Flynn, Jones, Robinson signed
Matt Flynn, Jason Jones and Michael Robinson have officially signed with the Seahawks, as the club now has the contracts that these players agreed to last week and over the weekend.
Flynn, a backup quarterback from the Packers, agreed to terms on Sunday and will compete for the Seahawks’ starting job with Tarvaris Jackson. Jones, a defensive lineman who played the past four seasons with the Titans, agreed to terms on Saturday and will help provide the inside pass rush that coach Pete Carroll was seeking to add to the defense. Robinson, a Pro Bowl fullback, agreed to terms with the Seahawks on Friday.
The club also has retained four other players: running back Marshawn Lynch, offensive linemen Breno Giacomini and Paul McQuistan and linebacker Heath Farwell.
It’s a mix of “keeping our own” and adding to the competition with others that Carroll and general manager John Schneider established as their preferred approach entering the free agency period.
“Free agency for us was to get our own guys – that was the start of it,” Carroll said. “The fact that we were able to do that with Marshawn and come back with Red, Mike Robinson and on down the line, this has been really important to us.”
That other free agent
The Seahawks got agreements from two free agents over the weekend – quarterback Matt Flynn, who got most of the attention; and defensive tackle Jason Jones.
But the Seahawks have plans for Jones, who spent the past four seasons with the Titans and agreed to terms with the Seattle on Saturday.
“This is an exciting acquisition for us,” coach Pete Carroll said today, during a conference call interview to discuss Flynn. “We really have needed since the day we got here an inside pass-rush ability. Jason has unusual quickness for a long, tall guy and has a good knack for rushing inside.”
The 6-foot-5, 276-pound Jones registered 15.5 sacks and forced seven fumbles for Titans, but moved to end last season after playing tackle in his first three seasons. He will play some situational end for the Seahawks, but Carroll envisions him making the biggest impact at tackle.
“We’re hoping that we can really feature him in all of our nickel package stuff and also fit him in to other situations that will suit him,” Carroll said. “He’s got big-play ability in him. He attacks the football really well. He forces fumbles. He knocks down passes. And he’s got an activity about him that we think really cam help us and enhance our pass rush that needs to continue to grow.”
The Seahawks had 33 sacks last season, but 11 came from “Leo” end Chris Clemons. The rest of the linemen combined for 10 sacks, and the tackles had four.
“This is a big area for us to improve in and Jason will help us,” Carroll said.
