you can bank on carter not doing shit for the raiders like he hasnt done shit in his whole career...

WR is the hardest postion in football to draft according to "potential"...more bust then studs higher up and a lot of "gems" in later rounds...

theres a lot of teams out there looking for WR help and for the 2nd year in a row the pickings are extremly thin...

Raiders last team standing
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, January 19th, 2009 at 11:58 am in Oakland Raiders.

With the news that Rex Ryan has apparently accepted the position of head coach with the Jets, the Raiders are left as the only team yet to name its leader for 2009.

The Jets haven’t announced Ryan’s hiring yet, but the NFL Network, the Associated Press and others are reporting it as a done deal and a Jets spokesman has yet to say that it was merely an interview to be the defensive coordinator and had nothing to do with the job of head coach.

Unless new Chiefs exec Scott Pioli cans Herman Edwards, or Jerry Jones changes his mind on Wade Phillips, only the Raiders remain.

If we’re to take the Raiders at their word, there remain only three candidates _ interim coach Tom Cable, Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride and Packers assistant head coach and linebackers coach Winston Moss.

The only one not to generate any real buzz about a potential hiring is Moss, who could end up being considered for defensive coordinator or linebackers coach in Oakland.

Green Bay has called a press conference for today where they’re expected to to announce Dom Capers as defensive coordinator, and there’ s always the possibility Capers will be given the opportunity to remake some of the remaining defensive staff.

Where Don Martindale fits in with the Raiders is not clear. Amid reports that Martindale had positioned himself as a Raiders head coaching candidate following an impressive interview Saturday, spokesman John Herrera, who speaks for the organization and on behalf of Al Davis, said it was not true.

The two talked defensive football, Herrera said.

Martindale could be pursued on Rex Ryan’s staff as a coordinator or linebackers coach. The two coached together at the University of Cincinnati, and Martindale in some ways qualifies as the long-lost triplet of Rob and Rex. That’s how close he is to the family.

Fiercely loyal to Davis, you wonder how Martindale will take the Raiders’ statement of his non-candidacy. I’m guessing Martindale walked out of that interview thinking he was a candidate to be the head coach, only have the club say he wasn’t.

As much as the Raiders catch heat for denying everything, it’s hard to imagine Davis telling Herrera to relay the message that Martindale was not a candidate, only to turn around and hire him as head coach a week or so later.

In any event, the only way this thing gets done quickly is if the Raiders bypass the whole press conference with a simple announcement naming a head coach.

There are coaches (including Tom Cable) and scouts in Mobile, Ala., this week for the Senior Bowl. A dead-week hire in the Week before the Super Bowl is a possibility.

Unless of course, the Davis wants to talk with Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley and gets smoke signals that suggest he’s interested.

Then we’re looking at Februrary.

As for the front-office hire Davis hinted at back on Sept. 30, it’s clear that position will be filled after a staff is already in place, rather than vice-versa.

Washington, Skipper on staff
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, January 19th, 2009 at 12:29 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders officially announced the hiring of Lionel Washington to coach defensive backs, and also have retained assistant coach Kelly Skipper, who will move from tight ends to running backs.

Washington has been with the Green Bay Packers since 1999 as an assistant, most recently coaching cornerbacks and the nickel package.

Last year’s defensive backs coach, Darren Perry, has interviewed with Al Davis and could be a candidate for defensvie coordinator.

Skipper was brought in originally to coach running backs during Lane Kiffin’s first year, moving to tight ends when the Raiders hired Tom Rathman, who had no experience with tight ends.

Washington and Skipper will be among the Raiders contigent of coaches along with interim coach Tom Cable in Mobile, Ala. Also expected to be there is Don Martindale, a Raiders candidate for defensive coordinator who could be pursued by other teams, most notably Cleveland and the New York Jets.

Raiders senior executive John Herrera said there remain “one or two” coaches of interest Davis may wish to speak to before hiring a head coach. He declined to say whether any of them are with Arizona or Pittsburgh, coaches who are off limits until after the Super Bowl.

Herrera said the Raiders will not be talking with Denver quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates about the head coaching position.

