One of the big casting surprises of the year came early on, when it was announced that Tom Hardy would play Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. The character is known to hard-core fans as a smart, cunning adversary to Batman, but many see Bane only as a drug-fed musclebound gorilla in a Luchador mask. (Which is exactly what he was in a brief appearance in Joel Schumacher’s Batman and Robin.)
Now Tom Hardy has spoken briefly about the role. The fact that he says this Bane will be rather different will probably (not) shock you to your very core.
The DailyBlam relates that the actor appeared on Alan Carr’s show in the UK. (The episode is not yet online, but will likely be available after the show repeats on Wednesday.) The site transcribed the portion of the conversation that pertains to The Dark Knight Rises. After a bit of joking about Batman and Robin, Mr. Hardy is asked if he’ll have to wear Bane’s ‘gimp mask,’ and replies,
Well, only if I feel like it. No. Again Chris Nolan will revisit that territory entirely. I wouldn’t go by that at all. Plus, that’s a lot of weight to put on and I’ve gotta start shooting in May so I’m gonna go pack up to about 13 – 14 stone [198 lbs]. I’m 12 [168 lbs] and a bit now so I’ve got 3 months to do that.
Not the most revealing quote, exactly, especially as it really does little more than echo what anyone who has seen the last two Christopher Nolan Batman films had already assumed: namely, that his version of Bane would not be anything like Joel Schumacher’s. Good to have it firmly stated by the actor, though.
Bane will be a fucking legend with his near 200lb. physique and no mask, brehs.

New ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Rumors Surface Regarding Catwoman, Talia Al’Ghul and Bane

Posted on Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011 by Germain Lussier

Though there’s very little real, legitimate information out there on The Dark Knight Rises, it’s not for lack of trying. Tons of journalists lucky enough to attend the Oscars this past weekend spoke to cast members Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway and even director Christopher Nolan and got little to nothing in terms of news. Hathaway told Oprah she be playing Catwoman, but that’s about it.
Still, the film is slowly coming together and as production ramps up, more and more information will leak out. Case in point, Badass Digest has what they think is legitimate information regarding how all of the official (Tom Hardy as Bane, Hathaway as Catwoman) and unofficial (Joseph Gordon-Levitt possibly as several people, Marion Cotillard possibly as Talia Al’Ghul) actors and characters fit into the story. Check it out and speculate after the break.
If you are trying to stay spoiler free for Batman 3, then you probably shouldn’t read what’s about to be said because it could be considered major spoilers.
Here’s what a “good source” told Badass Digest:
Anne Hathaway will be Catwoman in the movie. I can’t tell you what role she has in the beginning, but by the end of the story Catwoman isn’t a villain but rather an ally of Batman. And who are they teaming up to take out? The League of Shadows. Headed by Talia Al’Ghul. With Bane, who is her muscle/possible love interest. And with Joseph Gordon-Levitt in tow. Is he playing Black Mask? My source didn’t know, but did know that Levitt is certainly an antagonist and involved with the League of Shadows.
The article goes on to remind us that, much like the League of Shadows, Nolan and his team are masters of deception (or is it Inception) and could just be perpetrating false rumors or placing ideas in our minds. Plus the source, reportedly, only knows part of the story. Still, this makes total and complete sense both with the character’s that have been announced and the people we’ve met in the previous films.
Let the speculation begin.

Aaron Eckhart just alluded to Two-Face returning in some fashion.

It's fun to speculate, isn't it? The only evidence we really have is that Aaron Eckhart has met several times with director Christopher Nolan, but he never said those meetings were for The Dark Knight Rises. Now comes this interview segment from CBS in which he's asked directly if we'll ever see Harvey Dent again, be it "in a flash back or someone's imagination." Eckhart responds with a smile and says, "I could not possibly say."

I don't care, honestly. It's not about the marketability for me, it's the story Nolan created and the world he wrapped it in that I'm interested in remaining in tact.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Set for ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ Juno Temple Possibly Cast, Too

Posted on Friday, March 18th, 2011 by Russ Fischer

Briefly: Some minor news on The Dark Knight Rises: Variety says that, after being in talks for some time, and linked to the film almost since day one, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is confirmed for the film. That’s not a big scoop, as there seemed like virtually no chance that he wouldn’t end up in the film. We still don’t have a character name — he’s been rumored for quite a few possible parts, including Alberto Falcone and (much more vaguely) even Robin.
And the trade also says that Juno Temple is being eyed for ” a supporting role as a street-smart Gotham girl.” She’d be a welcome presence in the film, but until something is more solid on that front we’ll wait before considering her official a part of the cast.
The characters they're adding are really starting to remind me of my point about this film being similar to The Dark Knight Returns.

On Friday, Variety reported that Inception co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt had closed a deal to re-team with director Christopher Nolan for The Dark Knight Rises. The trade has since updated their article with who he will play in the anticipated film:

Speculation has run rampant regarding the role, with blogs pegging the part as The Riddler or Deadshot, but insiders tell Variety that Gordon-Levitt will be playing Alberto Falcone, the son of Mafia chieftain Carmine Falcone, the character Tom Wilkinson played in "Batman Begins."

Filming for the movie is set to kick-off soon. Warner Bros. Pictures is planning a July 20

I wouldn't hold Nolan to anything he says pre-production.

He hasn't said that Holiday isn't in this, though. The Long Halloween and Dark Victory come to mind now.

LOL Once again, don't rule out anybody.

‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Ending Not Printed in Production Script

Posted on Monday, March 28th, 2011 by Peter Sciretta

At the Empire Awards, Gary Oldman talked to Absolute Radio about The Dark Knight Rises. As you might expect, he was very vague in his responses, and didn’t reveal too many details. Oldman did say that he has read the script, and that “It’s a really great story, a great script — he’s outdone himself from The Dark Knight!” He also talked about the extreme measures that Christopher Nolan takes to keep the script secret. For example, the ending isn’t printed in the shooting script — you won’t find it anywhere!

Oldman told Absolute Radio:
“To get into the production office, you have to have someone meet you and there are keys and various doors that lock. The script you read in the production office, and there is no ending because [Nolan] tells you the ending so that it doesn’t leak and get out, and people spoil it on the internet.”
Oldman also confirms that the film completes a trilogy and somehow connects with the original film, Batman Begins:
“He sort of brings it back… he brings it around.”
