J Russ's High School on coach on Russell being cut... he says Russell isn't a bust at all... and it's not all his fault for his failures in the NFL

he says he needs people around him to help him out... and he can't be expected to do it all himself... lmfao... gtfoh
You really think the Raiders did not have something to do with it? You are kidding yourself. Russell did not help his cause but the Raiders didn't help much either.

Honestly ....Bustell could have turned himself into something greater....but having players in their team that don't want to win games..that's another downfall for Bustell and the raiders..

I said it from the start..Bustell's biggest problem was his weight...if he could have kept himself in shape ..I think he would have done wonders too..

but hey..it's too late..hopefully the guy redeems himself somewhere else cuz having that "bust halo" above your head it's not cool at all..

I never said the Raiders had nothing to do with it

but seriously... the guy shows up overweight... he sleeps during meetings... he shows almost no interest or passion in football... puts up some of the worst stats we've EVER seen... was noted as being our partying at clubs all the time... it was rumored that he was drinking sippin lean in his free time... he held out his first season because he wanted more money... I could go on....

yeah our receivers weren't great... but he was overthrowing short screen passes that should have been easy to complete

he got sacked a lot, you could put blame on the o-line... but the guy had ZERO pocket presence

he always stared down his receivers... etc... etc...

if we drafted another rookie QB in that class instead if Russell, I bet you he would not have been as bad... even though no other QBs in that class are too great right now (Kolb was in that class right... he might be good... we'll see...) they still would have been better

he got outplayed by our 2nd and 3rd string QBs... same receivers... same o-line... same runningbacks... same coaches... so I don't wanna hear that bullshit about it's not his fault... fuck his fat ass... it IS his fault

he didn't come into a great situation... but he should have made the most out of the situation he was in

I'm not saying it was 100% Russell's fault... but it mostly was his fault... if he would have put in the necessary effort I'm not saying he'd be the next Peyton Manning right now... but there's a good chance he's still be on the team, and would be a halfway decent QB

Russell's high school coach in that video made it sound like it was almost entirely the Raiders fault for not putting a good team around him... he said "he can't do everything himself"

wtf???? he didn't do ANYTHING himself... except overthrow receivers, throw ints, fumble the ball, stand around like a statue and wait to get sacked, and eat more than the rest of the team combined

sorry for the long rant... but I just can't take people defending that asshole... he deserved to be cut... you can't put too much blame on the Raiders here... the biggest mistake they made in regards to Russell was drafting his fat stupid ass int he first place!

oh, and I'll say this... I don't think it matters if we would have had better receivers and a better o-line... he would still be garbage

sure, he'd be a little better... but I don't give a shit... you still need accuracy, you still need to get the ball off in time (your o-line can only block for so long), and you still need to be do things like show up in good physical shape, study film, NOT SLEEP IN MEETINGS...

if you plugged him into any of the top offenses in the NFL, he would make their offenses a lot worse... I garnette it

that's why I'm blaming Russell... there's times when you can look at a guy and say... "well, maybe if he had a better team around him he'd be good... it's not his fault..."

no... fuck that... not with Russell

Yeah, I don't disagree with alot of what you said but the Raiders organization set him up for failure, imo. I am not saying his conduct was acceptable but Al Davis branded him a star before he was one. He really thought he could do no wrong. Not to mention a mediocre coaching staff and game plan to go along with it. Honestly, I would have sat down with Russell and knew after a few minutes of talking with him he was not the guy for our organization. The Raiders do not bring along young QBs. Our track record proves that. He was out there fucking up, but he is all of 24. It is up to him now. He has been a lazy rich spoiled brat up to this point. Only he can turn it around now. We had no choice but to cut him given the situation. I don't disagree with the move. I just think Oakland is not the place for a young QB trying to find his way in the league. Look at the disfunction we have experienced the last 5 or so years. But I can honestly say, that is changing this year. This is the most rationale draft and offseason we have had in years. McClain is the real deal, I garnette that. We would have been 8-8 last year with average QB play. We will be 10-6 this year and playoff bound! RRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIDDDDDDDDDDEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRSSSSSS!

