“His work ethic was incredible,” McDonogh football coach Dom Damico told Baltimore radio station WJZ. “He worked hard, he was easy to coach, he took coaching well, he took criticism well and was just willing to outwork a lot of people.”
This probably had something to do with them drafting him too! Not just his speed, he may be "coachable"

Q: Reaction when picked by Raiders?

A: I was happy. ThereObviously, were so many different emotions were going through my head at the time. The rest of my family was happy. My mom was in tears and it's just a real blessing to be picked 7th overall.

Q: Surprised?

A: I found out maybe 2 minutes right before, but just talking to the coaches, having a workout with them, seeing them at the Combine, just doing all the regular stuff you got to do just before the draft."

Q: Thoughts when leaving college a year early?

A: I knew I could have been in the first round. I had a possibility of being in the early second so when I went to the Combine, I wanted to make sure I was staying in the first round. That's why I went out to Athletes Performance out in Arizona. Worked on what i had to work on so at the Combine, I could perform to the best of my ability. And from there, I just left it in God's hands and He put me in a good spot.

Q: Once ran a 4.23 in 2006? Have a different gear after 30?

A: Yeah, I get faster as I go. I feel like I have another gear, blowing up in high school and even my years in college, everybody says that I just put it in another gear. I don't know where it comes from. Maybe it's fear, maybe it's skill, but I definitely put it into another gear.

Q: After pro-style offense, thought much of going deep with JaMarcus?

A: I'm looking forward to it. Run full-speed and try to get under the ball and make a play. Running a pro-style offense in Maryland is really going to help me transition to the NFL game with the formations and the play calls.

Q: Lots of end around and reverses?

A: It was fun. We tried to get the ball to me in different ways. In the ACC, they do a great job of trying to stop your number 1 guy so I had a lot of brackets and a lot of double teams just to get me the handoff, a quick bubble screen, just to get me the ball was something I was able to do this past season.

Q: Answer to postdraft critics?

A: I just think Al Davis and the rest of the staff wanted me. They didn't care about if it was the 7th pick or the 15th pick. I think they just wanted me to be their guy and I'm happy that they chose me. I really can't worry about what everybody else is saying. All I can do is worry about me and the efforts I put in to be th ebest player I can be.

Q: Comparisons to Randy Moss?

A: I was honored. I think Randy Moss is the most skilled player in the NFL. He's just born with a lot of talent. But I also know that I have to make a name for myself, put a stamp on the Raiders being Darrius Heyward-Bey and not worry about comparisons to him or anybody else.

Q: Inconsistent hands, true?

A: That's peoples opinion. I don't think a lot of people watched Maryland games over the past three years. They've only looked at stats and compared them to other people and just think my hands aren't good but I can definitely catch the ball. I wouldn't be here if that wasn't the case.

Q: Ready to sign before camp?

A: It's very important. I want to get the deal done fast so I can get out there with JaMarcus and the rest of the guys to build that chemistry that I want to give that the rest of the team needs. I'm really looking forward to doing that.

Q: Basketball past, able to win jumpballs?

A: Yeah, actually, the high school I went to was a boarding school in Maryland. I went there to play basketball and couldn't shoot but I could definitely dunk. Been dunking pretty much since 7th grade. So going up and getting the ball is something I am capable of doing. At maryland, I didn't really have the opportunity to show my (jumping) ability, just a few times to makwe those plays other people can't make, so it's definitely in my future.

Q: Did Maryland QBs somewhat hold your stats down?

A: For me, it was more I understood the situation we had. The quarterbacks we had were great, good friends of mine, they tried their best to give me the ball. I just tell them to throw it up the best they can and I'll go and bring it down. And that's the way we did it. Having four quarterbacks in three years, it's tough for anybody but I just went out there and worked every day and tried to build that chemistry with each guy that I had.

Q: Expectations as a rookie?

A: You said goals. No. 1 is to go in there and learn as much as you can and to work hard. Then everything else will take care of itself. If you go in there (unclear) then nothing but good will happen.

Q: You're wearing No. 12?

A: That is the plan.

Q: Nickname?

A: Darrius Heyward-Bey has a nice ring to it but DHB is not bad. It's quick, it's fast, I think people will catch on pretty fast to that.

Great interview!! The only thing I don't like is the number that he's going to be wearing.... number 12? I was hoping that he'd go with a traditional number in the 80's...

I'll roll with it (him being number 12) too, this dude has got a cool attitude though. We do know that he has wheels/after burners so if he can catch (like I think he can) look out... He knows that there's a knock on him about his hands so he's going to be looking to prove folks wrong! Did you see what Cris Carter said about the dude on ESPN? Cris Carter dogged him out bad!

What did the Raiders lose?
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, April 28th, 2009 at 11:43 pm in Oakland Raiders.

After the on-line chat, I’ve been doing some freelance work today (not to mention helping coach in Little League _ another tough loss) including a preseason article which includes the categories “Key addition” and “key loss.”

The key addition was predetermined (Jeff Garcia). I’m supposed to come up with the “key loss,” and for the life of me, nothing is coming to mind.

Perhaps that’s further evidence of what has been a pretty smooth offseason.

Much of the nation seems to be up in arms about the Raiders draft, but as you’ve probably surmised, I think the draft is just about the most overanalyzed thing in football and that it’s worth waiting to see players actually on the field until forming a judgement.

Center Jake Grove left in free agency, but the Raiders replaced him with a younger, more durable player who is much cheaper in Samson Satele.

I liked Rashad Baker, who did some good things, and pointed him out as a prime example of a guy whose height-weight-speed combo didn’t make him a classic Raider. They’re planning on using a lot more of Tyvon Branch, and now Mike Mitchell, and I can see that.

(I don’t want to cheapen the loss at sea of Marquis Cooper by including him in a sports category when so much more was lost than a football player).

Not sure if the “key loss” has to be a player or not, because if a non-player is OK, the key loss is special teams coach Brian Schneider, who took the job of recruiting coordinator at USC.

That’s not to say John Fassel won’t do just fine, but Schneider presided over the best Raiders special teams since they came back to Oakland, with only a couple of down games.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Notes: The Raiders signed defensive lineman (correction _ guard) Jonathan Compas, according to the U.C. Davis Web site. Also due to arrive is Boise State tight end Chris O’Neil of Miramonte High School in Orinda.

The Raiders as a matter of policy do not announce undrafted free agent signees until they’re signed and have taken the field and then sometimes wait until the ink has dried for a week or three.

– Missed wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey on Comcast Sportsnet Bay Area, but the Chrons David White was a guest and has a transcription.

Joseph look good against the run and at watching the QB in the backfield he looks like at at the very least he could be a very hard hitting ball hawk on special teams or in run support somebody needs to give kirk a rest sometime kid my have it never know will keep an eye out when pre-season start for this kid a hard hitter for sure.
