SFGate: Raiders Silver and Black Blog : JaMarcus in the house
Quote:
Put away the milk carton mugshot. Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell is here for voluntary workouts. I know. I drove to team headquarters in Alameda to see for myself.
Russell pulled up in his white Mercedez Benz just after 11 a.m. He rolled down the window and said "What's up?" before asking James Lofton for the gate code.
Asked how his offseason was going, Russell said, "It's going all right" before he wheeled it inside the gate.
I wanted to ask what he thought about Cable's comments this week at the NFL owner's meeting, but Russell clearly wasn't in a chatty mood. He has yet to warm up to media interviews, which is fine: that's not his job.
It is his job, according to Cable, to put in more time than anyone else on the roster because that's just what quarterbacks do. Cable went into great detail Tuesday about how Russell needed to embrace his role as the leader of this team, saying that he has started to put in the extra time, but that more is needed from him.
Writers across the country certainly picked up on it, from Vic Carrucci of NFL.com to today's interesting take on profootballtalk.com.
Well, at least we now know Russell is here now after missing the first week of voluntary workouts for whatever reason.
As for Cable's very public assessment of Russell's clock-punching, one teammate (name withheld, of course )said he wasn't surprised.
"That's how Coach Cable is, he calls it how he sees it," the player said. "He doesn't sugarcoat anything."
Speaking of being in Alameda ...
** Right tackle Cornell Green waved hello through his deeply tinted windows on the way out of the team parking lot. Guess he didn't to stop and talk about last weekend's arrest in Tampa, where he was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon against the mother of his two children.
A Raider official said they are still gathering information before deciding if something will be done. For now, they are allowing Green to participate in the offseason workout program.
** Did I mention James Lofton is still coming to work?
He was ousted as wide receivers coach in January after one season on the job. No idea what his new role is, and a team official declined to say, but it apparently still pays enough to keep his Porsche rolling.
** Some of you are saying you'd like to see an interview done with new defensive coordinator John Marshall.
Requests have been made by me and the other beat guys with no luck. He won't likely be made available until the first minicamp, and that won't be until after the draft.
** New left tackle Khalif Barnes is already here for offseason workouts, but more on that in the next blog ...
Others confirmed to be working out this week are offensive guards Robert Gallery and Cooper Carlisle; running backs Justin Fargas, Darren McFadden and Michael Bush; linebackers Kirk Morrison, Thomas Howard and Ricky Brown; and tons of other players not easily identified through dark tinted windows.
