U.S. 71 reopens after 90-minute delay
By CHRISTINE VENDEL The Kansas City Star
Kansas City police have reopened the northbound lanes of U.S. 71, which had been closed since 11 a.m. today so investigators could search for evidence related to a homicide.
The lanes reopened just before 12:30 p.m.
The highway was closed from 85th Street to 75th Street. Motorists were forced to exit at 85th Street and go west to Prospect Avenue, north to 75th Street, then east and get back on U.S. 71.
Homicide investigators were looking for shell casings and other evidence related to the killing of a California rap artist about 3:30 a.m. Monday along U.S. 71.
The rapper, Andre Hicks, 34, was traveling in a van with a friend northbound on U.S. 71 north of 85th Street when a vehicle pulled up and an occupant began shooting. The vehicle bumped into the van, which careened across the highway median, across the southbound lanes of traffic and down a steep embankment.
Hicks suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and was thrown from the van. The driver crawled out of the van and walked to summon help.
Officers collected evidence from the crash site Monday, but wanted to search for evidence on the northbound side, where the shooting occurred. Police said they have no motive in the killing.
Hicks, who was known as Mac Dre, was in town for a concert last Friday in Kansas City, Kan. Police said he lived in Sacramento.
RIP MAC MUTHAPHUCKIN DRE!!!! You will be severly missed. May God bless your soul and may he comfort and ease your family's pain and sorrow.
