Raiders finally come to pass

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, May 26th, 2010 at 2:05 pm in Oakland Raiders.

You’ve been reading in this space for the better part of the last four years about the worst passing game in the NFL.

The Raiders’ in inability to catch the ball was exceeded only by their ineffectiveness when it came to throwing it.

Poor timing. Bad routes. More footballs on the ground than eggs on Easter Sunday.

I’ve written about it for the last four training camps as well as most OTAs and minicamps. Then the Raiders would live down to expectations and show that practice does indeed make for imperfections.

So it’s worth taking note when things go well, simply because it hasn’t happened that often.

Yes, Wednesday’s practice was a mere “organized team activity.” No pads, no hard contact. But that never stopped the Raiders from having bad practices before.

With quarterback Jason Campbell getting most of the work (the company line will be about training camp competition, but the only way he doesn’t start is because of injury), the Raiders, with offensive coordinator Hue Jackson challenging his offense and talking trash to the defense, actually put a legitimate NFL passing game on the field.

(Quick admission _ my car broke down close to home, and I had to get it towed to a shop. Got back home and took another vehicle to practice and arrived late, but was told I saw most of the team sessions).

“I’ve seen how far we’ve come as an offense, and we’re much better and guys are developing,” tight end Zach Miller said. “I mean, just watching him, Heyward-Bey has been phenomenal out here. He’s matured a lot and I’m really looking forward to seeing what kind of season he’s going to have.”

Indeed, Heyward-Bey was the best receiver on the field Wednesday (Chaz Schilens remains a spectator recovering from foot surgery). He caught everything thrown his way and if he even bobbled the ball once, I didn’t see it.

Most of the routes were shallow to medium depth _ he never got well downfield for a catch. But he accelerated into shallow crosses and then smoothly turned up field for gains. He made a catch on Nnamdi Asomugha and left him in the dust with a spin move for extra yards.

“Today was a really good practice for him,” Asomugha said. “That’s the best practice I’ve seen from him here. Last week we went through OTAs and he was doing a little better, I guess, there was some inconsistency.

“But today was a good day for him to build off of and see how he comes out tomorrow. It’s days like this you want to keep stringing along. You don’t want to fall back after a day like this. He was catching the ball. I don’t know that he dropped a ball. Caught maybe eight or nine, so that was good for him.”

After one red zone score, Heyward-Bey was greeted in the end zone by Louis Murphy and Tony Stewart for a three-way celebration.

Heyward-Bey, whose style is to let the failures roll off his back, sounds pretty much the same after success. Not a lot of emotion or I-told-you-sos.

“We’re just competing out here,” Heyward-Bey said. “That’s something Hue has brought in, competing against each other, wide receivers, O-line, running backs, going at the DBs. It’s fun. We have a good practice, we let them know. They have a good practice, they let us know.”

Said coach Tom Cable: “Darrius was really on today. But I thought a lot of things went in to that. I thought the quarterbacks threw him a lot of balls on time. He caught the ball well, made a move with after the catch, which I thought was most impressive. It was a very good day for him.”

More news, notes and quotes:

– Players who were present but were not practicing because of injury or illness included defensive end Matt Shaughnessy, wide receiver Phil Hubbard, linebacker Isaiah Ekejiuba, Schilens and quarterback Bruce Gradkowski.

Richard Seymour was not present, having not signed his exclusive franchise tender. Tommy Kelly and Chris Johnson were not present and were “excused,” according to Cable, assuming there is such a thing in a voluntary workout.

– As a way of putting the pressure on his receivers, Jackson is directly challenging defenders _ and a frequent target is Asomugha.

“Every day and every snap,” Asomugha said. “I think I’m his enemy for some reason, his nemesis or something. I played him in Cincinnati a few times. I played him in Baltimore. We have fun with it. It is fun, fun for him. He likes doing it. Me, I just tune him out.”

Jackson rode Asomugha particularly hard when the less-than-mercurial Luke Lawton got around him following a swing pass reception from Campbell.

Asomugha can see the method in the madness.

“They need the confidence to say they’re going to go out and catch the ball every single snap. And he’s got the confidence so I guess if you can say it enough times, it can kind of leak into the receiver’s minds, too,” Asomugha said.”

