WR Murphy, CB Johnson undergo surgery; Murphy out for opener

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, August 17th, 2011 at 6:15 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders coach Hue Jackson just announced that starting wide receiver Louis Murphy and starting cornerback Chris Johnson are undergoing surgery for undisclosed injuries. Murphy won’t be able to play in the regular-season opener Sept. 12, Jackson said. Johnson is expected back for that game.

Murphy has missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury. He said a few days ago that he was running and feeling as if he was close to returning to practice. Something obviously happened along the way to a return, given Jackson’s revelation.

Murphy led all Raiders wide receivers in receptions and yards last season. He tied Jacoby Ford for the most receiving touchdown by a wide receiver.

With Murphy out, the Raiders are in sore need of getting back from injury Chaz Schilens and Jacoby Ford. Jackson said Schilens is “getting close” to returning from the injury he suffered against the Arizona Cardinals last Thursday. Ford’s broken left hand is almost healed.

Rookie DeMarcus Van Dyke has been thrust ino the role of starting cornerback opposite Stanford Routt now that Johnson is out. Jackson said Van Dyke looked much improved in practice Wednesday.

In other news, projected starting center Samson Satele left practice with an undisclosed injury. It appeared to be to one of his legs. A member of the media spotted Satele being hauled off to a nearby hospital for tests.

Jackson said Satele’s injury is a “tweak, a nick,” but it’s “nothing major. Rookie Stefen Wisniewski received the majority of reps at center with Satele gone.

Mitchell has missed most of training camp with an unspecified injury. He played an important role in Oakland’s defense last season as an extra defensive back in certain situations.

if the Jets eat our secondary alive we're gonna be in real big trouble the following week when Tom Brady comes to the town

I've also said I'm worried about our secondary... our front 7 need to be running shit on the field

When Al Davis dies.

Rich Gannon came from jumping from team to team, not like he was this savior that everyone knew of.

Tony wouldn't put Aaron Brooks on that list, that's his all time favorite QB!!!! lol
Lol, Brooks was my dude, I used to be servin' mf's on Madden when I played with Brooks. Good he came to Oakland for that one year because that made me an Oakland Raider fan ever since... But Brooks is up there with my all time favorite QB's.... I liked Randall Cunningham, Steve Young and Aaron Brooks.

Campbell is going to be the man, don't kid yourself. If you have watched enough football it is obvious the Raiders are on the verge of something special. We have quality leaders in the locker room, a quality staff, etc. That is something Oakland has been missing for some time. I predict we go atleast 11-5 this year.

We need to take one from either the pats or jets to let the league know we're here. And I'll think we'll jet to mark Sánchez and rattle him. I'll post my win loss by game later, but I'm thinkn 10-6

you think the guys on defense forgot about sanshez pulling that hotdog stunt last time? they're gonna tear his ass up, jets are going down. brady will most likely shred us, unless our D-line can get to him the same way that the giants did in the super bowl.

I wouldn't take buffalo or Miami for granted.... Teams traveling cross country do usually play up to there potential...
Not one NFL game should be taken for granted, but speaking from talent and a team that's moving forward that's what "should" happen. Chad Henne isn't a QB that's going to do much damage and their running game doesn't exist (from the outside looking in as of now), Buffalo is playing with nothing to lose and can beat any team any given Sunday, but again this is what should happen.
