Yes IMO people should be able to pay for services they want - and not pay for those that they don't. If I choose not to pay the tab on police services, than they can let my call go to voice-mail when I call.

so like the families house that burned down because they didn't pay the $75/year charge for the firemen? Which of course the fire then spread to neighboring houses.

Brilliant!

The homeowner, Gene Cranick, said he offered to pay whatever it would take for firefighters to put out the flames, but was told it was too late.

They wouldn’t do anything to stop his house from burning.

Each year, Obion County residents must pay $75 if they want fire protection from the city of South Fulton. But the Cranicks did not pay.

The mayor said if homeowners don’t pay, they’re out of luck.

I am sure a lot of people would prefer not to contribute to our 600 billion annual military budget and would prefer to have their contribution routed to something they needed or supported.

Why should people not have a say in where their money should go?
So poor people should suffer for being poor. Where's the mobility in that kind of system?

Wouldn't crime sky rocket in low income communities were the majority of families cannot afford the police tab? How would someone from a low income family who cannot afford schooling, security, or much more then food clothes or shelter be able to make there way out of that. Not saying the current system fixes these problems. But does your solution make this kind of situation better or worse?

I realize there's millions of people in this country who hate poor people and wish they'd just disappear from the face of the planet... but passing legislation to try to make that happen is disgusting.

Yes, some people are poor because of their own inaction or lack of motivation. Some low income people take advantage of the system to live on food stamps and public support. But realize, the majority of people who depend on these services depend on them only when they're most in need, and DO NOT "take advantage" of the system. The majority of these people are not on drugs, and are working (usually for minimum wage or close to it) to support their families. The food stamp program cost the federal government $56 billion in fiscal 2009. The federal Government Accountability Office estimates that underreported corporate income taxes and employment taxes cost the federal government $84 billion in 2001. That's a full $28 billion MORE than the ENTIRE food stamp program cost in the midst of a recession.
And just to put everything in perspective, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will have cost us $2.4 TRILLION by 2017 - that's an average of $160 billion every year since 2003.

The poor are not the problem in this country, they're just an easy target for people to attack... Legislate against and finally start putting a STOP to corporate fraud, and END ALL INVOLVEMENT IN FOREIGN CONFLICT and we'll finally start seeing real change.
