Oakland Raiders Name Hue Jackson Head Coach

Posted 31 minutes ago

Hue Jackson will formally be introduced as Head Coach of The Oakland Raiders tomorrow.

Jackson has 25 years of coaching experience in college and professional football and has been an offensive coordinator at both levels.

Oakland Raiders Owner Al Davis spoke about the dynamic 45-year-old Jackson: “The fire in Hue will set a flame that will burn for a long time in the hearts and minds of the Raider football team and the Raider Nation.”

Last year, Jackson coordinated an Oakland Raiders offense that finished fourth in the AFC and sixth in the NFL in scoring (25.6 points per game). The Raiders more than doubled their scoring output from the previous year, totaling 410 points in 2010.

Under Jackson’s guidance, the Raiders also finished fifth in the AFC and 10th in the NFL in total offense (354.6 yards per game) and second in the NFL and AFC in rushing (155.9 yards per game).

Prior to joining the Raiders, Jackson spent two seasons as Baltimore’s quarterbacks coach and helped the Ravens advance to the postseason in 2008 and 2009. In 2008, Jackson tutored Joe Flacco, who became the first rookie QB to win two playoff games in NFL history as the Ravens advanced to the AFC Championship game.

In 2007, Jackson was an NFL offensive coordinator for the second time when he served in that capacity for the Atlanta Falcons. He was offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins in 2003 and also held that post twice at the college level—the University of Southern California from 1997-2000 and the University of California in 1996.

Under Jackson’s tutelage in Cincinnati (2004-06), Chad Ochocinco and T.J. Houshmandzadeh became one of the most prolific wide-receiving tandems in NFL history. In 2006, as wide receivers coach for Cincinnati, Ochocinco (1,369) and Houshmandzadeh (1,081) became the first pair of Bengals to eclipse the 1,000-yard receiving mark in a single season. Ochocinco led the NFL in receiving yards and for the fourth-consecutive season, his yards topped the AFC, marking the first time a player had led his conference in receiving yards in four straight seasons.

In 2005 under Jackson, the Ochocinco-Houshmandzadeh tandem combined to total 175 receptions for 2,388 yards, while helping the team secure the AFC North title and a playoff berth for the first time in a decade.

Jackson was promoted to offensive coordinator in Washington by Head Coach Steve Spurrier in 2003 and handled the team’s offensive play-calling, becoming the only coach to perform that duty other than Spurrier.

In 2002, with Jackson as running backs coach, Pro Bowl RB Stephen Davis was on pace for another 1,000-yard rushing season before suffering a season-ending injury. Davis posted a career-high 1,432 rushing yards in 2001.

Jackson served as USC’s offensive coordinator from 1997-2000, helping to recruit and develop players, including QB Carson Palmer, with whom he was later reunited in Cincinnati. (Palmer was the NFL’s No. 1-overall pick by the Bengals in 2003.)

As Cal’s offensive coordinator in 1996, Jackson helped lead the Golden Bears to an Aloha Bowl berth. He coached running backs at Arizona State from 1992-95. He was a minority intern fellowship coach in training camp with the Washington Redskins in 1995, with the Arizona Cardinals in 1992 and the L.A. Rams in 1990.

From 1990-91, Jackson was running backs coach and special teams coordinator at Cal State Fullerton. He gained pro coaching experience as a running backs/wide receivers/special teams coach for the London Monarchs of the World League in the spring. Jackson launched his career as an assistant coach at Pacific in1987 and coached there through 1989.

As a quarterback at Pacific from 1985-86, Jackson threw for 2,544 yards and 19 TDs. He also lettered in basketball in 1986 and earned his degree in Physical Education. Jackson is a Los Angeles native who was a star quarterback at Dorsey High School in his hometown, where he also lettered in basketball.

Oakland Raiders promote Hue Jackson to head coach
By Jerry McDonald
Oakland Tribune

Raiders announce they have hired Hue Jackson as head coach

Hue Jackson, who presided over one of the NFL's most improved offenses in 2010, was elevated from Raiders offensive coordinator to head coach Monday.

Jackson, 45, replaces Tom Cable, who left the Raiders on Jan. 4 with a 17-27 record when the club declined to extend a two-year option on his contract after an 8-8 season.

