Looking for 'running' room
After playing six of their first 10 games on the road, the Seahawks are exciting about the opportunity to make a run by playing their next three games at CenturyLink Field.
The Seahawks have won back-to-back games to open the second half of their season and now are looking at playing their next three games at home against opponents who have a combined nine victories.
Yes, you’re supposed to take them one game at a time, but even coach Pete Carroll can’t help but ponder the possibilities with the 3-7 Washington Redskins, 4-6 Philadelphia Eagles and 2-8 St. Louis Rams coming to the XX-large home-field advantage that is CenturyLink Field in a 16-day span.
“I like the way you’re talking. That sounds good,” Carroll said Monday during his weekly day-after news conference when the 2-0/three-in-a-row scenario was presented.
“It’s great to know that we’re going to be home for three weeks. It just has not felt like we’ve had that sense of playing at home with any kind of consistency.”
That’s because the 4-6 Seahawks haven’t. They opened the season with back-to-back road game and then played two in a row at home before playing three of their next four on the road. They’ve already made three trips into the Eastern time zone, as well as another to Dallas.
Now comes the reward: The team’s first three-game “home stand” since 2004, when Mike Holmgren was coaching the Seahawk and Carroll was dominating the college football world as the coach at USC.
That the games are against teams with losing records makes it all the better, as the Seahawks look to win three in a row for the first time since a five-game winning streak in 2007. That two of the games will be nationally televised makes it even better, as they’ll face the Eagles on Thursday night (Dec. 1) and the Rams on Monday night (Dec. 12).
It’s a chance for the Seahawks to show the football-watching world that they are an improving football team in “highlighted games,” as Carroll called them.
“That will be really exciting when the time comes,” he said. “But just that fact that we’re around here; it’s a very good feeling for everybody.”
His players definitely are feeling it, especially after their feel-good effort in St. Louis on Sunday, when the beat the Rams 24-7.
“We’ve got three games at home, we’ve just got to take those one at a time and just see how everything goes after that,” nose tackle Brandon Mebane said after Sunday’s game. “But we’re definitely excited about the opportunity to get on a little run here.”
Carroll’s onboard, as well.
“This is a big deal,” he said. “This weekend is. If we can get off to a good start on a three-week roll here, it will be really cool.”
