler might not be an untouchable.

i'm kinda like fuck the future bro. we got a lot for a while. i know that doesn't make too much sense but it does. gary brown and wheeler would be sick sauce in like 4 years but if we can do everything to win another one right now i'm all for it. we gots money now. pullhoes next year and win it this year.

well for the future in SP we at least have Timmy, Cain, Bumgarner. They should be around for awhile barring major injury

Im hoping vogelsong gets a 2 year deal at least, and zitos gone in 2 years too right? so in that span we would hopefully develop 2 starting pitchers.

Sanchez will either be traded this year, or next year, i dont think he figures into long term plans.

and id rather have fielder over pujols lol.

Gary Brown though, imo is sounding like a must keep, Torres is old, Rowand is practically worthless, hes possibly the most important prospect to us.

Yahoo's Jeff Passan says (via Twitter) the Rangers are "coming hard" for Beltran, though San Francisco is still the frontrunner. Passan singles out Giants prospect Francisco Peguero as one name that may have been discussed.

FUCK YOU
Five scouts in town to watch Carlos Beltran; Giants the favorites?

According to FOXSports.com’s Jon Paul Morosi, the Braves, Giants, Phillies, Rangers and Red Sox have all had scouts watching Carlos Beltran this weekend as the Mets take on the Marlins.

They should be liking what they’re seeing. Beltran just drove in a run for the third straight game with a first-inning sac fly versus the Marlins. He also walked once Friday and three times Saturday. He entered Sunday’s game hitting .291/.393/.520 in 344 at-bats.

While the Giants and Phillies have been labeled as the favorites for Beltran by Jon Heyman, Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan says the Rangers are “coming hard.”

Passan, though, labels the Giants the front-runners and says outfielder Francisco Peguero could be part of a deal. The Giants are likely trying to get Beltran without losing either their No. 1 position prospect, Gary Brown, or their No. 1 pitching prospect, Zack Wheeler.

Peguero a toolsy 23-year-old center fielder, has hit .269/.283/.417 with three homers in 108 at-bats for Double-A Richmond this season. Last year, he hit .322 with 10 homers, 16 triples and 40 steals for Single-A San Jose, but it came with an 88/18 K/BB ratio in 510 at-bats.

2:20 p.m. EDT update: Heyman hears that the Phillies have said no to including either outfielder Domonic Brown or top pitching prospect Jarred Cosart in a deal for Beltran. They have other quality pieces, such as first baseman Jonathan Singleton, RHP Brody Colvin and RHP Trevor May, but the Mets may be able to do better.