The Raiders, according to the Rocky Mountain News, requested permission to speak to Bates. Various reports without attributed sources have said Bates declined to be interviewed unless it was for the head coaching position.

Bates, 32, was a play caller for Denver last year and is a more likely candidate for offensive coordinator. New coach Josh McDaniels is expected to call plays for the Broncos this year.

(UPDATE: Bates, who had talked with Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz about being offensive coordinator, has accepted a job as an assistant coach on Pete Carroll’s staff at USC).

Raiders zero in on Saunders as offensive coordinator
By Steve Corkran

The Raiders are making another run at Al Saunders. This time, it will be for the offensive coordinator vacancy created by the departure of Greg Knapp to the Seattle Seahawks.

Saunders was just fired by the St. Louis Rams as part of the purge of the Rams staff by new coach Steve Spagnuolo. Saunders may interview with the Raiders as soon as today.

"We anticipate giving him an interview within the next day or two," Raiders senior executive John Herrera said Tuesday.

Raiders managing general partner Al Davis interviewed Saunders for the head coaching vacancy in 2006 before Davis settled upon Art Shell. Saunders was hired by the Washington Redskins that season.

He returned this season to the Rams franchise that he helped to reach the Super Bowl in the 1999 season. However, new Rams coach Spagnuolo already is interviewing prospective replacements for Saunders.

Saunders is regarded by many as one of the most innovative and gifted offensive coordinators in the NFL.

He's been a coach in the NFL for 26 seasons with the Chargers, Chiefs and Redskins as well as the Rams. Saunders, 61, was head coach of the Chargers from midseason of 1986, when he replaced Don Coryell, through 1988.

The Rams offense averaged 287.2 yards per game in 2008, or 15 more than the Raiders. Both offenses were ranked in the bottom fourth of the league in this category.

The Raiders remain in the market for a replacement for departed defensive coordinator
Rob Ryan. Don Martindale no longer is an option.
Martindale signed with the Denver Broncos as their linebackers coach Tuesday afternoon, two people close to Martindale said.

Martindale interviewed with Davis on Saturday about the prospect of returning for a sixth season with the Raiders. He spent his five seasons here as the linebackers coach.

Martindale was being considered as the successor to Ryan. He opted to make a lateral move to the Broncos once it became apparent that he wasn't assured of being rehired by the Raiders, two people close to Martindale said.

His contract expired Jan. 13, but he remained hopeful of sticking around. ESPN reported that Martindale interviewed for the head coaching vacancy. That wasn't the case, according to Herrera.

"We were very straightforward and forthcoming with him in his interview with Mr. Davis," Herrera said. "He was not under consideration for the head coaching position. That is 100 percent correct."

In other news, Raiders defensive tackles coach Don Johnson accepted the defensive line position with the San Diego Chargers on Tuesday.

Johnson is the seventh coach from former Raiders coach Lane Kiffin's staff who won't be around in 2009. He joins, Martindale, assistant offensive line coach James Cregg, Knapp, Ryan, special teams coach Brian Schneider and running backs coach Tom Rathman as those who have been hired elsewhere.

Herrera said it's important to point out a certain amount of turnover is natural each season.

Note: Offensive quality control coach Adam Henry is expected to be promoted to tight ends coach within the next few days. Kelly Skipper handled that role last season, but he has replaced Rathman as running backs coach.

Raiders interview two coaches

The Raiders interviewed Al Saunders for their offensive coordinator vacancy Wednesday and former Seattle Seahawks defensive line coach Dwaine Board for a similar position with the Raiders.

Saunders was the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams last season, but he is expected to be jettisoned by new Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo. He has coached in the NFL the past 26 seasons.

Board was let go by new Seahawks coach Jim Mora once he took over for retired coach Mike Holmgren earlier this month. Board spent the past six seasons with Seattle.

The Raiders are seeking a replacement for offensive coordinator Greg Knapp, hired by Mora earlier this month. Raiders senior executive John Herrera said two more people are scheduled to interview for the offensive coordinator's job before managing general partner Al Davis makes a decision.

Board is being considered for the position held by Keith Millard the past four seasons. Millard is scheduled to interview with Green Bay.
