Some things I've read recently on the trade deadline:
-The Giants contacted the Twins about Michael Cuddyer, who is a .300 hitter with 14 homeruns this season and about 31 years old. Cuddyer would be a nice fit at a corner outfielder, but the Twins are holding on to all of their players because they don't feel they are out of the race yet and think they are built to win next year.
-The price for Beltran would be 2-3 top prospects. At this point, the Giants are not willing to give up Gary Brown (OF) and/or Zach Wheeler. Brown is said to be a pro-bound .300 hitter with 40+ SB, Wheeler is a top 30 minor league prospect. It's been said the Giants "do not match up well" with a trade to the mets for Beltran because they do not have the right prospects. However, the Phillies who are also kicking the tires on Beltran have said they would not give up RF Dominic Brown, and also have said they would not give up top prospects for a rent-a-player. It's been said by two NL execs that the "attention" the Phillies and Red Sox are giving to Beltran is partly fabricated by the Mets in order to draw the Giants into a straight up trade for Gary Brown. Just as I was typing this its been noted the Braves have the farm system it takes to trade good prospects to get him, and they may now be a front runner.
Personally, I would rather see the Giants hold onto Brown and Wheeler, and a more pleasant trade for the Giants, believe it or not, would be Jonathan Sanchez and draft picks. At this point, I think it's pretty slim we'll land Beltran.
-One guy I haven't heard a lot about the Giants on is BJ Upton. He's said to be available, but I'm guessing the price is too high.
-Hunter Pence is also available but is the 'Stros franchcise player. They'd need to have a HUGE trade to let him go, the Giants have probably talked to them but aren't going to do it.
-Kemp and Eithier will both likely be in LA next year. The closest thing the Giants might get from LA is infielder Jamie Carroll.
-Reyes will be signed by the Mets.
-Orlando Hudson was also an option the Giants were pursuing, butthat's probably been shut down since we picked up Keppinger.
Other than that, its worth noting we're clearly buyers in this deadline, but we also don't want to give anything up. It's been pointed out that in 2012 or 2013, the Giants could have a completely homegrown lineup, younger than it is today and also packed with more speed: Belt (1B), Burriss (2B), Crawford (SS), Sandoval (3B), Brown (OF), Ford (OF), Schierholtz (OF), Posey (C). We all know a lot can happen until then, particularly with the success of Burriss and Crawford, but that could be a lineup with enough scrap to keep us going to the playoffs for years to come.