I feel you... it definitely was not the best environment for a young QB to come up... but I'm just saying at the end of the day the majority of the blame needs to fall on Russell... he was given an opportunity that tons of people would have loved to been in... and he showed he could not handle

and I agree... this year is looking like our year, I was talking to a guy at my gym who's a Raiders fan the other day, and we were both talking about how there's a chance we could have been in the wildcard hunt last year if we just had Gradkowski over Russell... this year... we got a great shot

I don't know why we even bother drafting qb's at all, it has never worked out well for us. we've always had success signing/trading for veteran qb's, we need to just keep doing that.

ultimately i still think Russell knows he either doesn't have it or he doesn't care about football enough to use the skills he has effectively....which is why he wanted to get as much money as he could to begin with....some dudes just dont care about the game....but for his sake he needs to stop eating everything he sees and man up and come out and say that its his fault....that's really tha only way i see any other team even bringin him in as a #3 guy.....dudes gotta grow up fast cuz tha NFL will forget about you quiccly

either way Fucc him.....ahaha

Fuck jawalrus. Fat ass piece of shit!!!

I'm real excited to see what JC can do. We just need him to manage the game
n make accurate throws. He doesn't need to be a Peyton type. Hopefully our run game gets goin again n with mcclain, aso, n etc can step up the D as well. With that being said, if we play to our potential, we got a great chance of finally finishing over .500 n quiet possibly a playoff chance.

everyone in tha AFC West has a playoff chance except tha Chiefs....basically 9 or 10 wins gets the division....looking at the schedule if we go into our buy over .500 we should be able to get close.....but the second half of the schedule is pretty rough with Pitt Mia and Indy, plus 3 division games....

Raiders signed OL Daniel Loper, formerly of the Lions.
Loper, 28, has five starts in five career seasons. The fit in Oakland is somewhat odd because Loper has never played in a zone-blocking scheme like the Raiders'. He'll compete for a roster spot as a swing guard/tackle.

Coach Tom Cable indicated that fourth-rounder Bruce Campbell has been switched to guard so he can get playing time as a rookie.
Right guard Cooper Carlisle's play has fallen off the past two years and left guard Robert Gallery is coming off back surgery, so Campbell could be valuable insurance. While he's insanely athletic, he's still far too raw to handle edge rushers as a rookie. It's a smart move by Cable.

Raiders should resist urge to trade for Merriman
By Steve Corkran
Friday, May 14th, 2010 at 10:48 am in Oakland Raiders.

The thought of San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman wearing a Raiders uniform would have seemed preposterous as recently as two years ago.

At the time, Merriman was fresh from a season in which he recorded 12 ½ sacks and in the prime of a career that seemed destined to culminate with his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. There was no way the Chargers would part with the league’s premier defensive player.

Now, 11 days shy of Merriman’s 26th birthday, the Chargers are trying to dump Merriman, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The paper reported that the Chargers had three failed attempts at unloading Merriman last month.

The snag reportedly resulted from the Chargers insisting upon a first-round draft pick in exchange for the five-year veteran. The New Orleans Saints reportedly were one of the teams interested in acquiring Merriman.

Merriman still hasn’t signed the first- and third-round tender of $3.27 million that the Chargers offered him as a restricted free agent. The Union-Tribune said the Chargers still are working on moving Merriman.

This is where the Raiders come in. They haven’t had a game-changing player on defense since the days of free safety Rod Woodson, with apologies to cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.

When Merriman was at his best, teams devised game plans that included ways to steer clear of Merriman and provided for maximum protection against his frequent incursions into the backfield. No more. Merriman is just another guy in the Chargers defense.

In years past, Raiders managing general partner Al Davis would find it hard to resist the urge to trade for a high-profile player such as Merriman, regardless if it was obvious to most that the player’s best days were behind him.

However, Davis has resisted such urges the past two years, with the notable exception of trading for defensive lineman Richard Seymour just before the 2009 season started. At least Seymour still bears a resemblance to the dominant player he was for eight seasons with the New England Patriots.

As for Merriman, he recorded only four sacks last season, including none in his team’s final seven games. This from a player who averaged more than 13 his first three seasons.

Merriman said in an interview on NFL Network that he wants to remain with the Chargers. He also said that his drop in production last season owed more to injuries than anything else.

“Yeah, I had a rough year,” Merriman said. “Yeah, I had a groin and a foot injury that really slowed me down a whole lot. I came back from something that was tough for many guys to do, and right now, I’m more concentrated on getting back on the field 100 percent and performing like I do.