Jackson will be introduced at a news conference Tuesday at 1:15 p.m. at the club facility in Alameda.

"The fire in Hue will set a flame that will burn for a long time in the hearts and minds of the Raider football team and the Raider Nation," Raiders managing general partner Al Davis said in a statement.

Jackson is the only known candidate to become the Raiders' 17th head coach (including two tours by Art Shell) and was promoted after joining the organization last Jan. 26 to take over as the play-caller and offensive coordinator for Cable, who wore both of those hats in 2009.

With Jackson running the offense, the Raiders more than doubled their scoring output, going from 31st in the NFL with 197 points to sixth with 410. Oakland jumped from 31st in total offensive yardage to 10th and went from 21st in the league in rushing to second at 155.9 yards per game.

Having gone 74 games dating back to 2005 without gaining 400 yards of offense in a game, the Raiders gained 406 yards in Week 2 under Jackson in 2010 and finished the season with 400-plus yards five times, including three games of more than 500 yards.

Oakland's offensive production was the primary reason for a three-game improvement on the 2009 season as the Raiders remained in playoff contention until Week 16, went 6-0 in the AFC West and snapped an unprecedented streak of seven consecutive seasons with 11 or more losses.

Stories hinting at discord between Jackson and Cable during the season were met with denials, with Cable advocating Jackson for other head coaching positions before Davis decided to make a change.

Jackson was given permission by the Raiders on Jan. 4 to interview for the 49ers vacancy after the firing of Mike Singletary. The Raiders announced that same day they had not picked up Cable's option.

Cable's departure was met with dismay by a handful of players who publicly backed his return. The promotion of Jackson, tight end Zach Miller believes, could smooth over whatever hard feelings exist from Cable's ouster.

"I think it will help for some of the players, definitely," Miller said. "Keeping the offensive coordinator as the head coach will allow us to have some continuity and allow us to keep building rather than changing everything up."

Said cornerback Stanford Routt: "As much as I like Tom and would have liked to have him back, there was a part of me that wanted to see what it would be like to have Hue in charge, and now I guess we'll find out."

Jackson's impact on the offense raised not only the statistical production but the energy level.

During offseason workouts as well as during training camp, Jackson kept up a sharp-tongued running dialogue not only with offensive players but defensive players as well.

"He had these little jabs that he used to make you go out and compete, even during those dog days where you might not feel like it," Routt said. "It was his way to instill competition in the offense, while at the same time elevating our play because we wanted to shut him up."

The Raiders are entering their 17th season in Oakland since leaving Los Angeles after the 1994 season, and Jackson is the ninth head coach in that span.

Each of the last two coaches, Lane Kiffin and Cable, filed grievances with Davis over money. Kiffin, fired with cause four games into the 2008 season, had his grievance denied for back pay.

Cable was docked $20,000 in each of his last six paychecks for a total of $120,000 for reasons not made public. Cable's agent, Don Yee, would only say, "The league will process this matter accordingly."

Davis interviewed Jackson, then the quarterbacks coach of the Baltimore Ravens, over a three-day period a year ago before hiring him as offensive coordinator. Speculation began immediately he was being groomed to take over as head coach with Cable, 9-19 going into this season, having just a year to go on his contract.

According to ESPN, veteran Al Saunders is likely to become Jackson's offensive coordinator. Saunders has interviewed with Davis on two occasions to become head coach and once to be an assistant.

Saunders was an offensive consultant with the Baltimore Ravens last year when Jackson was quarterbacks coach, has been an offensive coordinator with the Rams (2008) and Chiefs (2001-05) and was assistant head coach with Washington in 2006-07, during which time Jason Campbell started 20 games at quarterback.

The only Raiders coaches under contract other than Jackson for 2011 are defensive line coach Mike Waufle and defensive backs coach Kevin Ross, although some could be retained.

Defensive coordinator John Marshall, whose unit gave up 30 or more points six times, including four of the last seven games, will not return, according to team sources.

Before joining the Ravens in 2008, Jackson was offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons (2007), wide receivers coach for the Cincinnati Bengals (2004-06), running backs coach and then offensive coordinator of the Redskins (2001-03), offensive coordinator at USC (1997-00) and running backs coach and then quarterbacks coach at Arizona State (1992-95).