– Miller on Jackson: “He’ll call them out _ even where the ball is going sometimes. He’s challenging our offense to be aggressive, be dominating. He won’t accept anything else.”

– Murphy on Jackson: He’s going to tell the defense where the ball is going and it forces us to make a play. It puts a little pressure on us. It’s great, man.”

– Interesting Asomugha comment on the development of the offense: “I don’t think it’s the new plays. We always had all these plays. It’s just that now we’re running them. Last year they were taking more time on their basic plays whereas now he’s going straight into everything and it’s helping them out.”

Translation _ JaMarcus Russell’s lack of dedication resulted caused the Raiders to dumb down the system.

– Bruce Campbell, the fourth-round pick at Maryland who played left tackle in college, conceded his transition to right guard (for now) has been a struggle.

“I was a left tackle, now I’m playing right guard,” Campbell said. “It’s a totally different experience. I’m used to space on the outside. Now I’m on the inside with a lot of help. People would say it’s easier, but I don’t see it being easier right now.”

Steward: If Al Davis can take back $9.55M from JaMarcus Russell, why not others?
By Carl Steward
Oakland Tribune columnist

Darting here and there ...

ı So that's all the Raiders are trying to recover from JaMarcus Russell, $9.55 million? If they were taking this before Judge Judy, it would be at least three times that, and they'd probably get it. But with the NFL? Zippo.

ı As a poster to Jerry McDonald's Inside The Raiders blog noted, that amount probably doesn't even recoup Russell's team cafeteria expenses. Good one.

ı Sad fact is, the money was guaranteed, so Al Davis is doing nothing more than wasting more money trying to chase it. Then again, if it paints Al in a sympathetic light, maybe it's worth the lost cause.

ı It's just a shame we don't get a chance to see this $9.55 mil itemized on Al's overhead projector. That's always the most fun part.

ı If the Raiders do reclaim the cash, is there a statute of limitations, or could they go after some of the big dough they once paid to Larry Brown?

ı Darrius Heyward-Bey supposedly had his most impressive practice as a Raider this week with new quarterback Jason Campbell winging it to him. Wonderful. Twitter us when he does it in a game.

A few points on Russell

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, May 27th, 2010 at 6:20 pm in Oakland Raiders.

While Steve Corkran works on the nuts and bolts of the grievance process by the Raiders against quarterback JaMarcus Russell, a few quick observations:

– Now we know why Russell was invited to the mandatory minicamp. The Raiders were hoping he wouldn’t show, because they were contemplating making a move to recover money for some time.

– Turn back the clock to Russell’s contract impasse and Al Davis stating his issues with the process. Davis said the problem was “forfeiture” in the event things went south.

You wonder if Davis was having buyer’s remorse not long after making the selection.

– While I’m of the opinion the Raiders did their part to ensure Russell’s failure because of the Davis-Lane Kiffin feud and the general environment provided a risky talent, they should be applauded for trying to recover as much money as they can. Yahoo Sports reports they want $9.55 million back.

No matter how bad the situation was in Oakland, Russell’s lack of dedication to his craft was inexcusable. If the Raiders discovered a way to add a loophole to the contract during renegotiation which will allow them to recover money, good for them.

– This shouldn’t hurt the Raiders where signing players in the future is concerned. They’ve taken their lumps with poor signings in the past and paid out the money. Russell was simply an extreme case and I’m guessing his former teammates are OK with it.

– The way Russell goes through money, judging from his jewelry, jaunts to Las Vegas and generally lavish spending habits, you wonder if he’ll have $.9.55 million to return to the Raiders if he loses the grievance.

The Raiders are confirming only that the grievance exists and nothing else, releasing a statement from attorney Jeff Birren.

“We have filed a grievance against JaMarcus Russell and that’s all we’re going to say at this time,” Birren said.

– Great moment at the close of practice when Jailen Cooper, age 10, flattened his favorite Raider, Darren McFadden, in the midst of a gauntlet of Raiders chanting his name.

