One of the functions of a single is to promote the album, and not necessarily to the die-hard fans. True, this theory is more effective with radio or video play since it's then in the company of things non-fans want to hear and thus are almost "forced" to give it a chance, but "singles/leaks" still have their place on the internet.
Showing people the cover and asking them to pre-order will certainly work on people who were already planning on buying the album, but it's not going to be effective in pulling in new customers. Someone stumbles upon the "single/leak" when it makes it's rounds on some of the internet music hotspots like HipHopDX, and you have the potential of someone who had no plans of buying the album to hear the material and sway them in the other direction.
But why rely on that when you can just wait until the albums release week is almost over, and release a video on the internet asking your fans to buy multiple copies of your album because you want to "bumrush the charts."
