The 2011 MLB Draft gets underway on Monday evening and the Seattle Mariners will reap the benefits of an atrocious 2010 campaign. Although nothing will erase the bad taste of disappointment following a season in which the fans had high expectations, the Mariners will have a chance to pick-up a player that could become a cornerstone of the franchise with the second pick in the 2011 MLB Draft. Seattle last picked second just two years ago, and was able to secure Dustin Ackley, who appears to be just days away from making his major league debut....

Who will Seattle get to draft?

Gerrit Cole or Anthony Rendon?

Pirates most likely to get Cole, so maybe Rendon. They say Seattle has a lot of choices with the 2nd pick, though.

latest mock draft

The Pick: Anthony Rendon, 3B, Rice
The Buzz: This draft is incredibly deep but Rendon and Cole are the prizes, so the Mariners are not disappointed with having the No. 2 pick. Taking Rendon, who has been complimented with comparisons to franchise players Ryan Zimmerman and Evan Longoria, could give Seattle a future infield of Rendon, Nick Franklin, Dustin Ackley and Justin Smoak. His production has been slowed with ankle and shoulder injuries but neither appear to be long-term issues.

May Mock: Anthony Rendon, 3B, Rice
April Mock: Gerrit Cole, RHP, UCLA

I have heard they will take Lindor. Rendon's injury has suddenly dropped him out of the race. Or so i heard.

Starling may also be someone they pick.
Bubba would be a nice addition to the team. He's got some raw talent. But I think I'd rather the team go after Rendon.

We'll find out in about an hour, though.

The Seattle Mariners have taken Danny Hultzen with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft. The Mariners were widely connected to Rice third baseman Anthony Rendon with that pick, which suggests that drafting teams might know something about Rendon's shoulder that we, the fans, don't.

Hultzen is a lefty pitcher from the University of Virginia, and he's the sort of pick who's hard to ever really feel happy about, if you're a fan. Not that he can't be a good player, but when your team drafts a player, you want to be able to dream about what might happen five years down the road - what if he's the next Albert Pujols? Or C.C. Sabathia?

Well, in Hultzen's case, you can't do that. True, anything can happen, unlike other top pitching prospects, like UCLA's Gerrit Cole or high schooler Dylan Bundy, Hultzen's upside looks like it's probably limited - he has good command as a lefty and is likely to be ready to pitch in the majors soon, but his velocity isn't outstanding. There's nothing wrong with all that, but with a top-five pick in the first round, I would only want to pick someone like Hultzen if I thought my team was going to be back in the playoffs very soon. Generally, you shouldn't draft for need, but if you're willing to sacrifice that much upside with an early-first-round pick, there might as well be a good reason. Look for Hultzen to begin his pro career at the Class A+ or Class AA level and move quickly.

The buzz on Danny: Hultzen has been skyrocketing up draft boards with his stellar season. He has been being labeled as the pitcher with the most polish in the Draft and has pushed his name as high as the No. 1 pick. The lefty projects to be a quick contributor to any staff as a solid No. 3 pitching option.

After calming down a bit, the pick was probably the safest at the #2 spot, as all the other players they had targeted has some ? to them.

In fact, you usually wont see a hitter until about 4 years AFTER he is drafted. Pitchers can and have play in the MLB right away. I think Bedard, Fister, and Vargas are trade bait come July. Book it.

Jack Z knows what he is doing.

Mariners call up Mike Carp to add immediate offense

Many Seattle Mariners fans just got their wish, as Mike Carp(notes) was re-called from Triple-A Tacoma. Maybe he can be the answer that the Mariners have been looking for on offense these past few months.

Carp has been hitting .348 with 19 home runs and 58 RBIs for the Tacoma Rainiers this season. The statistics are basically mind-boggling, and might reveal that he is ready to make the leap to the major leagues. He played a bit last season during a quick call-up, and has a .264 batting average of 91 career at-bats at the major league level.

It's hard to look past the success that Carp has had at the Triple-A level this season, and he is now going to get the biggest chance of his young baseball career. The 24-year-old could see a lot of time at designated hitter for the Mariners if he can start hitting the ball well, and that could make Jack Cust(notes) very expendable. Cust has only hit .225 this year with two home runs, making him one of the worst performing DHs in the American League.

In order to clear out room for Carp, the Mariners had to option outfielder Mike Wilson(notes) back to the minor leagues. Wilson had also struggled while up with the team, but might not see any more time with the Mariners as Greg Halman(notes) has been filling in nicely out in the outfield. It's still early, but Halman has hit .857 in his first two games, going 6-for-7 while starting out in left field. If he can keep that up, and Carp can join him in success at the plate, the Mariners could be looking a lot better in the near future.

It has been a struggle for Seattle to find any offense this season, with players like Michael Saunders(notes), Milton Bradley(notes), and Ryan Langerhans(notes) all struggling to hit .200. Wilson couldn't do it either, and with struggles from Franklin Gutierrez(notes) and Ichiro Suzuki(notes) as well, some are calling this the worst offensive team that the Mariners have ever had. It's hard to argue with that statement when Chone Figgins(notes) is hitting .185, Justin Smoak(notes) is hitting .245, and Miguel Olivo(notes) is hitting just .242.

Hopefully, Carp can get into the lineup and hit well right away, because the Mariners have a tough schedule of games coming up.

Oh that's it? Lol
Especially since Strasburg took in a $15mil a year deal 2 years ago, and is considered the next Randy Johnson...and those only come around every 30 years or so.

Something about an inheritance of $25mil if he attends medical school and becomes a doctor by age 25 is the reason he is asking for so much. Either way, he comes out on top.
