hy do you need to know why they are in the ring to enjoy a match?
I can give credit to a good match or a few decent moves, but I'm not going to tune in weekly and watch two random guys fake fight for no fucking reason. I mean, what you're saying, and going past the Batman thing, is that any show/movie/comic book does not need any type of story arch, whatsoever... so long as the resolution is filmed correctly. Essentially, you're suggesting we watch the end of every movie, the end of every show, read the last chapter of every book, the last act of every play, and if it's good enough we should be satisfied.
The rest is just semantics.
I don't understand your logic.
I'll say that yeah, a storyline isn't going to make a match any better, but it'll sure put my ass in the seat in the first place. And if you can't get my ass in the seat in the first place, then why have the match at all? And a good storyline can make a shitty match seem ten times better. Lets say I have an emotional attachment to a certain storyline, and the heel comes out and beats the shit out of the face with a weapon. I can't remember who it was, perhaps Rick Martel or Savage who beat the shit out of a then injured Roddy Piper with his own crutch. It was early 90's, I don't remember.
That isn't a good wrestling match... But if you feel for an injured Piper and you're watching someone further injure the dude... You're LOCKED THE FUCK IN (at least I was when I was a kid). Now that you've seen that shit (the story), even if Piper gets his revenge with one fuckin' chair shot, you flip the fuck out. I don't need to see Piper and Savage fight for a half hour with 10 minute arm bars to be satisfied.
