Yeah, Venezuela is a model for free press. You must know about the hundreds of media outlets Chavez shut down or squeezed out over the years. All of the privately owned outlets live in fear knowing that if they publish dissenting stories they could be next.

Take RCTV for example. They were the #2 TV station. Staunchly anti chavez and funded by opposition parties. They participated in the 2002 coup that attempted to overthrow Chavez! If Chavez was a tyrant these traitors would have been imprisoned or killed. But they were allowed to continue to run there programming until 2006 when their license expired. Their license was simply not renewed and they moved over to cable TV (similar to being like CNN or Fox News). Of course the reports in America were "Chavez shuts down TV stations!" So I ask you, who's media is lying to the people??
There were also some radio stations that were operating illegally that where shut down. In America if some pirate radio station was broadcasting from the radio towers they too would be shut down. But again American media says, "Chavez shuts down radio stations, no freedom of speech!" Lol its comical.

I mean really, imagine there was a planned coup in America to forcibly overthrow Obama and lets say for shits and giggles the Tea Party was being funded by a government of a foreign country. Then Fox News actively participates in this coup that ultimately fails. What do you think would happen to Fox News? There would be serious charges against those involved without question.

Owning and controlling are different. You paint a rosy view of his influence on the media. I disagree that anyone but him have benefitted from his reforms in that area.
He may have been a "champion of the people" like you say. I doubt it but it doesn't even matter. What matters is that his socialist policies will ultimately fail when they collapse under their own weight. Soon the country will no longer be able to afford the freebies. The people will get used to being coddled from cradle to grave and they'll lose any incentive to be independently successful. Entrepreneurs, investors, and business people will flee to countries with freer markets. The economy will tank as businesses disappear and dependence on government will continue to increase.

They have a massive amount of oil that is paying for all of this stuff though, not to mention they nationalized a number of industries and redistributed the farming land to the poor, which brought it billions of dollars in revenue they weren't making prior to chavez. Sounds like you don't really know what you're talking about, no disrespect.

Apparently more than you realize. Well over 2 million have already paid respects to Chavez and they are still seeing him (they are allowing 40 people per minute).
