it's basically how the HWs were going to pan out, but they're calling it a tournament to make it interesting. Overeem vs. Werdum was going to be the next title fight, and they're fighting in the first round. Fedor vs. Bigfoot was going to be for the #1 contender, and they face the winner of the title fight. Then whoever wins the other bracket will be the new #1 contender.
I got Fedor winning it, but I'm rooting for Sergei always.

I'm pretty sure the title's on the line in Reem's fight(s).
So Overeem's fights are gonna be 5 rounds and everyone else gets to fight 3 rounds in the same tournament? I'd much rather ALL the tournament fights be 5 rounders for the greater good.

I'm a fan of tournaments that ensure that top fighters get in the ring against each other.

yes i read that overeems fights will be 5 rounds and for the title.
That's kind of wack. If you're gonna call it a tournament and hype it up as that then it should be level straight across the board. If Overeem/Werdum have to fight 5 rounds in the 1st round of the tourney then so should everyone else no matter the situation. It should be consistent anyway you do it plus the fact that I think every fight between higher level fighters should be 5 rounds..

Its pretty much not a tournament, but how strike force was going to set up the fights, anyway. Maybe the weak bracket is a tournament for the ultimate number one contender.. Its pretty much Overeem and the number one contender fighting for the belt, which was supposed to happen.. Then there other two best fighters fighting to see who will fight for the belt. Then on the other side, i guess you could see it as a 4 man tournament to decide the eventual #1 contender..

But I'm interested to see what will happen if Reem ends up pulling out of this at some point.

And I'm betting if anybody from the good side of the bracket gets hurt, they'll wait it out for them to heel up. But on the other side, they'll use there replacements.

Like if Reem or Fedor get hurt in victories, they aren't gonna replace one of them in that match with a very low level heavyweight.

its definitely odd but it will be nice to see a sf event with someone other than scott smith or the other 4-5 fighters who are always on the cards fight

IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY (NOT THAT IT MATTERS) BUT OVEREEM WAS BEATEN BY WERDUM AND KHARITONOV BEFORE. THIS IS THE SHIT THE UFC SHOULD BE DOING.

Strikeforce posted this on facebook:

"All heavyweight tournament fights other than the finals are three rounds and Alistair Overeem's title will not be on the line. The tourney winner then fights for the SF title."

aw that's gay, they got fucked over by the commissions. They were trying to get 5 rounds for every fight in the tournament, Jersey was going to let them do it but they needed to talk to the commissions in the other states the tourney was going to be in. Wonder if that means they'll make Reem vacate the belt if he loses

So now Overeem will have to give up his belt if he loses a non-title fight. What can make it worse is that he can lose a 3 round decision (unlikely that many of the fights go to decision, but still) and have to give up the belt.

And yet another twist to the HW tourny. (sort of)

Strikeforce Shifts Gears: Overeem’s Belt Safe, Tourney Fights Three Rounds | MMAWeekly.com

Strikeforce Shifts Gears: Overeem’s Belt Safe, Tourney Fights Three Rounds

Strikeforce, on a media conference call on Thursday, formalized plans for its eight-man Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament.

Company CEO Scott Coker, in an initial interview with MMAWeekly.com last week, had hoped to make all bouts in the tournament five five-minute rounds with heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem’s belt at risk throughout the tournament.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker
“The goal is to have Alistair put up his belt against Fabricio Werdum. If Werdum wins, then he will have to put up the belt, but at the end, you will have one champion,” Coker said.

That was the goal, but Coker also said that they had to make sure that their plans worked in conjunction with the state athletic commissions that will oversee the multi-event tournament. The various rounds of the tournament will be split amongst separate events in various locations.

Of chief concern to Strikeforce was the number of rounds for each of the bouts if the title were at risk through the tournament.

“We’re working with the athletic commissions because of the round issue,” Coker told MMAWeekly.com. Most commissions deem title fights five-round bouts; non-title fights are typically three rounds.

That proved to be the point where Strikeforce shifted gears and decided not to put Overeem’s title on the line in the Grand Prix.

“We just didn’t feel like it would be fair for one fight to be three rounds, one fight to be five rounds,” Coker said on Thursday.

He pointed out that, over the course of the tournament, Strikeforce could end up working with as many as six different commissions.

“We would have to have all those commissions on the same page and we just couldn’t do it,” he added.

So the tournament is set to be three five-minute rounds per fight up until the final bout, which will be a five-round championship fight.

If any fight is ruled a draw, there will be a fourth judge that will determine which fighter should continue on in the tournament. As well, if a fighter cannot continue on in the tournament due to injury or other circumstances, a five-person Strikeforce committee, headed up by Strikeforce rules director Cory Schafer, will determine a replacement from reserve bout winners and eliminated tournament fighters.

The winner of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix will be the tournament champion and challenge Overeem for the Strikeforce heavyweight title. If Overeem makes it through the tournament, then his belt will be on the line in final with the winner declared both the Strikeforce heavyweight champion and Grand Prix tournament champion.

Now the only issue this can cause is this. What if Overeem loses and the guy he loses to does not win the tournament?

I understand that the tournament winner will fight Overeem regardless but that will be sort of odd. If Werdum were to beat Overeem then lose to whoever that will be kind of odd, to beat the champ but not get the belt and lose your chance at fighting for the belt.

Hopefully Overeem makes it to the finale and this whole thing will be moot. How about if Fedor beats Overeem and wins the torunament, that means Fedor would have to fight Overeem a second time. What if the person who beats overeem gets injured.
I think I just brought up too many "what if's". I have high hopes for this tournament but I just see so many ways that it can go south real quick.

yes this is the way it should be! although i still would prefer overeem just sitting back at the throne and getting the winner of this crazy tournament it shows that he does want to be the best in the world! wonder if the winner will get a belt like K-1 or a trophy or both!

The winner is going to fight Overeem for the StrikeForce HW belt, even if Overeem loses in his first fight in the tournament.

The winner's getting a GP belt. It's going to be like the old Pride tourneys/the way K-1 is now, with divisional champs and Grand Prix champs. For instance, Fedor could win the grand prix and he'd be the GP champ, but Reem would still be the heavyweight champ until they fight outside of the tournament.
And supposedly they're going to do GPs for the other weight classes too. Would be crazy if they started a lightweight one by the end of the year, with twice as many fighters.
