PSP Phone file patent from 2006 revealed

A PSP phone patent application that Sony filed back in 2006 has been unearthed. It looks a bit like the DS and the application says it has a full touchscreen that could emulate the fascia set-up of the PSP, that is "complete with haptic tactile feedback to give the simulated buttons some definition during use."

Other details indicate that Sony Ericsson was thinking of making use of such a touchscreen-focused device to deliver unique Walkman, Cyber-shot and internet browsing interfaces to a mobile, too.

So effectively what we're talking about here is Sony Ericsson's take on the iPhone with a PSP thrown in.

What's particularly interesting is that the patent predates the iPhone patent being made public by one week, meaning the company had a chance at being remembered in history as launching a revolutionary touchscreen mobile phone before Apple. That's if it had bothered to go to market with the product, obviously.

heres what the patent looks like:

this whole psp phone thing links to the power of the ps3. if you watch any of the phil harrison presentations from e3 last year, he talks about how much "HOME" is gonna work with a lot of the PS3 owners. the psp phone is gonna be sick, youll be able to take a picture on your phone, and it will show up on your ps3. You can take a picture in new york and it will show up on your ps3 in california. its has some other shit too, you really gotta pay attention to phil harrison presentation tho to get a good idea how sony is moving .

sony ericsson phones are clean. i just got the cyber shot k810i and its fuckin wet! but im gonna sell it soon to get the new sony ericsson xperia.

More PlayStation Phone Photos Leaked

At this point we've witnessed all but an official confirmation and formal introduction of Sony Ericsson's forthcoming PlayStation Phone, including insider leaks, videos, and off-hand comments from Sony execs, but now a new set of photos have been leaked for our collective viewing pleasure.

Posted on a Chinese forum, HKGolden, and discovered by Engadget, the photos depict not one, but two of the rumored smartphones. Unlike previous leaks, however, the devices pictured are in clear view and seem to be nearer to production-grade prototypes. The two models shown sport the slider-style game pad with a PSP-style d-pad and action buttons, but gives a closer look at the touch-enabled slider, which given the rounded etchings seems to be intended to service dual analog controls.

Most notably, the device now displays clear Sony Ericsson's Xperia series branding, as well as a small PlayStation Store logo in the lower left corner. The emphasis on Xperia and not PlayStation branding, adds support for rumors suggesting the device won't be considered an official PlayStation product but rather a device that supports certain crossover games or downloadable PSP software.

he photos also show a close-up on a readout of the phone's main specs, displaying that the current operating system build used is none other than Google Android 2.3.

There are still many questions to be answered, but hopefully we'll be hearing more about the fabled device sooner rather than later, with the device perhaps making its public debut at Sony's press conference at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) tomorrow at 5pm PST in Las Vegas.

I have the LG Quantum Windows Phone 7 and the Xbox games on that phone are good and it's nice to be able to earn achievments on the go. Xbox mobile games have a touch screen joystick which works pretty good.
