Also they have studyed corked bats, and they dont make the ball go further!! It doesnt do shit, but its a psychological thing!!!
the actual cork itself doesnt make the ball go further, but it does make a difference..

and here is how when a bat is corked the very lightweight cork replaces heavy solid wood which makes the bat alote lighter and in turn generates alote more bat speed.

and faster bat speed is known to make the balls travel farther

Corked-bat mistake happened to me once
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Joe Morgan
Special to ESPN.com

For all those who jumped to conclusions after Sammy Sosa was caught with a corked bat, it looks like Sosa's explanation was more correct than their accusations.

Sosa said he used the corked bat only for batting practice and picked it up by mistake in Tuesday night's game. Since then, all 76 of Sosa's bats that were confiscated after the incident have been X-rayed and found to be completely cork-free.

Moreover, the five bats Sosa has given to the Baseball Hall of Fame were X-rayed by us at the Hall (I'm the vice chairman of the Hall) and also found to be clean. These are the bats he used in achieving milestones such as his 500th home run.

Sosa's accomplishments should not be tarnished by this one incident, according to the statement released Thursday by the Hall. Some writers have suggested that Sosa's Hall credentials should now be questioned. I disagree with that. Sosa should be punished, but it hasn't been proved that this is anything more than an isolated incident.

Since Sosa's bats were demonstrated to be clean, I accept his explanation. In fact, I understand how a batter could use a corked bat by mistake -- because it happened to me once.

I had two or three corked bats, made for me by a carpenter, that I used for batting practice when I played with the San Francisco Giants in 1981. We used them because the cold conditions made our hands hurt during BP. The corked bat would soften the sting and protect your hands. I also used aluminum bats during batting practice, for the same reason.

One day, I forgot to take the corked bats back to my clubhouse locker after BP. During the game, one of my bats broke, and the bat boy brought a couple of other bats to me. I just grabbed one, because all my bats were the same. After I hit a fly ball to right field, I thought, "That didn't feel right." I went back to look at the bat, and sure enough -- it was the corked bat I had used in BP and forgotten to put away.

What bothered me was that I could have used it accidentally that one time and it could have broken in two, as happened with Sosa. To me, the consequences were too great. So after that, I went back to using my regular bats for BP. As I recall, the clubhouse guy threw the corked bats away for me.

By the way, there's a debate about whether a corked bat actually causes a batted ball to travel farther. My experience was that corked bats did not make the ball go farther -- at least they didn't help me. I agree with ESPN analyst Bobby Valentine on this issue.

I also agree with ESPN analyst Harold Reynolds that it's possible that a corked-bat event like Sosa's could simply be a mistake. It isn't probable, but it's possible. I know, because it happened to me.

Mcleanhatch: Good shit for breakin' it down about the cork. Czar, you shouldn't believe everything you hear on T.V., like you said, everyone has their opinions, even those funny sports guys' on the tube. I think he WAS using some illegal suppliment and this corked bat is going to tarnish his name to some extent even more. Its nothing like what Joe Jackson went through, but it will linger over his name for some time. I changed this post after reading Mclean's second post and after all that, I think that will help subside all this madness. Im sure it might be one he used in practivce, but I don't think picking it up was an accident.

There's a difference. I will tell you a player is good because I watch him play on T.V., I will not tell you he is good because someone on T.V. said so. Maybe that will give you better knowlegdge of what I meant. Using someone's opinion on television is not wrong, I do it all the time, but to base your opinion on someone else's hardly proves to be a good decision.

it didnt make a difference for him (morgan) but as it has been stated before lighter bats make for farther hits simply because a player can generate alote more bat speed.

that is why bat companies keep making their bats lighter and lighter because of bat speed that is generated from a lighter bat.

it does mean more power but indirectly,

the cork itself does not make for more power

the lighter the bat the farther the hit ball goes.

because they buy the bats before the season starts and they buy a about 100 bats at a time. so they can last the entire season. i dont know for sure but i heard somewhere that a an MLB used personal bats lasts about 4 or 5 games before the player either breaks it or replaces it with a new bat.

i mean look at teams like Blue Jays or Red Sox that have to play against rivera and the Yankess 19 times per season. how many bats do you think are broken batting agaisnt Mariano Rivera.

I never said you said that. I was making an example of how you used someones opinion on a subject to base your opinion on rather then what you saw. That is why I said "Maybe that will give you better knowlegdge of what I meant." I never make a point that doesn't need to me made, your intelligence level just can't understand them.

SOSA'S A HOG ON THE FIELD,FUCK THAT CORK SHIT.WILTON GUERRERO HAD A CORKED BAT AND ONLY HIT 3 HOME RUNS WITH IT,A CORKED BAT DOESNT EQUAL HOMERUNS.WHAT THEY SHOULD BE CHECKING FOR IS PLAYERS ON STEROIDS LIKE BONDS OR JUICED UP BASEBALLS BY THE MLB TO BOOST UP LOW RATING AND LOW ATTENDANCE AT GAMES,THATS THE REAL REASON FOR ALL THESE HOMERUNS.

First of all,you guys act like they put a ton of a cork inside the bat,NOT TRUE.The weight differential is very minimal between a corked, and uncorked bat.It may give a slight advantage in bat speed, but at the same time, you are changing the sweet spot of the bat. There have been tests done, and a normal bat that hits a ball 400ft.,would travel only 403ft. with a corked bat.

For homie who said he don't remember him breaking a bat,the year he hit 66,well I assure you he broke several dozen bats throughout the year.Sosa would have a better shot hitting the Lotto back 2 back, than going a season w/o breaking atleast 10 bats.Either way,he was caught with one,but I don't think this will change the minds of knowledgable baseball fans(who've played the game),but it will make a difference to the average baseball fantasy guy,who doesn't like the fact Sosa is as good as Bonds and McGwire.Corked or not, everyone knows he could hit 40+ with a tree branch.Steroids is a whole different story.IE,Bonds,Sosa,J.Gonzales,McGwire etc......