Jailen had surgery to remove a tumor from is pituitary gland in December of 2008 and has undergone a rough road with chemotherapy. His visit was arranged by the Raiders and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Jailen’s mother, Jessie, reports her son is doing fine, a recent MRI showed no tumor and the prognosis is good for a full recovery.

The Raiders sent Jailen a No. 1 jersey with his name on the back and he addressed the media following practice along with Cable. Raiders CEO Amy Trask said there were a lot of lumps in a lot of throats at the reaction of Jailen when he saw a locker which was set up for him in the Raiders’ locker room.
i hate the raiders but that right there is what its all about.
Hats off to the raider family for that classy move...

For what it's worth(stole from a blog):

Check out what Kiper recently had to say about Lamarr Houston:

Kiper: “I’m honestly starting to think I really underrated this guy. I look at the measurables and in terms of combine tests, he’s better almost across the board than Gerald McCoy. But that’s just the athleticism. In terms of tackles for loss he also topped McCoy, playing a similar schedule in the Big 12. He has plenty of size at 6-3, 305 pounds to be a solid part of the Oakland 4-3. If this guy becomes a big impact player early in his career I’ll no longer be surprised. As I look back at what he did, it’s another reason to think I may have undersold what Oakland did in the draft. Houston could be a steal.”

on one hand that's pretty good to hear

on the other hand I think Mel Kiper is an idiot... so I don't value his opinion too much, even when he's saying something good about the Raiders

remember he said Jamarcus Russell was gonna be an elite QB:hurt:

that's not to say Lamarr Houston is gonna be garbage... I think it was a good pick, and hopefully it turns out to be as good of a pick as Kiper is making it out to be

Maybe Jamarcus could win that Hot Dog eating contest....

Far as Houston goes....i think he can be a Richard Seymour type player...i live in Big 12 country (not for long apparently) and i got to see this dude play a lot....he's big and athletic...i see him being able to move inside to DT on passing downs, outside to DE if needed...I think we got a lot of flexibility now just by adding him cuz tha dude is 300 lbs...he's gonna play somewhere and move around just like Seymour

Source: Henderson to sign with Raiders

Former Jaguars defensive tackle John Henderson reached agreement Friday with the Oakland Raiders on a one-year deal, a team source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Friday.

Jacksonville released Henderson in late April just days after the NFL draft.

Oakland had been looking for another defensive tackle after releasing Gerard Warren this offseason.

Henderson, an eight-year veteran, was pursued by a handful of teams.

Henderson, 31, was regarded as one of the best players remaining in the unrestricted free-agent pool. The two-time Pro Bowl defender was released as the Jags continued in the offseason to remake a defense that ranked No. 23 in the league in 2009.

A former University of Tennessee standout, Henderson started in 120 of 124 appearances with the Jaguars. He registered 329 tackles, 29 sacks and eight forced fumbles. But he did not have more than three sacks in any season over the last five years.

Information from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter and ESPN.com senior writer Len Pasquarelli was used in this report.

Damn. I didn't see this. The Raiders are back for real. Talk about adding pieces to the puzzle. If our young players step up we are in business. I have not felt this good about the Raiders in a long time.

^ yup, we're addressing our needs one by one... I love it

I think our defense has potential to be really good

it might take a little time for everything to gel... but with the new linebacking corp and adding Houston and Henderson to the line... it's almost like a whole new defense, with the exception of the DBs

my 2 biggest worries are the wide receivers and the O-line...I think both should be improved... it's just a matter of how much they improve

The long national nightmare of DT John Henderson's lengthy free agency is now over, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Schefter reported on Friday afternoon that the Oakland Raiders have reached an agreement with Henderson on a one-year deal.

Schefter opines that this is a nice late pickup for Oakland, and indeed, adding the sturdy Henderson to a D-line that already includes Richard Seymour should help the Raiders' front seven. Back while Henderson was still on the market, Schefter commented that although the DT appears to have crested from a skills standpoint, "he still can be a force in the middle of some team's defensive line." Matt Williamson of Scouts, Inc. also had a quick take, which you can find below.

In addition to Seymour, Henderson is also joined up front by rookie Lamarr Houston, who Mel Kiper, Jr. thinks was a steal for the Raiders in the draft.
