that major money is way better, even if you get shelved. the biggest sellers in the bay do less than 20k. lets say if you blessed to hit 10k and you getting top dollar about 7 bucks per and you drop two projects in a year. that gives you 140k, subtract about 30k for manufacturing and posters and flyers. subtract another twenty for street team and radio promo. subtract 10 more for miscellaneous. leaves about 80. lets hope there is no executive producer. now with 80 grand( you did not pay taxes but fuck that we from the turf) and if you live a teenage lifestyle, still got a room at your moms house, some clothes at your babymomma's and she on section eight, no rent, no real address. then you can floss with a cool whip and few grand in your pocket when you hit the club. but only the top of the food chain can get it like that. and even then one check from the majors erases all that. if it is really about the money, go major, if you want to be famous you can do it indie but it takes hard work.

on a side note, i like when people say "the bay is back??? the bay aint back because it never left!!!!!".... that shows that they are bandwagoneers and haven't been listening to bay area shit for very long.

they're talkin about the attention, not the music

Fuck this thread. The Bay aint never left. I'm from LA and got sooo much love for The Bay. I love Bay Swag... I love Bay Hustle... man fuck the majors. I love the way Bay Brothaz be feelin themselves and I just dont think that the industry can do that type swag any justice. I think they will just use and abuse like a gold diggin bitch. On one hand I want the Bay to blow up but on the other hand I want it to stay organic. I want The Bay to stay indy. Basically... I love the way Bay Area music is created and really dont want to see it change. I love the artwork too. I buy Bay shit and will always support Bay shit. Keep it indy ya'll. Imma always support ya'll shit.

Once again you're back to arguing what's better indie or major. as i stated several times by now, I was soley addressing fame. Growing up in the bay and watching cats make so much money off indie albums, I definetly see the benefits of being independent and if I was in the game thats where I would be. I would only go major if I could find a deal just as or more beneficial as my indie game.
...there it is!!!

...and with the birth of the internet(just getting started) and mind numb-n multimedia/video possibilities its a great time to be independent, oh my it is!

No, not foolish. You're chances of being shelved are are waaaaay bigger. You also have to keep in mind that depending on your contract, you can't release ANY material unless it comes out through the major label you're signed to. Some of y'all are brainwashed to think that being on TV and in the public eye = successful and it's sooooooo not what it seems.

So if you're in the process of getting Rass Kassed, you're stuck and can't do shit about it. But you're on a major... whoopee..
Yeah but the point you're missing is that the potential upside is a lot greater being signed to a major. So yeah, nobody can shelve you if you're indy, but if no one knows about you then??? More people probably know about Ras Kass than any Bay artist, he's had more longevity than most Bay artists, has performed with dudes like Rakim... you think that would have happened if he never signed to Priority? nahh... Fame doesn't necessarily = $$$, but it does if you know how to capitalize on the opportunities that fame creates.

I wouldn't say much better. I'd say about the same or worse.

The risk you run by signing to a major is that you may NEVER actually come out because you don't have control over that. The big wigs have the final say so whether your project gets any push.

As long as you're indie, you have control over whether you come out or not.
You're focusing on the being shelved aspect too much.

These are some of the benefits being signed to a major label affords:
1. Credibility of being a signed artist
2. Relationships with media outlets (TV, print, radio, etc)
3. Better beats/production
4. Promotion - They pay to press their artist's mixtapes! I know this for fact b/c I was sitting in Naim Ali's office at WBR in Burbank, and they were talking about pressing 10k of Jay Rock's new Watts Finest III mixtape by DJ Skee.

People want to fuck with artists who are signed! Yuk asked me to hook him up with Jay Rock so they could do a mixtape joint. You think that would've happened if he wasn't signed to WB and had a song on the radio? probably not. Would Ya Boy be doing songs with Ms. Jade if she wasnt Timbaland's artist? nope Think they'd be playin 2 Steppin with my Glock in the bay if dude wasnt signed to JD? nope nope nope

But that's my point, so of course I'm going to focus on it.

If the label does not believe in you, even though you're signed, you're not going to be able to benefit from all of that other stuff you mentioned. Those resources and that support will go to the artist(s) that have delivered records that the label believes in.

Yeah you're "signed" but that shit is smoke and mirrors because it don't guarantee that the label will back you. You can go around to everybody and they mama and tell em you're "signed", but if you're not given the opportunity to take advantage of all that the label has to offer, you might as well stay independent.