“There’s nothing more important to me than going out there and providing the things that I’ve been doing for my team for five years now. That’s the most important thing going on in my life and how I can get back and play great football.”

The Raiders still have a need for players who can change the complexion of games. Merriman once was that kind of player. Davis would be wise to let the phone go to voicemail if Chargers general manager A.J. Smith calls.

There are 13 linebackers on the Raiders roster. It’s likely that none will ever reach the level of play that Merriman displayed his first three seasons. However, it’s also likely that rookie Rolando McClain and a few others will surpass the play of Merriman next season and beyond.

I agree, we should resist the temptation to trade for "Steroid" Merriman......the guy isnt the player he used to be....and the price is way too high.......It would be nice if we could get him 4 next to nothing like JC and have him sign a incentive laden contract though....nah, fuck lights out, dude has talked alot of shit throughout the years......

UPDATED: OTAs, Kiffin-Cable and `30 for 30′
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, May 17th, 2010 at 8:27 am in Oakland Raiders.

Back at it this week, with Raiders’ OTA’s scheduled Tuesday through Thursday.

If form holds, the media window will be Wednesday (awaiting confirmation), with the Raiders opting for the NFL minimum of availability rather than build on a what has been a very good offseason in terms of positive vibes.

UPDATE: Indeed, media availability will be four of the next five Wednesdays _ May 19 and 26 followed by June 9 and 16.

A couple of items until then:

– Lane Kiffin’s interview with HBO’s “Real Sports” airs Tuesday. Haven’t seen an advance copy, but the Orange County Register reported Kiffin denied he was insubordinate and CNN-SI’s Peter King had a Kiffin quote regarding Al Davis and the coach’s defense about leaving Tennessee after a single season in his “Monday Morning Quarterback” column.

“How many Raiders coaches ended real great? It’s all Al Davis. He’s gonna run the whole thing. What’s going to happen is whatever he feels like that day,” Kiffin said.

Contrast that approach with how Tom Cable described working with Davis following the draft.

“When I first got this job, one of the things I asked him to do was teach me (the business side of it), free agency, putting a team together through the draft,” Cable said. “We’re connecting that way, and it’s a good thing. The field stuff, the coaching, that is easy for me. That’s what I’ve always done. But there’s another whole side of this that’s just as important. That’s where as an organization, we’re able to do it together.”

Cable may not ultimately succeed, and we’ll have a good indication it’s a lost cause the moment Sebastian Janikowski lines up for a 76-yard field goal attempt (not that he’d be insubordinate in any way). If the offense improves, and the Raiders still struggle in terms of wins and losses, Hue Jackson could be next man up.

But Cable is operating in a way that gives him something Kiffin didn’t want _ a chance. You either look to succeed and survive or look to get out. So far, both Cable and Kiffin got what they wanted.

– Is this supposed to be tongue-in-cheek and I’m too clueless to get it?

In Mike Lombardi’s weekly Sunday column he writes “According to sources I’ve talked to in the NFL, former Raiders first-round pick JaMarcus Russell apparently is running out of options. Cincinnati isn’t interested, and several teams are exploring the possibility of Russell playing another position. Russell needs to be more proactive to get back in the NFL, and if that means turning to the CFL, he must explore that option. Waiting for his phone to ring from an NFL team is not going to happen.”

Playing another position?

Putting aside the jokes about Russell playing nose tackle or on the offensive line, what other position could he possibly play and exactly how long are these teams spending on someone whose sole strength at present is a strong throwing arm at a position other than quarterback?

– Lots of angry reaction on Ice Cube’s “Straight Outta LA,” the ESPN “30 for 30” film on the rapper’s youth and the influence of the Los Angeles Raiders.

Growing up in the East Bay during the Raiders’ Oakland glory years, my own point of view was expressed much better in HBO’s “Rebels of Oakland,” the documentary about the championship seasons of the A’s and Raiders. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t interesting to see things from a different frame of reference.

Most striking _ the Los Angeles Raiders represented style over substance, attitude over production. The Oakland Raiders were true iconoclasts, quirky individualists who became a team every Sunday.

Davis was right in that he’ll ultimately be judged by history, and make no mistake _ if the Raiders actually turn things around, considering the change in media since they last won anything _ he’ll be a bigger story than he ever was while presiding over three Super Bowl champions and railing against the perceived injustices of the NFL.
