Some Positive News Raider Nation: Barnes visits Raiders

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BARNES VISITING RAIDERS
Posted by Aaron Wilson on March 4, 2009, 2:35 p.m. EST
Jacksonville Jaguars free agent offensive tackle Khalif Barnes is visiting the Oakland Raiders today, according to Albert Breer of SportingNews.com.

Per Breer, Barnes had a visit scheduled to New Orleans at the start of the free agent signing period last week.

However, that meeting was nullified by the Saints re-signing Jon Stinchcomb to a five-year contract.

Barnes, 26, started every game last season at left tackle for the Jaguars, who experienced a lot of injuries along the offensive line.

REPORT: THE THREE MISSING BOATERS TOOK OFF THEIR LIFE VESTS
Posted by Mike Florio on March 4, 2009, 1:28 p.m. EST

Rarely if ever do I struggle to start writing one of these items. But I’ve spent the past several minutes at a complete loss for words.

Apparently, Nick Schuyler has informed authorities that each of the other three men who were on the 21-foot fishing boat that capsized off the Gulf Coast of Florida voluntarily removed their life jackets.

Within two to four hours after the boat flipped, one of the two NFL players, Marquis Cooper of the Raiders and Corey Smith of the Lions, removed his life jacket and allowed himself to drift out to sea.

Then, a few hours later, the other NFL player did the same.

Finally, on Monday morning, Bleakley thought he saw a light in the distance. So he removed his life jacket and swam to it in an effort to get help.

“I think he was delusional to think he could swim someplace,” Bob Bleakley said.

This news makes the tragedy even more horrific. If they only had stayed together on the hull of the boat, they all would have been saved.

But the psychological burdens of such circumstances are surely very heavy, and reality like becomes twisted and distorted very quickly.

So, again, pray for the families of the men who were lost. But also pray for Nick Schuyler, who will carry the guilt that goes along with being the only survivor of the tragedy, and that goes along with the fact he wasn’t able to convince three of his friends to refuse to surrender.damn rip that is some fucked up shit

So it looks like they were out on the boat without their life jackets on. The boat flips over and then Bleakley swims under to get all of the life jackets for them to put on. So they put them on and then ended up taking them off?

Breaking news: Javon takes paycut
Raiders wide receiver Javon Walker did a "major restructuring" of his contract, a league source familiar with the significantly reduced deal told The Chronicle this morning, allowing him to stay on the team for a second season and giving the Raiders much-needed cap relief.

For starters, Walker's $5 million roster bonus was eliminated -- well, sort of. Instead of a bonus, he'll get his adjusted base salaries guaranteed for the next two seasons against skill, injury and cap.

As far as average annual salary goes, Walker went from (potentially) $9 million a year to $3.2 million a year.

He makes $2 million in base salary this season and $2.6 million next season -- that accounts for all but $400,000 of his roster bonus. But be sure, he's losing serious money with slashed base salaries.

He was due $4 million this season and $6 million next season. He also will make $3.2 million in 2011 (instead of $8 million), $3.8 million in 2012 (instead of $10 million) and $4.4 million in 2013 (instead of $10 million).

Of course, those latter years were inflated to begin with and the Raiders were never going to keep him around at those costs.

The Raiders win because his cap number just plunged from nearly $10 million to $2 million this season. Walker wins, sort of, because he would not have likely made anything close to this on the market if the Raiders released him, which a source said they were ready to do if he did not agree to a restructured contract.

OK, enough with numbers.

Now, the Raiders need to see what they can squeeze out of Walker after a disastrous first season that netted 15 catches (with $12 million paid) and a trip to the Injured Reserve with ankle surgery...its about fucking time!!!
