NFL Team: Washington Redskins 2008 Picks
Round 2: 3(34) Devin Thomas WR MICHIGAN STATE
Washington couldn't be happier about Thomas slipping, considering no one would have blinked had the Redskins selected him in the first round. Thomas isn't as good at stretching the field as his speed would suggest, and he needs to improve his route running. But he has the quickness and athletic ability to continue to improve in those areas. He's also very good creating after a catch for a player his size.
Round 2: 17(48) Fred Davis TE USC
There were concerns about Davis' ability to stretch the field before the combine, and his slow 40 time backed up what we saw on film. He isn't an overwhelming in-line blocker, either, but he does a good job getting in position and he fights to sustain his blocks. In addition, he has the athletic ability, big hands and long arms to emerge as a reliable possession receiver.
Round 2: 20(51) Malcolm Kelly WR OKLAHOMA
It looked at one time like Kelly would be the first receiver off the board. Concerns about his speed and durability caused his stock to drop. That said, Kelly could be one of thesteals of this draft if he's able to stay healthy. He has outstanding size, very strong hands and he can make plays in traffic. Although he needs to improve his route-running, he changes directions fairly well. He'll be able to separate from man coverage once his footwork improves.
Round 3: 33(96) Chad Rinehart OG NORTHERN IOWA
He needs to work on his technique, especially his ability to get his hands inside the defender's frame, which would allow him to control his blocks. Obviously there are concerns about the level of competition he faced at Northern Iowa. However, he has excellent size, he's quick and has the upper-body strength to jar defenders with his power.
Round 4: 25(124) Justin Tryon CB ARIZONA STATE
Tryon plays bigger than his size would suggest, but he struggles tackling bigger ball carriers. He opens his hips well and is comfortable in press coverage, but bigger receivers can shield him from the ball.
Round 6: 2(168) Durant Brooks PT GEORGIA TECH
He was the best punter at the college level last year, winning the Ray Guy award. This was a major need for the Redskins and they took the best punter available.
Round 6: 14(180) Kareem Moore S NICHOLLS STATE
Moore is a playmaker both in coverage and as a return man. He also has good size and the potential to develop into an in-the-box safety, but he faces a steep learning curve.
Round 6: 20(186) Colt Brennan QB HAWAII
Brennan put up outstanding numbers at Hawaii. He's quick enough to buy time in the pocket and accurate enough to lead receivers when throwing underneath. However, there are substantial concerns about the Hawaii spread scheme inflating his numbers and he doesn't have great arm strength, either. His recent hip surgery raises concerns about Brennan's ability to stay healthy too.
Round 7: 35(242) Rob Jackson DE KANSAS STATE
He's an undersized prospect who struggles to hold his own against the run, but Jackson is tall enough to add some weight to his frame. In addition, though he doesn't have great top-end speed he's quick enough to make plays.
Round 7: 42(249) Christopher Horton S UCLA
Experienced, tough, in-the-box safety who fills hard. The biggest knock on him is that he's one dimensional because he has too many limitations in coverage.
I give the Redskins B-/C+ grade for this draft!! Shoot its been the first time in a long while we had a decent draft since Synder always gives up most of our picks on trades for vets... I'm glad we picked up Thomas and Kelly to help Jason Campbell have bigger(tall) targets in the middle of the field for short yardage situations and to help compliment speedsters Santana Moss and Randle-El.... Even though Reed Doughty played okay in the absence of Taylor(R.I.P), I like what the Redskins did to pick up Horton and Moore to battle for the BIG void we have in the middle of the field. The pick of Durrant Brooks is going to help us out alot in the special teams since Frost is sometimes unreliable and sometime shanks punts. I was very surprised on Colt Brennan being available in the 6th round and would be a great 3rd stringer behind Campbell and Collins and who knows if Campbell later on doesn't pan out as our franchise QB, Brennan could be the man to replace him! I wish we could have gotten a few more picks on our lines especially on defense..... Our offensive line is good when healthy but they are getting older and are often injury prone. Our defense is also older with a few up and comming players but can't create to much pressure to cause opposing QB's into mistakes and get sacks. Maybe we'll address our lines thru free agency. But all in all it was a good draft for the Skins compared to past years!