In 1996, Jackson was offensive coordinator on Steve Mariucci's staff at Cal, where he worked with Cable. He also had stints as an assistant coach at Pacific (1987-89) and Cal State Fullerton (1990).

with tha Hue Jackson promotion as HC, looks like all our key FAs want to stay on board.. I was concerned of losing Z. Miller on tha offensive side, but he's had nothing but good things to say about Hue bein HC.. so he'll most likely be resigned a long with M. Bush.. gotta start gettn contracts worked out for Aso & Seymour as well .. 2 defensive leaders who we cannot afford to let both get away

Chad Ochocinco A Hue Jackson Fan, Are Raiders In His Future?
By
Chuck Carroll
»Football News Now Staff Writer» January 17, 2011 - 11:53 pm

Chad Ochocinco’s time may be drawing to a close in Cincinnati. The veteran wide receiver spent much of Monday on Twitter talking about other teams he’d like to play for.

He first said pairing himself with New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick would be “epic.” Later in the day he gave a shout out and vote of confidence to newly hired Oakland Raiders head coach Hue Jackson.

“Congratulations 2 Hue Jackson for becoming thee Oakland Raiders new head coach,” Ochocinco posted on the micro-blogging site. “Best receiver coach I’ve ever had.”

Naturally, one has to wonder if Ochocinco would be a good fit for the Raiders. It certainly sounds like he wouldn’t mind playing under Jackson a second time.

During Jackson’s three-year stint as Bengals receivers coach, Ochocinco and T.J. Houshmandzadeh became the first pair of Cincinnati receivers to surpass the 1,000-yard mark in a single season.

Ochocinco and the Raiders

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, January 20th, 2011 at 12:49 pm in Oakland Raiders.

If Chad Ochcocinco and the Cincinnati Bengals are truly headed for a divorce as speculated on Bengals.com, Hue Jackson’s presence as head coach would seem to make the Raiders a potential destination.

If the team’s own Web site is floating the possibility, there’s probably something there.

When Jackson was hired, Ochocinco said on his Twitter account: “Congratulations 2 Hue Jackson for becoming the Oakland Raiders new head coach. Best receiver coach I ever had.”

Earlier this month, there were these tweets:

“I would not care where Hue Jackson got a job. I would go play for him, run through a wall, jump in front of a bus, etc. u get the point.”

“Man that was the greatest coach I ever had. Hue Jackson would choke me out, cuss me out, just to make sure I was precise on everything.

“It would be refreshing to be with Hue Jackson again. I know I wouldn’t have to worry about being thrown under a bus again.”

The “under the bus” reference has to do with his strained relationship with current Bengals coach Marvin Lewis.

I dont kno how I'd feel about having Ocho on tha Raiders... he is clearly on his downside .. he seems to be more into tha celebrity tv show life and twitter then his game play.. dont know if I'd want a vet WR like that with these young guys we got in tha locker room.. then again he's a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot better than what we currently have so maybe Hue can get his mind right.. Plaxico Burress is someone who I'd really go after.. after his prison term he'll be fresh and ready to produce just like Vick did

I'd much rather we go after plax or vjack. if ocho is willing to sign for cheap with us, then why not though? dhb might improve next season, but probably won't ever be able to produce the same numbers. louis murphy continues to have problems holding onto the ball and didn't improve all that much in year 2. chaz could very likely catch another season killing injury. that just leaves jacoby ford, we can't have dude out there all by himself.

I dunno about plaxico

he's been out of the league for a while... we dunno how good he's gonna be when he comes back... but then again, we wouldn't have to pay much for him

being locked up couldn't have hurt him too bad, he had nothing to do but workout anyway. besides, you either have good hands or you don't. not really something you can gain or lose and plax definitely has good hands.

yeah, but who's our prime receiver now?

I'm not sure if Ochocinco is a great number 1 receiver right now, but he's better than anything we have now

sure he can work out... but not being on the field running around and playing football is gonna effect him

maybe it just takes him some time to get back to or near the level he was at, but he's already 33

I mean if you look at Vick, his first year back he didn't look like the player he looked like before... it took him a while to get back

but like I said... I'm down to get Plaxico if we could get him for cheap... I'd also be happy if we grabbed Ochocinco

at the end of the day we need a veteran talented WR... we can't be too picky, because anything will be better than what we have
